The laughter of the insane reflects the terrifying reality we are all too 'well-adjusted' to acknowledge; the world has gone mad around us.
[[ I'm so sorry guys i'm so tired, i've gotta crash for a bit.]]

Daken lounged in the shadows of an alleyway, and let the caped crusader pass him by over head. He hadn't done anything that night to be worried about, and in fact Batman didn't really worry the man in thesuit even when that couldn't be claimed. But he followed his nose as soon as the coast was clear, following the scent of greasepaint and insane clarity. Also, smoke. Okay, mainly the smoke. The Joker always put on the best of shows...

The city was dirty, and smelled of an unappitizing mix of sweat, fear, and garbage down over. There wasn't a breath of fresh air to be had inside the boundaries of Gotham City and for all that, Detective Maria Hill loved the city. People shouted, shoved, elbowed one another on the subway and sidewalks, and every now and again they murdered one another. But she still loved the city. She loved the noise that never stopped, the way that maybe only half the streetlights worked in the worst sections of the city, and even the inventive invectives hurled by the Everyman on the streetcorner by the Deli down the street from the Hall of Justice. She was a good cop, unbribeable, shiny yet for all her years on the beat from a fresh-faced 18-year-old rookie to a detective at 32. She would, perhaps, even admit to being a decent human being if you got her drunk and suggested the fact to her. But she rarely drank anyway, and had been born here, in the slums. She'd wanted to bring order to the chaos, and ended up settling for shining a flashlight into the abyss and embracing the chaos she found like an old friend, trimming the oily branches where they no longer fit the shape of how she knew her city should be shaped. She kept a bonsai tree on her desk in the police station, and contemplated cases by staring at it. It helped her see the shape behnd the chaos, and where it broke the pattern. No one mocked her for it after they saw her closed-cases record. There was a new player on the streets, this Batman. He didn't fit. But where one masked idiot ruins the pattern, so too will others. This Joker, for instance; Maria got adefinite feeling from his crimes that herewasone who not only embraced the chaos, but spawned it as a thunderstorm spawns lightning. He didn't fit either; it was like giving Miracle-Gro to a miniature tree and trying to keep it in check with a toothpick and wishes. So when a call came in that the Joker had left another body in the warehouse district, she tookthe call, her partner of the month tagging along gleefully and entirely too bright-eyed for Detective Hill's tastes. There was a reason her partners kept being transferred to other houses; she worked better alone. This one was all gung-ho and would get them both killed if a lesson couldn't be had quickly about the realities of life on the streets of Gotham. The problem was getting them a lesson that didn't kill them in the process... They pulled up in an unmarked car, and entered carefully, the uniform on the door shrugging and saying they'd figure out what was up soon enough. It was an odd way to phrase it, and stuck in Maria's mind as off somehow. But it never quite clicked until they realized there was no body to be found. "Oh, hell."
—— “Mmm, may I help you with something?"

"... Who are you, and what do you want." Her eyes narrowed, and she took a step back slowly.
