I really want to know what's going through Graysen's head when he has to look at Lucien.
I imagine the insecurity must be...poignant.
There is a 24 hour period in ACOWAR that three important things happen in terms of Azriel and Elain’s relationship.
-The dissolution of Elain and Azriel’s first love interests.
-The crux of Elain and Azriel’s relationship arcs.
-A balance is created between Elain and Azriel experientially.
Let’s talk about it.
24 hours occurs over the course of chapters 42-55 in ACOWAR. In these chapters we have: the high lord’s meeting, the falling of the wall separating the mortal realm from Prythian, and Elain going to Graysen’s estate to plead sanctuary for humans who need it.
The first night that the IC stays in the Dawn Court after the initial high lord’s meeting- Mor effectively humiliates and rejects Azriel very publicly by not so discreetly sleeping with Helion in the same vicinity as Azriel. This was the final nail in the coffin for any ‘potential’ for Mor/Azriel. (Personally, I don’t think Mor and Azriel were ever the plan). Interestingly though leading up to this final closing of the door, they were already on the decline in the beginning of ACOWAR. I think Sarah was intentionally heavy handed with Mor and Azriel at the start of ACOMAF to starkly show this decline in relation to the increased presence of Elain; in fact, we begin to see this decline after the bat boys meet the sisters.
The following morning the wall falls and the IC rushes back to Velaris to mobilize. This is when Elain suggests that Graysen’s estate is the only safe place where humans will stand a chance against the coming onslaught. And that is where we have Graysen publicly reject and humiliate Elain, the engagement is over, Graysen can not and will not overcome Elain becoming Fae- the door is closed.
Within one day, possible futures between Mor/Azriel and Elain/Graysen are sunk nearly simultaneously.
In the midst of these interactions, we have Rhys and Feyre make two very prophetic observations about Azriel and Elain. “‘But he loves her. How can he sit idly by?’ ‘He thinks she is happier without him.’ His eyes shown with the memory—of his own choice to sit back. ‘He thinks he’s unworthy of her.’ . . . ‘There will come a day when Azriel has to decide if he is going to fight for her or let her go.’” Conversation between Rhys and Feyre Chapter 47
I don’t think it is a coincidence that Rhys says this about Azriel right after the reader finds out about the love ‘triangle’ of Helion/LoA/Beron. We find out that the LoA chose duty (Beron) over her heart (Helion). This is also the same book that introduces and explains the Blood Duel, which was again brought to the reader’s attention in the bonus chapter from Azriel’s POV. And ironically enough, earlier in ACOWAR we have Lucien saying in chapter 12 that he wants to see if Elain is ‘worth fighting for.’ And what do you know, as the books currently stand Elain is also seemingly torn between following her heart (Azriel) and her duty to (and the political security of) the mating bond (Lucien). In fact, just hours after Rhys’s observation about Azriel, Feyre says this about Elain in chapter 55:
“Some sliver of hope that had shattered today. That Graysen would still love her, still marry her—and that love would trump even a mating bond.”
These two statements about Azriel and Elain are what I believe to be at the crux of their relationship arcs. Azriel, who has always felt unworthy, will have to decide to fight for the love he wants and that chooses him; and Elain, who’s own fiancé didn’t fight to find a way to still be together, wants to choose the one she loves.
And finally, there is a balance and a symmetry that SJM likes to bring to her couples, especially in regards to sexual and romantic experience. What is the best solution to making the playing field a bit more even between a 540 year old Fae and a 23 year old human turned Fae, especially if he was in love with someone for centuries? She also needed to be deeply in love and committed to someone. Azriel and Elain each having a former love and, also being passed over and rejected by that former love is important to their romantic journey; because not only is it something that they can relate to and understand in one another, but it is also stands as a contrast for each of them when it is confronted with a love that is returned and cherished.
There is another parallel here though (as an aside, but does still tie in). In the beginning of ACOWAR, Azriel made decisions that would make Mor uncomfortable and that she wouldn’t like in favor of what was best for Rhysand and the court. Specifically, the decision to bring Eris in and make a deal with him. Elain does the same with Graysen in ACOMAF when she risks her position in society, her engagement, and ultimately Graysen in order to help Feyre and her court and by extension the whole of Prythian and the mortal realms. These decisions are ultimately what triggered the downfall of Mor/Azriel and Elain/Graysen. I don’t see Azriel and Elain being willing to make that sacrifice again, if it means giving up each other.
