GORILLAZ THEORY: The Lost Chord

theory/headcanon: The Lost Chord's video is a metaphor for the band finally starting their healing journey for their Plastic Beach trauma. (spoilers duh, but seriously I adore this phase and song as a whole it's incredible please check it out it's linked here)

this is totally not me coping with the fact that Cyborg Noodle "died" during it but I also have slight evidence that she didn't

Evidence (video)

First of all, this is extremely different from all of the videos on Song Machine. I interpret this as sort of being a way to say "this isn't real. This video isn't real. It is not actually happening." I also kind of take it as 2D's dissociation with the events, as seeing it as a "movie" or something.

I interpret this as Murdoc seeing himself as "the boogeyman." HE is the reason this all happened. He took the band's souls. He ruined everything. He hunted them down. (Also, notice the nose? Might also reference how he sort of feels like he can never escape his father's image...though that might be a stretch...I do personally think the Boogeyman was just a drug/alcohol induced hallucination due to the nose...and him never coming back later on, but there's evidence against this, so megh)

idk I just wanted to include this. I have nothing to add I adore their outfits in this, though

Russel has always sort of protected Noodle even before Plastic Beach. I think this moment (besides being a callback to rhinestone eyes) is to say, despite how old she is now, he'd protect her no matter what. (I really don't like this still it makes me really uncomfortable to see...eugh)

Russ being the last to see Plastic Beach (him being the last to "come to" from his dissociation during the whole ordeal) 2D on the ground (vulnerable, how he felt weak during the entire phase but he's still about to stand showing how he was still fighting back somewhat), Noodle with her hands on her knees showing how she felt exhausted throughout it all but still kept fighting, and Murdoc standing in horror of what he's done realizing he's back, sober, and can't ignore the harm he's caused.

this. fucking. Broke me the first time I saw it. Just rewatching it with the realization and horror that Noodle must be feeling in this moment, "Oh my God, she's still here." and THEN THIS.

I take this as him finally noticing it and breaking. "She's still here. We left it here. We never brought it with us." (I take this as "Cyborg Noodle never left the [mindset of] plastic beach. She always stayed there and never came home because it WAS her home."

this. THIS. It's basically confirmation "she's never leaving it's mindset of Plastic Beach." SHE CAN'T BECAUSE SHE'S A ROBOT.

Now, I'm not sure what Leee here is supposed to represent. The band's therapist? The band finally deciding it's time to leave it all behind and just destroy the place? idk

Now, this, I think, is a possible way of saying Russel and Murdoc might possibly be on good terms, or maybe Russel healing from his own personal trauma? Or him accepting the band as his own family?

2D to be the first to finally say "I'm ready to heal"?

2D spiraling while he tries to heal?

Russel takes the leap first, finally ready to leave the trauma behind and let it no longer define him, with Noodle trusting him to go along with him, while Murdoc, desperate for someone to understand, tries to take him with him.

but 2D refuses, he refuses to be defined by the beach and goes with them.

"Wait! Don't leave me here alone!"

"I can change to! I can heal to I swear!"

But no one believes him. He's run out of chances....

"If you guys won't trust him, fine. I will"

"we can heal together."

Some thoughts on 2d's eyes from gorillaz

So yall know that 2d's eyes go from this

I have a lil personal headcannon/theory as to why. Ok so we all know that 2d's eyes were not knocked out, but rather pushed in after murdoc ran him over, twice (i know he didnt run him over, but its funnier to say) But then how come his eyes are white in some of the newer phases? cateracts.

they dont glow (aside from tranz but lets be real, they took Lsd for that one) and when russel tripped him, they turned black again (8 ball fractures can cause the eye to be fragile after the injury) And not to mention, around phase 6-7 (cant remember) murdoc got arrested, and what did murdoc do to 2d? Smack him WAYYY too much, causing his eyes to refill with blood, keeping his eyes that black color. Murdoc doing this, Hitting 2d with blunt force and stuff, usually in the back of the head or the front, is definitely a big contributor to the Cateracts theory/headcannon, because injury to the eyes (Like being hit by a car, flung onto a curb, abuse, etc) can cause cateracts. So around Phase 6-7, 2d's eyes had time to heal without the presence of murdoc and his abuse of him, leading to the blood to go away, but his vision still being blurry due to trauma related cateracts.

so. song machine was. a big step in murdocs redemption arc. specifically in the music videos for desole and the lost chord.

i interpret the desole music video as everybody else being to move on and heal, while murdoc cannot. murdoc watches as 2d leaves in the beginning, and he could go if he wanted to, but he cant. he doesnt feel as if he *can* go anywhere nice with them, because he knows he doesn’t deserve it. ‘everybody else is moving on’ (murdoc helps write the songs, if i recall) is proof of this. but even while everyone seems happy because hes not there, they know theres a piece missing, hence noodles green gloves. part of me thinks that maybe murdoc specifically chose french because he didn’t want people to know the english lyrics. even the trunk is symbolism. murdoc is finally trying to come out of his shell (or. trunk so to speak), only to go back to it at the end of the video.

and the lost chord. they are taken back to the most traumatizing part of their career, plastic beach. as SOON as he realizes where they are, he closes his eyes, he doesnt want to believe they’re actually there. even the trauma is shown through what they see immediately as theyre transported there. murdoc is wearing the boogieman mask, 2d threw up a whale (similar to the one that was constantly watching him), russel was gigantic, granted only for a few seconds, and noodle sees her old mask. the island being destroyed could symbolize them finally moving on (and the fact they could leave), but murdoc being trapped represents the fact that he *cant*. hes trapped by the guilt. but then 2D saves him, almost like a reassurance. “I forgive you.” and its only then that murdoc can finally move on.

^ and decided that this guy is actually a fusion of Murdoc, Russel, and 2-D

it came about because of this email and price of art Thunder found

so we KNOW Murdoc at the very least planned to clone all of them, so maybe just maybe, he did, and the Monster from the rejects is the amalgamation of all of them

he sort of has Russels arms and 2-D's legs.. what do you think?

I just need to point out that Noodle didn’t get her face overlayed with the Pazuzu logo at any point in that video. Just the two guys with white eyes. aka. The one confirmed to be subjected to possession and the one we’ve been theorizing for years is also subjected to possession... just saying.
