Backrooms is the best horror movie of the year so far, loved it
Ji Hyun (Oh Jun Taek) is a freshman at a university in Seoul. He comes from a small rural town and is used to living in the quiet countrysid
The first two episodes are now available on Viki!
(four episodes are now available, as of 4/6)
And some reviews are already in:
After watching episodes 1 & 2–
The positives:
They made this series like a true kdrama
The production value is excellent
There’s quality in the writing, in the direction, the settings, the cinematography
It’s longer episodes
It’s more episodes
The negative:
It feels like “grooming” and I’ve really never felt like that about any of the other hundred, or so, BLs I’ve watched, before. I don’t even like using that word, because it triggers all the homophobia out there, but I’m just calling it like I see it…so far.
Granted, it’s only the first 2 episodes and there might be a misconception on my part, so I guess we’ll just have to see where it goes.
ADDENDUM (with spoilers):
With the 3rd and 4th episodes, I’m feeling better about the relationship between Ji Hyun and Jae Won. They really had my heart pounding in a couple of scenes.
If that bitch of an ex-girlfriend of Jae Won’s keeps coming between the two, I don’t think that will help his state of mind.
I hope the restaurant owner, Ji Hyun’s boss, kicks her ass! She needs a good ass-kicking! 😃
All in all, so far, I think this is one of the emotionally truest, and deepest stories, yet, in Korean BL.
I really think this one will succeed in redefining what bl
can ascend to.
Rian Johnson's great directing PART VII: Taking hands
Rian Johnson’s great directing PART V
A good angle can make a difference
I have never watched a show more powerful than greys! The emotions it causes are so raw
You've probably already noticed this but
How has it taken me this long to realise that when Barney is being serious, his voice is always so much lower than normal?!
Just some of the comments on 6x16 and the Bamon scene where Bonnie shows Damon her pain.
[Japanese artists] are fascinated with the possibilities of putting emotion to the eyes. If you look closely to the eyes of animated characters, they always have a message, either emotional or intelectual.
Carl Macek, Comiqueando #26 (March 1997)
When asked why japanese characters tend to have big eyes, late Robotech mastermind Carl Macek made this observation after suggesting animator Max Fleischer's influence, and how "there was a strange synchronization, that evolved into the current anime look".
Reading this changed the way I look at anime, manga, and even movies made in Japan. Japanese productions often have small budgets compared to north american ones, but it is usually compensated with storytelling techniques. Eyes, poses, expresions, enviroments, static sequences in general; I often see japanese media making the most out of the less as much of possible; even when the budgets become huge, this philosophy of sorts can still be apreciated because it is useful.
