the two of you are on a date out near the coast, dining outside of some small boutique café that he’s been hearing nothing but good things about in the month and a half since it opened. and, ever the enterprising and opportunistic octomer, azul wanted to stop by and taste their menu so he could recreate their most popular items for the lounge — and since you also happened to have the day off he decided to kill two birds with one stone (as some particularly morbid landers say) and turn his planned business outing into a date for you both. all paid for by him, naturally, as what kind of man would he be if he didn’t at least cover the cost of your meal and drink?
regardless of whatever you end up ordering, azul asks for a taster menu to work through for each course — and it’s about midway through him working his way through the desserts (notebook in hand the whole time, naturally) that he picks up on a flavour and texture that he knows you like. so, seizing the chance to have a romantic moment with you, he points it out, takes his fork and moves to feed it to you from across the table, the whole while flushed a delicate and faint purple across his cheeks as he tries desperately to act all suave and chivalrous and not like the nervous wreck he actually is
and then, just as you’re leaning down to take a bite, a seagull swoops down and steals the dessert — fork and all, mind you — right out from azul’s hands. even slamming into the table and sending everything else flying across the pavement, and onto the two of you, in the process of its absolutely graceless escape
for a good few seconds he’s just frozen in place, cream and caramel and crumbs slowly falling off of his glasses as he stares blankly into the middle distance like he’s internally screaming, before he eventually comes back from wherever he mentally retreated to and uses magic to quickly clean you both up. acting as nonchalant about the whole experience as he possibly can even though it’s clear as day to you that he’s just… so deeply bothered by it (for sevens sake he can’t even look you in the eyes and his voice is so tight you’re shocked he can talk at all)
needless to say he will be asking for a refund for the awful experience and very sternly advising them about warning their customers about the risks that come from sitting on the patio. and he will be prioritising recreating that particular dessert of theirs at the lounge because he’s nothing if not stubborn and he wants to impress you with his skill and his romantic gestures… and no wayward birds can attack you when you’re safe in the lounge so he has no need to worry about anything ruining this moment (except floyd… but he has enough experience with him to know how to distract him from causing a scene so that’s neither here nor there)

the two of you are back in clocktown for the winter break, sat out in the park and sharing some sandwiches that dylla so thoughtfully made for you both before setting off for work that morning. half of them made with deuce’s preferences in mind (and, consequently, much better looking to the eye due to her experience with cooking eggs) and the other half made to your tastes (though a bit messier as she tried to follow a recipe she found online to… mixed results)
and for as much food as you both packed, you somehow managed to finish your portion and still end up feeling a bit peckish — which deuce, always eager to prove himself as a good boyfriend, took as a personal challenge as he immediately took one of the untouched egg sandwiches from the bag and held it up to your mouth. flushed bright pink from the collarbones upwards and clearly flustered yet wearing such an adorably determined expression as he insisted that you take what was left of his portion and that he wasn’t all that hungry anyway. what a gentleman!
and then a damned seagull just had to swoop in and spoil the moment, stealing the sandwich straight out of his hands and smacking you both in the face with its wings in the process — which he’s honestly more bothered by than the food theft — before flopping about inelegantly on the grass for a few moments and taking off once more to, surely, ruin some other couple’s romantic moment as it had yours
deuce’s immediate response is a mixture of shock and confusion — shock at the brazen theft because the food was literally in his hands and millimetres away from your lips, shock at getting smacked by a bird and how much it actually hurt him, confused as to where it came from because seagulls are very much so not common in clocktown and shouldn’t even be here at this time of year so how in the seven did it get there in the first place — before transitioning into a panicked concern as his brain catches up to the fact that you were also a casualty in the whole event and he scrambles to clean you off and make sure that you’re okay
this is an event that’s going to haunt him for years to come for sure, but as long as word of his failed romantic gesture never get back to his friends at school (namely epel and ace, the worst offenders by far) or his mother deuce will eventually be able to laugh at the memory. even if the embarrassment of getting interrupted by a bird and showering you in crumbs never fully goes away no matter how many years have passed… and yes he will be trying to arrange a redemption date afterwards where you two can actually share a meal without getting divebombed by the world’s most shameless bird

