I find myself consistently surprised with the type of game that Indiana Jones and the Great Circle actually is. Like many people, I think I had defaulted to assuming that this new, big budget, Indiana Jones game would just be something akin to Uncharted or Tomb Raider. When it was said that the game as actually played from first person, I think we all thought it would be something closer to a Wolfenstein style shooter. We were all wrong, and how fantastic that is.
Instead of being focused exclusively on action or climbing up things, Indiana Jones feels like a real deal adventure that slots right into the series I love so much. So much of this game is taking in sights, exploring nooks and crannies to find treasure, or otherwise doing the exact things we all expect Indy to do. It's made in a such a way that while the combat does come, it feels appropriate to the character and it doesn't take over the vibe the game is going for. Indiana Jones was never one for mowing down thirty Nazis in ten seconds, not at least in the same way Machine Game's other protagonist, BJ Blazkowicz is. While that works for that franchise, Indiana Jones has something different going for it. It has something unique all to its own, and it's making for a hell of a video game.
It's remarkable to me just how much Machine Games understood the assignment with Indiana Jones. This is a game that, in spite of this sounding cliche, really feels like you're playing a brand new Indiana Jones movie. A new story of adventure in the prime of the character, designed with care, and zigging when it could always default to a zag. I'm excited every night after work just to see where another hour of this game will go. Thus far, I haven't been disappointed, whether I'm fighting off some fascists, or just taking some pictures around the Vatican.
I feel I have so much of the game to go, but if you'll excuse me, I need to get back to looking for cat mummies and whipping fascists.
