What was the ring that Daenerys dropped in the season finale?

Answers will be gladly appreciated. So in 5x01, Varys revealed to Tyrion that he's planning to meet him up with Daenerys at Meereen and Varys' dialogue "who said anything about him" was teasing of his allegiance (?) to Dany. But in the books, Varys and Illyrio Mopatis are plotting to install fAegon in the Iron Throne. He even contracted Jorah Mormont to send spy reports about Dany until Jorah stopped. So is show-Varys supporting Dany for the Iron Throne one of the biggest deviations from the books? Or is there a lot to be discovered to know Varys' real motivation in campaigning for Dany/fAegon both in the show and the books, and in that case, will it be different or the same?
