MAP02: Underhalls - Doom II (1994) Developer - Id Software Publisher - GT Interactive Software
Underhalls is the second level of Doom II and is set in a sewer system on Earth that the Doom Marine travels through in order to reach the Spaceport. Throughout the level, the player will have contend with various demonic enemies including the rifle-wielding Zombiemen, Shotgun Guys, Fireball throwing Imps and the charging pink Demons that only appear on higher difficulties. The map is laden with explosive barrels that can be set off by the player and enemies, and contains, health pickups, armour, and ammunition.
The player is tasked with acquiring two key cards in order to reach the level exit. The first is the Red Key Card that can be found in the brick building in the courtyard that is defended by Zombiemen and Shotgun Guys. Collecting the key card however will release a second wave of enemies that will encircle the player's position, and must be dealt with before the player can safely proceed. After backtracking to the Red Door in front of the starting area (that Shotgun Guys may have teleported into) and unlocking it, the player will be able to hit a switch that opens up the route to the Blue Key Card.
The second half of the level is a corridor leading to a room with two holes in the ground. Jumping into the holes will lead the player into one of two small arenas that can quickly kill an unprepared player, but it is possible to thin the horde by shooting at enemies from above before diving in. The Blue Key Card is in the pit, and can be used to unlock the door that leads out of the pit, as well as the door to the exit room. The exit room itself is another ambush, containing a group of Shotgun Guys that will need to be dealt with quickly. Clicking on the Exit Switch brings up a scoreboard noting the percentage of enemies killed, items collected, secrets found and will compare the player's time to complete the level with the par time of one minute and thirty seconds.
Before reaching the Red Key Card arena, the player can take an optional side route. The path is blocked by Zombiemen and Shotgun Guys who are guarding the Super Shotgun, an extremely powerful weapon that can be unlocked early here and makes clearing the level, and suriving ambushes much easier. There is also a secret found by clicking on a wall to the left of the Red Key Card, opening an alcove with a blue armour pickup, some Shotgun Guys and a teleport leading to the start of the level.
The number of enemies present in the level changes depending on the game's difficulty. The I'm Too Young To Die and Hey, Not Too Rough difficulties contain twenty-one Zombiemen, five Imps and twenty-one Shotgun Guys. The Hurt Me Plenty difficulty has twenty-two Zombiemen, nine Imps, thirty-eight Shotgun Guys and a single Demon. The Ultra-Violence difficulty has twenty-two Zombiemen, sixteen Imps, fifty Shotgun Guys and two Demons. The Nightmare difficulty has the same number of monsters as Ultra-Violence, but they respawn indefinitely and move faster. The items the player can collect in the level are not impacted by the difficulty.

A major change in the progression of Doom II: Hell on Earth was the ability for the player to retain their inventory between levels. The entire game is treated as a single, stand-alone episode, and as such the player is more invested in fully exploring each level for ammo or power-ups before continuing.