Elain is not going to be a stepping stone for Azriel. She is not going to be a plot device that spurs him to find his ‘true love’ and mate. Especially if that mate is a someone who wasn’t old enough to participate in the rite at Calanmai, has no prior experience with males, and for all intents and purposes would have no other option outside of Azriel. That is not how SJM likes to position the scales between her endgame couples. Sarah purposefully inserting Nesta thinking about Elain’s sexual history with Graysen and that she found enjoyment in it is also experientially putting her on more equal footing with Azriel.
Azriel and Elain have both been in love with people who prioritized other things over Azriel and Elain and did not cherish the love they offered them. It will be so poetic when Azriel and Elain realize that the feelings they had for Mor and Greyson will pale in comparison to the love they find in one another that is accepted, chosen, and fought for.

Chapter 1 - Meet Cute
February 7, 2023, New York
The place, little larger than a wine cellar, was too crowded for her tastes. The stench of alcohol and sweat mixed with a hint of mould created a new, nauseating, fourth odour, but Feyre was sure Tamlin would appreciate such a large audience. The trio, made up of her boyfriend, drummer Andras and bassist Ianthe, hadn’t yet hit the stage, and judging by the absence of the usual backstage hustle and bustle, she suspected it wouldn’t happen anytime soon. A real pity, above all because the audio system didn’t seem made to support the terrible commercial disgrace that was currently coming out of the speakers. Probably a trip to the bar, a long counter with a reflective surface placed as the only defence between drunk idiots and a wall of shiny bottles, would have done her good, but since she knew she wasn't supposed to be there, and that the only thing between her and a denied entry was a fake ID she had since high school, she didn’t want to risk it. In Sacramento, where she was from, no one would mind giving her a shot or two because no one wanted to upset her father, or be blacklisted by her sister Nesta, who recently took over the company. After all, bars needed the biggest food mogul in the country, even if they didn’t want to admit it. The privilege of growing up in a wealthy and well-liked family hadn’t escaped Feyre, and although things hadn’t gone so well for a while, now everything was back to normal, she entered the school she dreamed of ever since she was a child, and her family was scattered across the United States, intent on building an identity outside their surname. If only her mother could’ve seen her, with her combat boots and smudged eyeshadow under her eyes. Tamlin didn’t like it, but Feyre felt she looked older wearing makeup, and nothing was going to make her abandon the comfort of her old Doctor Martens for a pair of stilettos. Acting like that made her a black sheep of high society, and if someone recognized her, maybe some economic geek, and posted a picture online, she was sure it would soon end up in some uninteresting tabloid with an exaggerated headline, but she never cared and wasn’t going to start now. In the beginning, attending the New York Academy of Arts had been just a childhood fantasy, but when, growing up, she realized it could put two days of road between her and the busybodies at the Camelia Waldorf, the dream almost turned into obsession. She missed nothing of California. Not the weather, not the sea, not the desirable appearance hiding one of the rottenest places in the world. The East Coast was different, grey in the northern part, sure, but every neighbourhood had a secret to uncover and no one tried to deny the rats roaming the garbage were the real owners of every city. Feyre was sure Tamlin fell in love with her cynicism, even if the songwriter used to repeat he appreciated how much she could see beauty in everything. They met in a café, his long blond hair pulled back as he scribbled on a leather-bound notebook. An involuntary sad smile spread across her lips. Things had changed a lot since the band started to gain exposure and with them who attended their shows. A small group of men approached her silently, all of them way older than Feyre and undoubtedly interested in something very different from the chit chat she was used to. The other patrons didn’t seem to notice anything, or maybe they didn’t want to, determined not to poke their noses into matters that didn’t concern them. It had been a long time since Feyre trusted in the help of good Samaritans, and surely there weren’t any hidden under bleached locks and pretentious second-hand purchases.
In The Forest
@sparklingreader I finally completed it 😪. Can't say it's the best thing I've ever written but hey I'm still new to this and I still have a lot to learn.

Chapter 8
Graysen and his two companions trod carefully around the dense forest. They remained on alert for any noise or movement that could indicate any form of danger. The stories about this place were right. There was some sort of magic to it that made the three men felt like they did not belong here. This feeling has been creeping under their skin since they had crossed the ward. Being here, it was even harder to believe that Elain could have survived this strange place.
A rustling caught the attention of the three men making made them stop. Graysen’s grip on his axe tightened. His companions walked closer to stand on either side of him. The sound became louder. Something was coming towards them. Graysen caught a glimpse of white fabric and golden brown hair emerging behind the trees. A gasp escaped him when Elain walked closer and stopped a few metres away from them.
She stood there in her white dress and unbound hair, looking straight at Graysen. The heavy bags under her eyes were gone and she looked better than she had in months. He wondered for a minute if it was really her or just an illusion. Beside Graysen, the two other men had gone completely still.
‘’Elain? Is that really you?’’ Graysen managed to say after a gulp.
