how to make a basic gradient
adding colors with brushes
softening & adjustments
What you´ll need:
any version of photoshop (I use CS6, mine is in german because I bought it years ago in germany)
very basic photoshop knowledge
i. how to make a basic gradient
Open a new document in your desired size.
There are several ways to make gradients. I always use the new fill layer option, right next to the new layer or new group buttons on the right side.
Click on it and select the second option.
Adjust the angle however you wish, and then click on the gradient to bring up the next window
Select any colors you want by clicking on the little droppers highlighted above. I used #ff27f2 on the left and #d58dfa on the right. Once you´re done click OK until your new gradient is on your document.
ii. add colors with brushes
add a new layer & select a big brush with no hardness and low opacity.
select any color to paint with, I´ll be using #e50051 & #770dfa & plain white. Start painting on that new layer in slow strokes. You can add as many colors as you want. Mine now looks like this:
Now we merge our layers by selecting them, then righ click and selecting merge
iii. softening & adjustments
Go to filters -> blur > motion blur
Depending on the gradient you´ll have to select different variables, but for this one I used the numbers below:
Sometimes I add Gaussian Blur too to blend it even more, but didn´t do that for this gradient.
Now for the adjustments I only added a brightness and vibrance layer. This is the finished gradient:
I hope you don’t mind me asking but how do you do the gradient colors for your titles they’re so pretty
HELLOOOO!!! No, I don't mind! Here's how I usually format my gradient titles :)
#1 - Go to the settings icon on the post and click on that. Scroll down and look for "Text Editor".
#2 - It should say "Rich Text". Click that and choose "HTML" from the choices.
#3 - Then go to this site and on a field that says "Your text here!", place your title and then set the colors you want for your text using the two things beside the field where you put your title.
#4 - Click "generate" and if you scroll down, you'll see the HTML code for your text. Click that and copy.
#5 - Go to the HTML part of your post and paste the code. Switch back to the preview part and you're free to adjust the gradient text (regular, chat, Lucille) and you're done!
Can you please tell me how you you do the captions on gif sets where the text is like rainbow ombré colors??? I have no idea how, thank you!!!!!
Here's how to get the gradient text in tumblr captions!
Type out your caption on a tumblr post like you usually would, copy your text then go to this site. In the bottom right corner, paste your caption in the top bar and choose the gradient colours next to it.
You can type directly into the bar but i prefer typing my caption somewhere else because it's easier to spot typos, especially if it's a long caption.
Press "Run" to generate the gradient and a bunch of code will appear in the bottom bar. Select all of it and copy it.
Go back to your tumblr post and click on the post's settings (the little gear icon on the top right of the post). Change the Text editor format from Rich text to HTML.
Now replace the caption that you typed earlier with the gradient code you just copied from the site. Once you've pasted it into the tumblr post's caption area it should look like this:
Click on the preview to see if the gradient looks good :)
That's pretty much it, you can post immediately or further tweak the text by manually adding bold/italics or changing the text size! To change specific words into bold or italics, you'll need to add the following codes to the start and the end of the words you want to change.
TIP: the gradient code you saw earlier actually separates all the characters in the sentence so each letter is a different colour. so I don't recommend changing specific words since it's really tedious to look for the start and end letters of the exact word you want to change.
I am sorry to bother you. Can you possibly help me? I am trying to create gradients, but I do not know how get the other colors needed for a nice gradient. For example say the color I want to use is 7cb33e. How would I turn that into a gradient. Sorry for such silly questions!
Howdy! This is @omicient the creator of A Moot Point. Thank you for your question! The ask box is here for Recoloring requests and to join the AMP-lified Recoloring Team \( ゚ヮ゚)/ this does seem more like a general HOW TO ask though, but because I was going to release some type of tutorial I am inclined to answer anyways! I am not a pro in any shape or form! It is also for PHOTOSHOP, because it's the only way I know how to make gradients in right now! (ps the tutorial isn't extremely fancy but I did my best to make it coherent) Anyways enough of me blabbering!!
GRADIENTS TUTORIAL
Hope this helps you and anyone else looking to make gradients down the line! I look forward to see some more! -Omicient
I got requested on how I made my gradient of the waterbending scroll from my atla edit so here is a quick tutorial on how I did it!
Please note: this is just how I do it myself, there may be many ways on how someone else does it but this is my own personal way. This is a gradient tutorial more aimed towards animation gifs. Please know basic Photoshop gif techniques. I am using Photoshop CS5 with timeline.
