Greek Temples

How did the Greeks keep the constant “wow factor” in each of the temples they built? How did they keep from becoming redundant in the designs they carved on the pediments?? 

The way the Greeks successfully incorporated personality into their carvings is amazing to me. Their attention to detail (like the little boy playing with his toes and the columns being fluted) is phenomenal and fascinating all at the same time.
