If you are in the InuSess fandom in any capacity, you may have heard of this legendary fic. First posted in the late 2000s, this is easily hands down my favorite piece of fanfiction in the InuYasha fandom, and in my top ten list of fanfics in general. It deserves the high place, seriously. This fic a character study of our two favorite half-brothers, exploring their heated dynamic through 20+ chapters that ends in a romantic, satisfying conclusion.
I have no words, truly. This is how you write a slow burn, guys. I was primarily introduced to this author through her frostiron works (which are also pretty great, by the way), but this fic caught my attention. Honestly, I just had a blurry, shallow background on what InuYasha was. Started reading this fic with little knowledge of InuYasha’s plot (I know lol) and got sucked in despite that.
Sesshomaru was cold, haughty, and nonchalant in all the right ways, and watching him grow from mistrustful to fond of his cheeky half-brother was extremely satisfying. InuYasha — being the brash hot headed recluse that he is -- was pretty entertaining to read as well! His thoughts made me snort my coffee out multiple times. This hanyou’s brain is really something, seriously. Hella captures both of their characterizations to a masterful tee, including those of the side characters — Rin and Jaken — as well. Not surprising, since she went on to exhibit this knack for amazing characterization in both ‘Off the Record’ and ‘Winterheart’ as well.
Recently, I printed my own copies of P O I S O N to display on my bookshelf; had a blast binding it. So Hella, if you are lurking around and come across this by chance, I gotta say that this fic was instrumental to my work as a writer in so many ways. The prose is elegant and minimal with the right kind of words that doesn’t scream verbose. How the heck did you manage that? Downright sobbed in some places.
Don’t miss it guys. Read asap. Hella really slapped hard on this.
