Fluff!! Camp counselor!Haechan X Camp counselor!reader; ft. NCT Mark, WayV Kun, BLACKPINK Jennie, BLACKPINK Rose
CW: None! The most they do is kissing.
Hyuck: The boy you met at a summer camp who becomes your summer love
You all gathered in a circle on the grass field a little ways away from the cabins, per your boss’ request. Making sure all of your troop were situated and awaiting further instructions, you allowed your eyes to wander around the circle. Some faces were familiar to you, while others weren’t.
“Alright!” Kun, the camp leader, and your boss clapped his hands to get everyone’s attention. “Let’s start with a fun ice breaker so we can get to know everyone, does that sound fun?” All the little ones cheered at his statement, and you felt a smile grow on your face as you watched him go through the routine you’ve watched him go through many times before. You loved working with Kun, he had a knack for working with kids. He had the patience of a saint and always had such a positive attitude.
“Okay, since this is a big group, how about we let your troop leaders introduce themselves first! These are the people that will be making sure you’re all having fun during the next three weeks, so make sure to treat them well!” Kun motioned for all of you to get up, and you took that moment to see who you had worked within the previous summers.
You smiled as you locked eyes with Jennie, you two had met a couple of summers ago and you found out that despite her shy personality, she was one of the most bubbly people you met while working here. Her friend Rosie was here too, standing a little to your left, surrounded by the group of kids that she would be watching over during camp. You noticed quite a few of the little boys had taken a liking to her already.
There were two new faces, however, one of whom you had only worked with last summer and the other who you assumed was spending his first summer here. “Mark,” Kun spoke up, and you followed his gaze back to the boy who had been here last summer, “why don’t you start us off!”
He cleared his throat and nodded at Kun. “Hi, I’m Mark! And I, um, I started last summer, some of you already came up and said you recognized me so that’s pretty cool. Uh...yeah! I hope we have a blast this summer!” Mark introduced himself, it was a bit awkward but that’s what made him cuter.
“Hi! I’m Donghyuck! I joined this summer because Mark said he had so much fun with all of you last time, and I wanted to have fun with you guys too!” He smiled brightly at the kids and waved. He was kind of cute, you had to admit. After both of them, you introduced yourself, and Jennie and Rosie went after you.
“I saw the way you were looking at him,” Jennie wasted no time in coming up to bust you, giggling as you looked at her in mild shock. “Don’t worry, I don’t think anyone else noticed. Except maybe Rose, we talked about it before coming here.” Rosie waved at you with a giggle, nodding to confirm that she had indeed caught onto your little crush. Before you could reply, Kun came over to the three of you, clapping a hand on your shoulder.
“Hey, did you want me to set you two up?” He asked quietly with a laugh. You groaned, realizing that almost everyone had caught you gawking at the new kid.
As the week went on, your three friends kept pushing you and Hyuck together, trying to get you to talk. However, he seemed pretty quiet and you were way too flustered to have a proper conversation. You both exchanged a few words despite this and quickly became friendly with one another.
“Hey y/n, come sit with us!” Mark called over to you. Of course, by now Mark was in on ‘operation get y/n and Hyuck to fall in love’. You walked over to the bench they were sitting at, having a casual conversation before Mark went to go check on one of his troop kids who you all suspected was either about to cry or hit someone.
“So, you know, Mark isn’t the best person at keeping secrets,” Hyuck broke the silence, his eyes never leaving his kids. “I know you think I’m cute.”
You stuttered, not knowing how to respond. Here you all were, thinking you were being subtle but that wasn’t the case. “Don’t worry,” he glanced over at you, giggling at the look on your face. “I think you’re pretty cute too.”
“Oh,” was all you could say. This caused Hyuck to laugh even louder. He grabbed your hand, convincing Mark to keep an eye on his troop and Jennie to watch over yours.
“So, you think I’m cute?” You plucked up any courage you had, sending him a cheeky smile as you saw his cheeks turn the slightest bit pink. He whined about you teasing him, causing you to burst into laughter at how cute he was. Then, all laughing stopped.
He kissed you.
After that, you two were inseparable. He had called you quite a few nights in a row so that the two of you could talk, but it was mostly Mark complaining that it was gross to listen to his friend be so cute with someone, while Jennie and Rosie gushed over the both of you every minute of the calls. You two would sit together every chance you got, share stolen kisses and knowing glances, even your troops had figured it out.
However, to you, it felt that the summer had gone by quicker than it had started. You found out that Hyuck was roommates with Mark a few cities away from you. Every time you had voiced your concerns, Hyuck tried to convince you that the two of you could work despite the distance. "I could come and visit you, or you could come and stay with Mark and me when you have breaks! I swear, we can make this work. I swear," he never failed to send you his best puppy dog eyes, and on the last day, you caved.
"Okay, we'll try it out. Nothing serious though! Just...casual. I'll come to visit you and Mark when I can." He and Mark both high fived in pride at the accomplishment.
"Thank you, thank you, thank you!" Hyuck gave you a short but passionate kiss as you all said your goodbyes. "I'll be seeing you soon, okay? Call you when I get home!"
You waved him off, not knowing if this summer love would be something that continued into the coming seasons. You did know, however, that this was one summer you wouldn't be forgetting any time soon.
[11:05pm] you turn another page in the book you've been reading while in the company of your boyfriend, haechan. draped across his chest like a blanket, he rubs small circles on your back; more of a force of habit than anything at this stage but calming nonetheless.
"hm, i wish you knew how cute you look when you concentrate baby" he remarks as he starts playing with your hair as it hangs lazily in a messy bun.