She narrowed her eyes at him, ‘’of course it is. Did you think I was a ghost?’’
Graysen released a sigh of relief but did not loosen his grip on the axe. She could have been turned into anything while being here. ‘’I saw the letter you sent your sisters. I was worried about you,’’ he tried his best to sound sympathetic.
Elain huffed a laugh and crossed her arms in front of her. ‘’If you were really worried about me you would have followed me into the woods instead of running away like the coward you are.”
Graysen flinched at her words. He opened his mouth to say something but Elain cut him off. ‘’I don’t care what you have to say. Leave this place at once.’’
Graysen frowned, confusion taking over his features. ‘’I came here to get you back. Your sisters are looking for you.’’ Her eyes widened slightly at the mention of her sisters. ‘’Now stop acting like a brat and let’s get out of here.’’ Graysen moved forward to grab her but Elain took a step back, adding more distance between them.
‘’Don’t you dare touch me,’’ she said between gritted teeth. ‘’You will get out of here. I am not leaving.’’
‘’Grays-‘’ he lifted his hand to stop one his friend from speaking. Anger started rise in him as he looked at Elain.
‘’This is about that man you met, isn’t it?’’
Elain’s hands balled into fists at her sides. Her voice remained firm when she spoke, ‘’Yes. But it is about much more than him.’’
Graysen could not stop the sardonic laugh that escaped him. ‘’I see now. This was all an act. You pretended to be hurt when in fact you came running to him.’’
‘’Don’t start accusing me of something you did. You cheated on me with not a single ounce of remorse,’’ Elain retorted. Then she crossed her arms, looking more relaxed than him. ‘’Maybe I should thank you after all. If you were not a lying bastard and a brute, I would not have had to run away from you. And I would not have met him.’’
Graysen rushed forward and grabbed Elain’s arm. ‘’Let me go you fucking brute,’’ she tried to push him away but he pulled her closer so their faces were inches apart.
‘’Listen to me little bitch. You –‘’
‘’Let her go,’’ Graysen heard the deep voice drawl before a man emerged from behind the trees.
.....
Graysen dropped Elain’s arms and stepped back the moment he saw Lucien prowl in their direction. Behind Graysen, the two other men raised their knives with trembling hands. Elain felt her body relax at the feeling of Lucien’s chest pressing against her back. She closed her eyes and inhaled deeply, savouring the feeling of warmth and safety that surrounded Lucien.
When Elain opened her eyes, she saw Graysen looking at them with rage and disgust. ‘’You left me so you can whore yourself to this random man you find in this wretched place?’’
Elain felt the reverberation of Lucien’s deep growl at Graysen’s words. Graysen and his companions’ faces paled as the realization that Lucien might not be any random man started to hit them. Lucien moved in front of Elain and stared down at Graysen. He held his axe higher at Lucien’s next words, ‘’careful of what you say.’’
‘’What are you?’’ Graysen said with a voice uneven with fear.
Lucien grinned at him. ‘’You don’t want to find out. Now get out of here.’’ His voice remained smooth and his calm demeanor did not falter despite the axe in Graysen’s hand. But it was not Graysen’s axe that threatened to harm Lucien.
The blond man behind Graysen threw his knife and it flew past Graysen, straight to where Elain and Lucien stood. Elain did not have time to gasp as Lucien caught the knife in his hand and threw it back in the direction where it came from. The man cried in pain and fell onto the forest floor as the blade imbedded itself in his shoulder.
Graysen looked back at his friend in horror. ‘’Son of a bitch,’’ he said. When he turned around, he lifted his axe, aiming it at Lucien’s head as he ran to him. Elain called out his name but Lucien had already moved out of Graysen’s way. With unnatural speed, the shifter reached the man’s side, punching him in the face.
Graysen staggered but remained standing. He wiped the blood coming out of his nose and looked between Lucien and Elain with horror. ‘’Graysen let’s get out of here,’’ said the other man kneeling at the side of his injured friend. This one at least had the common sense to not attempt anything that would get him hurt or worse.
‘’Not before I kill him.’’ Graysen retrieved a knife from his pocket and charged at Lucien again. He slashed around with his knife in one hand and the axe in the other. Elain stood aside, barely breathing, as Lucien dodged his attacks with little effort. With a hard kick of his feet, Lucien sent Graysen’s axe flying off before he punched him hard enough that Graysen hit the tree where Elain was standing.
Graysen panted as he braced himself with his arm against the tree. His friends shouted for him to get out but he ignored them. ‘’Ready to give up?’’ Lucien asked him. Elain was frozen in place as he watched him spitting blood on the leaves that blanketed the ground. She did not feel any pity for him though. They had warned him, but he had refused to leave. Behind him, his companions were slowly retreating. They were ready to leave him there.
