The plan failed.
You were supposed to be the distraction.
Purple will sneak behind, opening the chute, and Red will be the one shooting, while all you simply have to do is talk to Green. Everyone knew of Green's unusual puppy crush on you. Despite everything, they spared you. You know that because they had so many opportunities to kill you. . . It should've been foolproof.
Instead, Green laughed and said, "Alright. Where are they?"
Before Purple could even touch the chute, Green shot a tendril through their visor, penetrating them and taking their life. Red follows short in despair, screaming and firing nonsensically, but Purple's lifeless body got thrown towards them.
You took the gun. Tried to save Red by shooting salt water on the impostor's tendril, and it did work, but you had to watch a baby impostor quickly take over them like they were nothing. Green destroyed your weapon in a matter of seconds. For some reason, it was really, really, determined to win.
It was just so quick.
Now you're standing, trembling, and staring into the void. Do you just suck? Could there have been a way to save Purple and Red? A way to save everyone else? You can vaguely hear the alien's skin scraping across the floor, the dripping of blood, and its faint laughter.
"It would've been real ugly if you guys were to win," it sing-songs, its voice growing nearer. Your visor can't seem to stop sweating—Green's voice used to sound innocent, a crewmate who was more than eager to help. Now it's nothing but an arrogant taunt. "But, pfft, not like that would happen. It's just us now."
Its words repeat in your mind. It's just us. That wasn't true; you're alone. You are the only crewmate left.
Honestly, you give up.
A deep sigh leaves you. You weakly start to sit down, but Green takes the initiative to grab and position you in front of them. When you try to look away, another tentacle turns your head to face it.
"Green," you grunt in defeat, glaring at them.
"That's me," it replies, looking awfully cheerful. You catch yourself wanting to retaliate, to disagree with them, but—have you ever truly known Green? Since when did they become an alien with a lust for blood? Besides… them entering the Skeld was the first time you'd met them.
Their skin feels like smooth rubber. It leaves you trails of goo, coiling around you almost possessively, as if it didn't want to let you go. Like they enjoyed being wrapped around you.
"Don't look so sour," they say, seemingly frowning. "Aren't you curious? I have a lot to say, but I'd love for you to ask first."
Your visor furrows. It's staring at you intently, and it feels like every move you make doesn't go unnoticed. You're being studied.
You huff. "…you should've just killed me."
"No."
Green looks crazed. That was a straight and clear no.
"No?" you repeat in absent curiosity.
"Why do you think you're still alive? I thought I was pretty obvious," it replies, swaying tentacles and its head occasionally.
"Oh, no, I do know. We all knew," you quickly remark, "but I wasn't sure if you were serious."
It pauses, watching you, then it snickers. "Not sure if I was serious?"
"You're weird," you mutter. It cuts off like you wanted to say more, but you end up saying nothing else.
With an amused snort, the impostor takes the lead anyway. Even from your conversation earlier, they talked and talked, coming off as someone who loved hearing their own voice so much. Maybe a part of it enjoyed that you listened attentively—which, notably, is what you've done for the majority of time that you've known them. Especially when they talked about their home life.
"You're the only crewmate I actually like," it grins, giving you a flick on your cheek. "Although I have my host to thank for that. Perhaps their emotions intensified when I took over, or maybe that's my own undoing."
Host? As in the real Green? You can't help but feel pained comfort from that. The fact that in the beginning, they were someone. Granted, your comfort is quickly replaced with guilt and shame. Green used to be a person… It would've been better if they weren't.
"I actually didn't want those feelings at first," it continues. "The same way Blue had me entranced, y'know? But compared to you, you posed no real threat," with a widened and empty visor, it brings its face closer to yours, "no wonder I didn't kill you the first time I realized I liked you."
Huh?
"You grew on me!" it exclaims, backing off, yet the grip stays the same. "Whenever I found the chance to get rid of you, I hesitated, because I'd go ahead and imagine what would happen if you left me in this godforsaken ship."
A noise comes out of you, but you're not even sure what it was. Green doesn't pay you any mind, except for the little laugh that comes out of them. "Yeah, I like to kill. But little by little, before I knew it, my motivation went from fun into you."
