Okay, so I like how the concept of revenge was tackled in RWBY V9E8, which is reminiscent of how it was tackled in GUNxSWORD - no spoilers for GUNxSWORD (please, watch it if you can, it’s also on Crunchyroll and is a spaghetti western anime with shapeshifting whip swords and cute plot relevant turtles and surprisingly, mechas, on top of revenge being an overarching theme) but there will be spoilers for RWBY.

Obviously Neo was having the time of her life confronting Ruby with all of Ruby’s perceived failures. After all, Neo has spent the past few volumes hunting down Ruby, believing her to be responsible for Roman’s death. Roman, as we all know, is pretty much the only person Neo cares about, so losing him was a huge blow, and Cinder had successfully deflected Neo’s thirst for vengeance from herself - to Ruby. And now that Ruby and Neo are together in the Ever After, and Neo’s Semblance has evolved into more complex illusions, there’s no doubt Neo would seize this opportunity to not only destroy Ruby but to make her suffering painful and tedious. Make Ruby suffer at the hands of the people who symbolize her failures and guilt. And as a cherry on top, Neo brutally kills the creature who continues to burn with hope for Ruby.

Yet, when Ruby finally reaches the point where she chooses ascension and drinks the tea, Neo is not gloating. She isn’t cheering, she isn’t happy, she just sits there as though in shock that she managed to get this far (Perhaps she expected Ruby to put up more of a fight?). Neo spent so much time and energy determined to destroy Ruby, and once she does it, she’s empty, she just accomplished the one overarching purpose of her life, and is left with nothing else, leaving her open to the Curious Cat.

Maybe, in that moment, Neo realized that even if she killed Ruby, that would never bring Roman back or undo what has happened. And now that Ruby is gone, Neo has no one else to blame or punish for Roman’s death.

I finished rewatching GUNxSWORD sometime before this episode dropped, so as a summary, it’s about a man’s quest for revenge as well, this time for his bride. He walks his world determined to hunt the murderer down (though unlike Neo who has decided to pin the death of Roman on Ruby, the murderer in this series really is guilty), and in one episode, when he is asked what he will do next once he has killed his bride’s murderer, he doesn’t know what to do next after that.

And that is what happened to Neo.

She doesn’t know what to do next. She finally got to see Ruby suffer and drink the tea and disappear, and she is now truly left with nothing.

And while she didn’t know what to do next, the Curious Cat answered that question for her.

Day 112: Van (Gun X Sword)

Happy Dann of Thursday! Today I was helping my friend get some references for a mecha project he was working on, and we briefly touched on GunXSword. I love Van, and his giant sword mecha, the Dann of Thursday, which I will probably draw tomorrow! But in case I don’t, here’s a bonus doodle from when I made a hypothetical Super Robot team a few months back!

I think Gun×Sword might be perfect. Like…I can’t think of a single significant flaw.

I’m going real slow through SRW30, at least in part because i’m just enjoying my time with the animations and all that, but damn if there aren’t some fun interactions going on.

But my absolute favorite right now has got to be Lelouch Meeting Claw, and when he tries to do the smart thing and geass the man and it doesn’t work, and Claw just want’s to have a friendly talk Lelouch just immediately-

Lelouch: CC THROW NUNALLY IN THE CAR WE NEED TO GO CC: I- Lelouch: HOLY SHIT YESTERDAY WE NEED TO BE OUT OF HERE THIS MAN IS BAD NEWS

like, it seems like such a wild over reaction....Except that Claw is, at least in his home series, like weirdly WILDLY charismatic, especially to people who have even the slightest bit of orientation with his goals. Like the only people who DON’T end up following him and or liking him after a direct meeting are the two dudes who EXPLICITLY JUST WANT HIM TURBO DEAD.

Which Means, in a very very very real sense, He’s the ABSOLUTE WORST person Lelouch could possibly talk to, because if his weird charisma works (and it very well may) That’s a very real game over scenario there for everyone else.

I love it. I just love it, and it makes the speed run versions of everyone’s plots far better for seeing this reactions.
