Spring Cleaning (Entry 3)

No matter how tedious it is to hunt for an apartment in a new city, the frustration will never overwhelm the exhilaration. Every address, every room is a possibility, and even cramped, poorly maintained flats represent possible future lives. New York City, demanding and distracting, will also be home.

If a cluttered apartment reflects a cluttered mind, I need the spring cleaning of a lifetime: putting the steel of my possessions through a crucible will give me the strength I’m looking for.

First up is my wardrobe, which, in its current iteration is a sort of journal. Rows of clothing record experimentation and learning: jeans too baggy, jacket cut awkwardly at the hips, shirt that clashes with the red in my face. In two years, I want to replace this prototype with the first version of my adult wardrobe, saving relatively little, and I don’t need thirty shirts to tide me over.

The only domain of my wardrobe left untouched is my shoes, maybe because I empathize with them specifically. After all, if City life means living on a shoestring, and coming home to a shoebox, what exactly am I?