Graysen lifted his head to look at Elain who was close. ‘’Bitch,’’ he hissed before he run to her with his knife. Eyes fixed on the blade, Elain did not see the moment Lucien shifted. In an instant, Lucien jumped on Graysen just before the knife could touch Elain. He fell backwards and Lucien stood above him with his massive paws on either sides of his head. Graysen’s eyes widened at the sight of the beast. Before he could lift the knife to hurt Lucien, the shifter planted his claws in his right hand. Graysen screamed as the sharp claws pierced his hand through skin and bones before coming out on the other side.
Lucien growled above him. ‘’Lucien wait,’’ Elain shouted before he could take a bite out of Graysen. He stilled. Elain walked to them. She stopped behind Graysen and kneeled. She bent down so her lips were close to his ears. ‘’If you ever set foot here again,’’ Elain said with the steadiest voice that she could muster, ‘’I will rip you to shreds before he can even touch you.’’ Elain doubted that she would be able to do such a thing, but she wanted Graysen to be afraid.
Elain looked at Lucien and when his eyes met hers, she nodded. Lucien retracted his claws and walked away from Graysen. Elain moved to stand next to Lucien, placing a hand on his furry head. Graysen cried in pain, tears streaming down his face, as he held his bloody hand. He looked at Elain and Lucien. When the latter growled, Graysen quickly got up. He joined his friends who looked like they were about to faint. Elain stood beside Lucien as she watched Graysen walk back to the wards.
.....
As soon as Lucien had shifted back, Elain had thrown herself in his arms, allowing him to carry her back to their house. “Are you alright?” Lucien asked when he set her down on the bed. Elain smiled at him and nodded.
He did not seem convinced by her timid answer. So Elain took his face in her palms and kissed him. She dragged Lucien to lie on top of her on the bed. Lucien braced himself on his forearms as he deepened the kiss. Elain moved a hand to grab his hair, pulling on the smooth strands. Lucien groaned and although the sound sent a rush of heat to her core, Elain giggled at his reaction.
Lucien pulled back with a grin. “What?” he flicked her nose. Elain wrapped her arms around his neck. “I think…” she gulped, trying to find the courage to open her heart to him. “Lucien –‘’ her heartbeat accelerated so much Lucien was probably able to feel it pounding in her chest with how close they were.
His eyes were fixed on her. One of his hands cupped her face, his thumb moving soothingly over her cheek. Elain closed her eyes. Lucien lowered his head and rested his forehead against hers. “I love you.”
Elain’s eyes opened at his words. She gaped at him. “You do?” she whispered. Lucien nodded, eyes still closed. “I do too.”
Lucien opened his eyes then. Elain looked at him “You do?” he asked.
“Yes,” she said, her face breaking into a grin.
Lucien laughed with her and let his body fall onto Elain. “Lucien you’re crushing me,” Elain’s voice was muffled beneath him. Lucien wrapped his arms around Elain’s waist and turned on the bed so that she could lie on top of him.
Elain beamed at him, “I love you.”
Lucien pinched her side, making her laugh louder. “I love you too.”
Thank you for reading!! ♥
Your characters are in a universe where they must dress color-coded. Who wears what?
Ah how fun! Thank you for the ask!
Since it's non specific, I'll pick Dragons and Kingdoms. I'm not sure if this color choice means personality or what color they like, sooo I'll just see how it goes lol
Graysen... I usually see him vibing with blue, but also he's VERY wallflower energy and anxiety through the roof. I'm going to say the kind of dark blue that's almost black. He is very different, and does his absolute utmost to try and hide that. There's a lot more to his thoughts and actions than what most people notice or care to understand, and he's just trying to get by.
Talwin wears red. I recently made the realization she dyes her hair red but it ends up being more mahogany because of her natural brown shade, and she uses beets when she can't get a hold of henna from the bigger markets with connections to the south. She loves to wear red when she can as well. She's also very vibrant and energetic! If a bit quick to anger.
Almyra wears white. (Those are her scale colors but says they gotta wear clothes so) She's a bit aloof, rather sarcastic, and likes to poke fun at those around her. She has trouble blending in outside of very specific circumstances, though she tries.
Keith wears brown. He's a normal guy, good humored, with a flair for the dramatic and pranks, but is ultimately reliable when needed. Earnest if over the top, and stubborn. Has a warm depth if anyone takes time to get past the first layer.
Okay but the fact that within a mere Fae-second Graysen will have turned old and grey, even more bitter and his new wife is probably about to leave him…
Elucien better takes it up a notch (asap) so Graysen gets to witness what true love means in his little life.