First things first, make your gif. I will be using this scene from Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure: Golden Wind of Sex Pistol Number One, Mista’s stand.
I would recommend picking scenes that don’t have too many colors or background with a lot going on. However, I decided on a scene with movement and clouds in the back to show if you can’t find a good one but want a gradient in your set.
After I already colored and sharpen my gif, I like to add selective color to enhance the colors already in the gif. I think this makes it easier for the gradient process.
The setting HIGHLY depend on the colors in your gif. Play around with the colors and see what works with the colors. Tip: per selective color, play around with ONE color. Don’t do multi colors in one, this could mess up the coloring and using a different one makes it easier. I also added a hue/saturation so I could make the clouds match the blue sky. This goes along with my selective color. You don’t have to add this if you don’t want to, but it can help if you’re having trouble with selective.
My gif has different colors and I want to try to even out the yellows of Number One and the blue sky, along with the surrounding colors of Number One and the bullet he kicks. Here are my settings:
Now the gif looks like this:
Everything is close to being two colors, which is what we want so it’s easier. Now we can add the gradient map.
I want my gradient to be yellow and white; my background yellow and the white highlighting Number One and the bullet. Again, mess with the colors to see what fits your needs. Sometimes playing around helps us learn PS better. Here is my settings:
Now the gif looks like this:
Now you can stop here if you’d like. For me, I want to get rid of the bits of cloud that got caught up with the white. I added another layer and painted over it with my background color, which is now yellow.
And ta-da!
Here is my finished gif! This is very easy to do and manageable to what gradient colors you want. Here are a few more examples when using this tutorial:
This a good way to get creative with your gifs! Like I said, there is many ways you can do this gradient technique. Find which way you find it easier and keep trying out new things. ♥
How did you do that gradient effect on your veronica x logan gifset where they're kissing? Can u pls make a tutorial or something? Thank you so much!!!!!
Okay, so I don’t know how much you make gifs. You might make them all of the time, you might make them almost never. If you make them all almost never, I’ve literally put this click by click lolol it’s too much honestly. There are probably different and better ways to do this, but I do the most basic things in ps – very lazy. Okay, anyway:
After I load my whole gif frames up and crop it to the size I want, The first thing I do is open a new transparent layer to the same size.
You don’t actually have to open a whole new layer, you can just do it on a transparent layer on the gif itself. But, I like have the transparent background sometimes.
Then I open up the brush tool and pick any one of the top soft brushes. In this case, I went with the third from the top row.
I set it to a fairly decent size. 360 or so.
There are four colors in the gradient. This fushia color is the first. These are the general settings, but it really doesn’t have to be the exact numbers or anything, because you can make your gradient any colors you want.
But, if you’re trying to get the exaaaaaaaaaaact same look from that Veronica Mars set, I’m showing you all of my numbers, throughout the whole gif.
I brush some fushia up in the top left-hand corner.
The majority of the brush needs to be on the grey of the board and off of your transparent layer – to get the softest of the brush.
Most of the colors will be placed the same way – with the majority of the brush being off of they layer.
A soft enough red, next.
Just under the fushia, on the scope of the left side.
They should slightly overlap, as you can see at the top.
A bright teal.
Along the bottom left-hand corner and painted into the middle, just like the fushia.
This brush was a bit heavier than the first two – the center of the brush more prominent on the layer.
A deeper brighter blue.
On the top right-hand and bottom right-hand corners.
The blues are all the heavier colors, so the same as the teal – the brush slightly further in.
Then I made my brush a bit smaller and took the same teal from before.
And put in on the right side – in the center, but mostly bottom over some of the darker blue.
And then softened it, by putting some of the darker back over it.
That’s the gradient. But, to make it shine and bright the way it was in the gif, instead of these sort of drab colors, comes with the coloring. Here are the general steps and general numbers/placements I had in the original set:
curve
vibrance to 100
contrast around 40
brightness around 10
(I have a color balance that goes here that I forgot to take a cap of, which is “shadows” up green, like, 10….and red up….like 5?)
another curve, ‘cause yeah bright.
Then I drag the transparent layer we just did and put it underneath the coloring. which brings you to:
Which is insane. I mean, it’ll work for some sets, but not the one we’re doing.
turn the opacity of the layer down to 20%.
Which softens it up. But, then we’re gonna open our eraser.
and take one of the soft brushes, I chose the third, around the same-ish size from before – apparently I went up to 370, that’s fine.
and click once in the middle of the set, around the faces, to remove the bulk of the color there and soften the edges around them.
And then it’s all done. That’s how I did the coloring on my Veronica Mars set.
