Today I had a lovely unexpected visit from Calani and Miles. They’re spending a fortnight or so doing a lap around the ring road and just so happened to be passing through the Skagi peninsula today. They met me at the studio and promptly presented me with two packets of mint slices courtesy of Mish. I wasn’t aware of how much I had missed and needed mint slices until I was holding two packets in my greedy little hands. So thanks Mish!
We had lunch at Borgin, where they cook up a pretty adequate buffet lunch for the school kids on weekdays and invite everyone else along for just 1500 isk. Following that we drove to Grettislaug, which are two manmade tubs built over natural hot springs. It was relatively close - about 30 minutes drive from Sauðárkrókur (the biggest town on our peninsula, 40 minutes from Skagi) along a dirt road with nice views of the adjacent peninsula Tröllaskagi.
It was a simple set up: a few cabins to rent out, an info centre and cafe, toilets/change rooms and the two hot tubs. In comparison to the tourist-heavy Blue Lagoon, Grettislaug could not have been more different in terms of comfort, peace and quiet. We were only sharing the pools with a nice couple from Colorado and there were great views from the pools of the surrounding mountains and ocean. The bottom of the pools were lined with slippery algae-covered rocks, but the water was a gentle clear 38ish degrees so it didn’t really feel dirty at all.
I wouldn’t have minded staying for a lot longer, but Cal & Miles had to drive me home and then embark on another 3.5 hour drive to get to Drangsnes for the night. I would absolutely recommend Grettislaug to anyone visiting, if you can find the time to wander up into the North! (and they’re also closed from October 1 until May, but I’m pretty confident I could just jump the fence...)
