L’itinéraire absurde, entre les murs, d’un sommeil agité.
Am I the only one who was disappointed with the Sony Playstation 4 presentation? It doesn't really feel like anything was accomplished other than confirming its existence. Most of the presentation was showing off what it can do. That's all fine and dandy (and some demos were really quite impressive) but why should I care about these tech demos if I don't get to see what games we'll be using them in real time?
Now, I understand this is MONTHS before the system will be released and I'm sure Sony's got other projects cooking that they'd like to keep quiet for now, but it was still painfully underwhelming. Let's breakdown the footage that we saw
Before we dive into what is strictly opinion here, I own all systems and appreciate each console for its positives and understand they each have their drawbacks. No matter how much you think a system is better than another, they've always got something that could use a bit of polishing whether it be their game line-up, online functionality, or even just menu set up. Now that that's out of the way, let's take a gander at what we saw, shall we?
Gnack was the first "game" presented which has a fun and cute art style just bursting with color. From the very brief amount of gameplay we saw, it looks to be a platformer/brawler which is refreshing since platforming games haven't seen much light this generation. Other than goblins seeming to be awfully frumpy with humans and a scientist making a creature that is the embodiment of Geometry Wars to slap said goblins around, we know nothing. I'd like to get more details before making a final judgment on this game. Here's the trailer.
Next, Killzone: Shadowfall takes the stage with, what should be common sense, a LIVE DEMO. As expected, Killzone looks stunning in real time. Windows of massive skyscrapers give off a realistic reflection and shine while fabrics move fluently and flap wildly in powerful winds. Not going to lie, when I saw the explosions for the first time, I had a small nerdgasm for the smoke effect. It was simply stunning to watch a huge puff of smoke and debris rise from a fiery blast and then have it dissipate naturally into the wind. Past Killzone's have felt a tad clunky at times but are still quite fun and always graphically impressive. Let's see how this one plays out.
Drive Club then takes the stage and, at first, looks like any other racer. That was until they presented a simple but interesting idea. Team based racing. I'm sure there's a racer out there that's done it before but it certainly seems to be the first to really focus on being a team on the race track. It's a fun to think that you and your buddies can make your own little racing squad and work together to come out on top against the other team. I'm not a racer, but I think this game could bring some new things to the genre. Drive Club presentation here.
Sucker Punch announced Infamous: Second Son. I say 'announced' because that's all we've really got. We had a cinematic with a fellow that looks and sounds like Troy Baker (Very talented voice actor who will actually be the leads for upcoming titles The Last of Us and Bioshock Infinite) who seems to have some sort of fire/smoke ability and is quite displeased with a government that's a tad controlling. Other than that, we've got nothing. Rumors have sparked that this may be the first one to contain multiplayer since they mentioned 'what if people started developing powers?'. Multiplayer isn't always a necessary component in games, but the idea of teaming up with your friends and taking out bad guys with superpowers does sound pretty entertaining. We'll have to wait and see if E3 provides any more details on this one. Video here.
David Cage of Quantic Dreams comes on and doesn't make any announcements for upcoming games or anything of that sort, but he did provide a stunning demo. It's something you really can't express in words, it's something you need to see. Click here to see the actual demonstration. While I'm not a fan of tech demos, this was one that caught my attention at just how detailed and powerful PS4 could be.
Media Molecule than came to the stage and presented what at first was really impressive in my opinion. Using the move controller, it allowed people to do some detailed clay sculpting and allowed absolute artistic freedom. And~ then they presented the little derp rock band at the end and I just... why? Here's the video. There's no doubt that it's still an incredible tool for players to mess around with and allow the imagination to go wild but why the terrible band thing at the end?
Moving on, Capcom comes on and presents a trailer to a game that looks like it might as well be Dragon's Dogma or Dark Souls. I'd like to say I'm interested, but we don't know what it is. Is it an FPS RPG? I've heard some people suggest it might be like a more mature version of Deadmund's Quest. Who knows, only time will tell what Deeper Down and it's working title are? Skip to about 4:20 in the video to actually see the trailer using the Panta Rhei engine.
Well, maybe the next group can bring something new- oh wait, it's Square Enix. I remember when I use to be excited to see anyone from Square Enix take the stage, now, it's just sort of depressing. They presented a tech demo we saw LAST YEAR. Wow, good job folks. On top of that, all they say is, "Expect an announcement at E3!" So~ it's an announcement for an announcement? Nice... At this point, if they don't present either Kindom Hearts 3, Final Fantasy XIII Versus or something fresh, they're really going to sink in this next generation.
Moving on to something that actually brought its A-game was Ubisoft's fascinating Watch Dogs. Although it looks to be the same graphically as it was last when first presented, it still looks great. They presented actual gameplay along with some new open world elements. Though it was brief, it was still refreshing to see. Thank you Ubisoft for actually making a presentation worth our time. Here's the presentation, skip to 3:35 for the demo.
Now this, this was something surprising. Blizzard teaming up with Sony to present Diablo III (and potentially future games) on the Playstation 3 and 4 is definitely impressive. Although I'm personally not a big fan of Blizzard games, I do respect their company along with their production skills and applaud Sony for this union and keeping it secret. I'm actually quite curious to see how Microsoft retaliates to this. Here's the announcement.
Then to end the show, Activision came out and talked about something other than Call of Duty. They discussed (with little detail) Destiny. Now this is a game we know an insignificant amount on but seems to have captured the interest of many. I applaud Sony once again for also nabbing some exclusive content for Destiny which may (or may not) become a huge phenomenon. Here's the video.
Notice how I said "To end the show" up there? Yeah, that was it. No release date, no price, the system itself didn't show up! The only things we've seen are the controller and the eye toy. So~ the big unveiling of the Playstation 4 is a... no show? Really? It's slated to come out this holiday season and we don't even know how much it's going to cost. Hopefully, when Microsoft unveils their system, they provide us with, what I thought would be obvious information to present to your audience.
Oh well, no grand unveiling is perfect. Microsoft made the first move last generation, but Sony's taking the first swing this time. Will that impact sales for either console? Hard to say, but it does put the ball in Sony's court for now seeing as they've actually confirmed a system, more than Microsoft has done so far. Who knows, maybe Microsoft has a big presentation planned before E3?