"Me…?" you murmur mindlessly, getting used to the feeling of having its tendrils wrapped around your body.
"Midway through, you're the reason why I started killing the others."
You stare at them in disbelief. Your mind is blank. Confused.
Suddenly, it rotates you until you face a horrifying sight of Cyan's dead, sliced-off visor. You tremble. The voice blends from Green into the former gemologist. "Everyone wanted to talk to you. Hah. Even that I can understand; it's you."
When you look away, you gape at Lime and Brown's fused bodies instead. "But then they just started taking you away from me." A noticeable hint of anger you could hear as it rips the bloodied amalgam apart.
Green shifts you to the deceased doctor next. The gouged-out face forces you to look at the bone inside. "I thought it'd be the same for Blue. I admired them too after all, but it was surprisingly easy to devour their beautiful face."
"…stop," you grit, wriggling in your binds. Nothing happens.
"I have so many feelings that I didn't know what to do with them," it decides to continue with Black's voice. The shattered body is at your front, but you roll your vision to avoid looking. You can see it be replaced with another body. White. "It drove me crazy."
Your breathing is erratic. It comes to a full stop when you hear the voice behind you. Purple. "But you know what? I never liked competition, whether from the killing, or for your attention."
It turns you around, but instead of meeting Purple, you see Red. The undead body groans emptily, its hands reaching for you, but Green keeps it at bay.
"And look at where we are now."
Red is tossed aside, and Green looms over you, using their squirming body to cover you with its shadow. They have a low chuckle, inching their face closer and closer to yours. From this distance, you can clearly see all of the cracked lines on their visor, far more detailed than you'd like.
You quietly stare at each other for a moment. It has a stupid grin on its face.
"…Okay," you deadpan. "What now?"
It reacts in a way like they just shrunk. "Excuse me?"
"Yeah," you say, firm. "What now? Everyone's dead, and you have me. What now?"
Green squints their visor. They don't reply fast enough for your liking, so you continue.
"So it was all a game to you. You don't even like me," you exhale, shaking your head as much as it allows you to. "Just kill me like the rest of them."
You didn't know what kind of reaction you were expecting. Green bonks their visor against yours, earning a shy clink. They revert back to their crewmate form, gently putting you on the floor in the process, rendering you into a short mess of confusion.
"You told me this already," they shrug. Green is back to their original state, the one you met, except their visor is damaged. "And I already told you no. It's… embarrassing to admit, but I adore you."
Not only did their words weird you out, but the impostor has the gall to place a hand on your cheek. Their hand is alarmingly warm—but as soon as you thought of that, you smacked their hand away.
"You're the only one left alive because I want you to be here," it says, chasing your gaze. This demeanor is so flipping different from their whole 'talking dead crewmates' show. "I can still be the same Green that you got to know of. Me being an unpaid intern is true. I have my host's life memories. I am Green—"
A scoff escapes you. "What? And pretend none of this ever happened? That is some bulls—"
"Correct! Aha," they laugh as a few tendrils come out of their back, kicking baby aliens from getting near you. "It's not like you have a choice! Either we go to our destination together, or I'll kill you, and then I'll kill myself!"
You gasp, your visor widening at their strong statement.
"Why would you…" you shakily mutter, "to that extent?"
Green grabs your face, leaning the closest they could without physically touching you. "Because you're mine! And I'm yours! I don't know, hah, even I'm confused! I hate you so much, but I can't leave you… I can't! I didn't expect myself to live this long too!"
It's hyperventilating. You do your utmost best not to match their breathing.
"What did I even do?" you rasp. You can't even imagine the expression you must have right now. "For you to like me this much?"
Green backs off.
To your surprise, they answer with genuine honesty. "There's a memory that keeps sticking out whenever I think of you. The first time you smiled at me—or, at least, Green."
You don't have a response to that.
It smiles at you. "But for the memory I made with you, I'll keep that one to myself."
"Even I don't know what will happen when we get off this spaceship," Green mutters. "But I do know I want to be with you."
