11 low-key reasons diabetes is the worst
Diabetes has its obvious unsavory qualities... needles, pricks, pokes (kind of the same as pricks but it deserves a second shout out), BG tests, CGM alarms ...at night (ugh.).
But just like the third month into a relationship, it’s less about the red flags you’ve talked yourself into ignoring and more about those little subtle behaviors he/she does that really start to grind your gears.
Here are 11 low-key reasons diabetes is the worst:
No cute little bags for us diabetic girls! Nope! We’re straight mom-pursing it. Diabetic dudes - now they basically need a purse.
Test strips. everywhere.
Having a low episode and people blaming you for not taking care of yourself. I.can’t.control.my.crazy.broken.body. My blood sugar will literally drop if you look at it the wrong way. Working out? Nose dive! Getting sick? Nose dive! Time of the month? Nose dive!
Same with high blood sugars. I am not perfect, I will occasionally fu*k up my carb counting. But if the diabetic gods could create the perfect victim type one diabetic, that person would have my background. I am an engineer, and once-upon-a-time a ~*certified*~ personal trainer.... so I know my way around carbs and am supremely familiar with counting them. And not to boast, but the calculation of carbs to insulin doesn’t hold even a Bath & Body Works mini-sized candle to my Calculus 4 class. Caffeine? Sky rocket. Medication? Sky rocket. It’s Tuesday afternoon? Sky rocket.
That real quick weight gain after losing crazy pounds when your body was eating itself to stay alive before you were diagnosed... that’s a self esteem roller coaster.
Did I mention test strips? In bed, on my floor, falling out of my car when I open the door, in my purse, on my friends floor (sorry guys), on my dog (not a type-o), in my keyboard (okay maybe that’s not so much a diabetes thing as much as it is a Genna thing) ... I actually think this could become a very popular Instagram page.
CGM sensor adhesives. Enough said here.
Like 65% of my mental bandwidth is spent trying to remember shit... like if I packed everything I need on a daily basis (it’s a lot), if I should call the pharmacy based on the amount of supplies I have at the time and how long it will be until I can get to the pharmacy (they only hold insulin for three days), if I need to go to the pharmacy to pick stuff up (also happens a lot) or if I have a doctors appt (also, a lot of those).
How much self control it takes to not go full Conor McGregor on people who are giving unsolicited, incorrect advice about your health.
How gross gluose tabs/gummies/drinks are... I’d rather just go low.
The self control it takes to not eat your emergency snickers bar (necessary though because see reason #10).
I want to hear from my fellow chronically ill/diabetics, what are your low-key reasons? Message me, comment me, make your own list and tag me!