exam season has finally come to a close and to celebrate the occasion, and the first week since the very beginning of the year that there have been no unbirthday parties for him to attend to, riddle had invited you over to have a private tea party in heartslabyul. no strings attached, no traditions to abide by, just the two of you and some excellent food to enjoy together to close this stressful chapter of the school year. it’s nice, peaceful even if heartslabyul can ever truly be described as such, and you find yourself almost hoping the moment would never end
then midway through your little party of two he gets the urge to share the cake he was eating with you, like he’d seen done in media a dozen times over, and started looking for an opening to do so. after all, as the housewarden of heartslabyul he couldn’t risk being seen acting so improper without proper reason and consent. it would have to be off with his head, in fact. but then, blessedly, he finds his excuse in one of the eight hundred or so rules he’s long since committed to memory when some bird somewhere distantly behind him caws thrice in a row in just the right octave (on a bright sunny day while you both are drinking tea, surrounded by white roses, the exact niche conditions required for rule 783 — it took every ounce of willpower he had not to grin like the legendary cheshire cat when he realised!)
… only for his hopes to immediately be dashed when a seagull (of all the birds; how did it even get through the mirror portal?) dove between you and inelegantly swiped the cake straight out of his hands. in the process managing to not only smack you in the chest and throw crumbs in your face, but also to send just about half of the food and finery that was on the table flying all over the place… and down the front of riddle’s perfectly pressed shirt. sevens damn it
riddle is, naturally, shocked to stillness at first because… well… there is absolutely no precedent for a seagull being in heartslabyul’s pocket dimension and no corresponding rule to guide him through the situation at hand. so all that happens for a good minute or so is riddle staring, wide eyed and increasingly red in the face, in the direction the offended flew off in while you can see him actively processing what just happened in real time — stuck between fury and shock and leaving you with quite the amusing view despite the circumstances
and then, once his mind finally catches up with reality and he breaks out of his stunned trance, riddle immediately launches into a furious tirade about what just occurred. offence dripping off of his every word as he cites every rule, dorm official as well as unspoken, that the offending bird just broke — seemingly one voice crack away from calling upon the rose bushes to launch into action and apprehend the feathered offender before you cut him off, force him to sit back down, and (still laughing, both at him and at the situation) offer him some of your mostly intact tart as a peace offering. one which he, although begrudgingly and while still visibly irate and keeping his guard up for anymore interruptions, accepts. and thanks you for, because no matter how much he may lose his temper riddle is still a gentleman… and it’s against the rules not to do so

dates with ruggie are never boring. they may be tragically infrequent due to his perpetually packed schedule, and kept to a tighter budget than most as he doesn’t have the same amount of disposable income as some of his more fortunate classmates, but he always manages to make them fun. interesting, even. and today has been, thus far, absolutely no exception — even if the premise itself (using some vouchers he’s been saving up for a few weeks, and taking advantage of some gimmicky sale at a local dessert shop to load up on the good stuff) is not particularly exciting at first glance… but this is ruggie, after all, and in your months-long relationship you’ve found that he just as a knack for making everything infinitely more fun when he’s around. or maybe you’re just hopelessly in love with him, who knows
so here you find yourselves, leisurely walking down the boardwalk and exchanging banter that is surely nowhere near as funny as it seems to you both in the moment while slowly making your way through the food you’ve bought, when ruggie gets the sudden and deeply un-ruggie-like urge to share his food with you. maybe it’s his beastman instincts coming to the forefront (the desire to feed and tend to you as his mate; to prove himself as a good provider), maybe he wants to smear some cream on your face and make fun of you for it, maybe he just caught your smile in the corner of his eye and felt like being a bit romantic. but no matter the reason, because sevens know he won’t admit to it either way, he suddenly stops you and tells you to open wide so he can feed you a bite of his dessert (just a bite, he still doesn’t play about his food after all)
then some… seagull has the gall to swoop down and steal the whole serving of food straight out of his hands. it even managed to bite his hand a bit on the way through, just to add injury to insult
and, naturally, ruggie is distraught. he plays it up a bit to make you laugh — falling to his knees, pretending to weep, improvising a whole ‘woe is me’ speech, the whole nine yards — but underneath the jokes he is genuinely really upset. because, discount or not, that food was a luxury he was really looking forward to and that he wanted to share with you, with his mate, and those kinds of experiences don’t happen often for him. after all, there’s a reason he doesn’t play when it comes to his money or his food, and having this happen just feels like a punch in the gut
but when you offer him your hand to hold, your (also very good) dessert to share, and offer to foot the bill on your next dinner date… well… that certainly lightens the blow. by quite a lot actually. though he will be insisting on you two eating indoors for the forseeable future, just in case
