The stern of the 'Gouda' (1665), by Willem van de Velde the Elder, 1672

A very detailed study of the stern and starboard quarter gallery of the ‘Gouda’, 72 guns, built 1665, last mentioned 1677. On the tafferel are the arms of Gouda, with a snake added on the pale, on a crowned shield supported by two lions.

A female figure is above with her arm resting on a sword, seated amidst arms and trophies. Two large lions are on the quarters. A long upper slingerlijst. Two shields are on the counter, on the port side are crossed anchors and on the starboard side a lion rampant for the Admiralty of Amsterdam.

I had made another trip to Orchard Road, so I am back queuing at Johan Bakery. Yes, I am patiently waiting in line for the clock to strike 3pm when trays of the freshly baked Fluffy Cheese 🧀 (S$12.40 each) loaves 🥖 will be out of the oven. You can buy it whole or in half but it’s just too good to buy anything less than one whole loaf.
