You know? Sometimes it makes me angry how people underestimate characters who chose to be good. People who care and try their best everytime. It enrage me cause some people instantly call them "softies", "boring" and "fragile", when this characters must make a big amount of effort to be good. They must control their feelings, take care themselves and others, worry, try their best, every single time, every single day, and it takes lots of energy and will to do so.
No, it's not they are "weak" to kill or hurt someone, they actually are strong. They could totally beat you to dead, hurt you and don't care, but they choose not to.
They could feel the most burning fire of rage and revenge inside of themselves but they decide not to let themselves be consumed by it.
It doesn't mean evil or neutral characters aren't strong, or that would make them less, it means all of this characters deserve respect for what they choose and not to do.
Some thoughts on Harry from CW show Charmed (reboot)
So, Iām a huge fan of the original late 90s to early 2000s Charmed and have been largely giving the reboot a lot of chuckles and eye-rolls for some of the choices that itās made, but I have to give it props on some things, one of them being Harry.Ā
Heās not my favorite character of the reboot, nor do I think that his plot threads for the season are the most compelling *cough* charity *cough* but I do think that heās nailed one thing over the course of the season thus far. (Accentuated in the latest episodeĀ āKeep Calm and Harry Onā)
Harry is good.
Now I mean, a little more than Iām saying on the surface here, in that heās the first character in a good while that has made me think about what that really means whether itās intentional or not. I get that heās this universeās equivalent of an angel, so heās supposed to be good, but he takes this a step farther without being flawless, in fact a lot of the time heās the butt of all jokes on the show.Ā
Harry has essentially taken the role of the bumbling British squatter whoās living in the Veraās garage (even though he claimed he was leaving because they didnāt need his undivided protection anymore.)Ā
Despite the living arrangements situation, Harryās been taken advantage of by the girls for most of the series thus far, having to deal with their complications and messes. I understand that itās his job to do so, but Harry has never really gotten frustrated with them, and is always happy to help them with problems not related to his charges status.Ā
Harryās forged a genuine connection with the girls, despite some setbacks like their initial distrust and verbal attacks against him, and more serious circumstances like leaving him to get mauled by a demon while the girls sought out a way to kill him because they didnāt trust him.Ā
Heās been as supportive as he could be to the trials and tribulations that Mel, Maggie and Macy have faced in the series so far and has earned their trust.Ā
In the latest episode *SPOILERS*
He was tortured in the darkest pit of hell for a week by some sort of underworld dragon, being forced to relive the worst parts of his human life and coming to the realization that perhaps he wasnāt the virtuous person he was led to believe when his memories were stripped and he was reanimated, all while being continuously poisoned by demonic scorpion venom. This is all while being in an actually hopeless situation. The lore of the series has made it clear that the only way out of Tartarus is through the recently-destroyed Scythe of Tartarus.Ā
Regardless of this circumstance, and the fact that heās not valuable enough to the cosmic order to be saved, the first thing he does upon hearing Maggieās torture and imprisonment is to demand to take her torture upon himself. He gets what he asked for.Ā
He never saw Maggie, and had no proof that she was really there and wasnāt just illusory. He was more than likely not going to be rescued, and would suffer for eternity. He probably wasnāt even the good person that he believed himself to be, yet the first thing he did when given an option was to take a selfless act at great expense to himself, that would more than likely make no difference in the long term.Ā
Harry is good. Not flawless, but fundamentally good. With all of the dingy moral relativism awash in popular culture and the bleak outlook that I see for humanity, that means something.Ā
(Macyās my favorite of the characters, btw)
Item: Golden Brooch of the Honor Orchestra. Wearing this brooch grants a good-aligned bard an ethereal backup orchestra that allows them to cast their bardic spells as if one level higher than they actually are. However, if the bard commits any dishonorable act, the Brooch loses all power and turns to lead, and at the next encounter/conflict for 4d12 rounds the orchestra grants Bardic Inspiration to the bardās antagonists.
Encounter: the Living Swordfight, a powerful good-aligned aberration made of two unicorns that don't care for each other
This...
Encounter: the Uno (For Men & Women), chaotic-good Aberration used for warding by deities of that alignment; can leave a big brightly-colored kiss-print on any solid surface with the same effects as a Prismatic Wall of the same color, which is to say that upon a creature touching them:
Red: 10d6 Fire
Orange: 10d6 Acid
Yellow: 10d6 Lightning
Green: 10d6 Poison
Blue: 10d6 Cold
Indigo: Restrained/Petrified
Violet: Blinded
Encounter: the Society for the Protection of Giant Animals, a non-profit organization run by some of the more intelligent giants to improve quality of life for misunderstood oversized animals. Some of typical SPGA activities (from top left): teaching a Gojira to avoid power lines, doing a physical on a Mothra larva that was injured after escaping to Paris, doing a dental exam on a Gamera, doing a little public outreach with ambassador Gojiras and Ebirahs to show beach-goers the monsters are not dangerous, Ghidorah-proofing a city to cut down on damage as a young dragon learns to deal with its new prostheses, and helping a Gojira make peace with a Smog Monster.
Encounter: an angelic percussion section (snare, bass, tambourine, and washboard) whose holy beats allow the Good-aligned to act in unison, delivering coordinated attacks