"i really don't.. i go all cross-eyed" you reply, a frown appearing across your previously occupied expression.
upon hearing this, your boyfriend decides to shift you off of him for a few seconds, letting you settle on the sofa beneath you both as he gets to work on wrapping his hands around your stomach and reaching the crook of your neck, tickling you and catching you off guard.
"hyuck! stooooop!" you whine, trying your best to force him off of you and free yourself from his hands.
soon, it becomes a game for you both, him trying to get you to crack and admit that you indeed, look very cute when you concentrate, and you attempting to push him off and not have to give in.
after a good minute of playful and soft wrestling, you're suddenly inches away from each other's faces after one poor move sends you both tumbling onto the floor next to the sofa.
he smiles once more.
after a mere few seconds of this, haechan closes the distance between you, his lips colliding with yours in a kiss that is both soft and passionate at once. his lips were soft and plump, and you could taste a very faint and vague cherry flavour as the kiss deepened.
pulling away from the kiss, you giggle and smile up at him.
"are you wearing chapstick?" you question after a few seconds of silence.
"yeah.. me and mark went to the mall today and i saw it, i figured it might come in handy for situations like this" he explains in such a casual manner that you let out an audible laugh and squish his chubby cheeks affectionately.
"how did you know cherry was my favourite flavour?"
"that's for me to know and you to find out" he replies, winking.

"did you see y/n today?"
haechan thinks, by the sound of the voice, that it's mark who's speaking. he pulls the rest of the sweatshirt past his head, "no, did you?" haechan's grabbing for his socks, he swears he stuffed them in the front pocket of his backpack. "that's why i'm asking, idiot. she told me she would be here today." a tongue of frustration juts out from haechan's mouth, he hopes it just looks like he's agitated about his missing socks and not the fact that you always tell mark those things, always mark and never him.
haechan is out of the locker room in seconds, sneakers slipped on without socks. he's adjusting the hood of the sweatshirt, tucking his locks under the material, when he sees you lingering by the bleachers. you smile sheepishly when you see the boy coming from the locker rooms, "somehow, i thought it started at four and i thought i got here early but your coach told me you guys just finished." haechan can't help but laugh, so that's why you weren't here, "and we won, too. did he tell you that?"
he's by your side now, seated, though his feet are planted on the ground while yours are swinging back and forth, "he did tell me that, congratulations haechan, wish i could've seen you score today." haechan tucks a lip under his teeth, now's not the time for him to be so obvious, not when it's just you and him. he thinks that yet, his stares linger on you for a little longer than normal, his fingers are fiddling with the ridges of the bleachers, and his cheeks host the brightest hue of cherry red.
"hey, y/n, where were you today?" haechan's nose scrunches at an emerging mark, he really thought he could have the moment with you. mark approaches and sits on the other side of you. captain mark lee, haechan notes with shrewd annoyance, is wearing your sweater, his favorite of yours, the one with the worn polyester fabric that's pilling all over but still holds warmth snuggly. the one that haechan's been wanting to wear since day one.
mark swings his legs as well and haechan watches as you point it out, giggling now that mark is trying to swing in sync to your own pace. "wanna come over? my mom's been asking you to come over for dinner," marks eyes are on you, haechan can see that much, but he also misses the way your own eyes shift to himself. and what haechan doesn't see, mark does, and his lip twitches into a knowing smile, "haechan, you should come too, my mom misses you."
the boy himself is already in over his head and passing up the offer is the only way he sees to escape the despair that comes with being a third wheel, "no thanks, i have a shit ton of homework to do today." your hum in response is mixed with an undertone of a sigh, one that haechan is too sidetracked to notice. he takes his leave, "well, i'll see you two tomorrow i guess."
you and mark sit in silence for the minutes after his leave, mark sneaking small glances at your ever-changing expression, an open book to all your thoughts. "next time, y/n, next time."
well shit, maybe mark wasn't as clueless as you pegged him to be.
in agitation, mark shoves the last of his books into his backpack, class is about to start soon and if he doesn't get going now, well then he might as well give up his perfect attendance, no tardy record. haechan leans against the locker next to his own, a seemingly bored expression on display to hide the inner rumblings of his thoughts.
"so how was dinner last night, did you guys miss me?" haechan's trying to come off as nonchalant, he hates it when he has to pry just to satiate his curiosities. mark shuts his locker, swinging his backpack across one shoulder, "uh, dinner didn't happen and no, i didn't miss you but i bet y/n did." haechan's left in confusion on all fronts, "what do you mean it didn't happen? why would she miss me- wait, why did you not miss me?"
"well y/n said she was busy all of a sudden, something like that. as for-" the bells rings, signaling the end of passing period, and effectively cutting off the answers to all of haechan's worries. marks eyes widen and before he can even catch the boy by his arms, to shake and spill the words out of him, he's already sprinting down the emptying halls.
haechan sighs. he should be sprinting too but he's already late, might as well walk. the campus grounds are vast and he decides to take a stroll outside, the much longer way to his physics class. haechan is passing a few classes on his left, all of them filled with the chatter of students before a teacher begins their lectures, but there's one class that catches his eye. the window into the ceramics class reveals a clear view of you, eyebrows furrowed and trying to shape a little figure on the table before you. you've told him many times before that ceramics was your least enjoyed of all your courses, that you had taken it simply because you needed an art credit and while that might've been the reason you'd signed up, haechan can tell by the way you handle the little mold of clay, that you had stayed for much different reasons.
he thinks to tease you of it later but it's then during lunch where he stops himself because before he even so much as reaches the table your group frequents, there you are, showing the little figurine to mark, eyes glistening with pride and joy. "i think i did quite well this time, i even got praised." as haechan comes close, he sees the clay figure in full clarity for what it is, an ambiguous sitting shape with a heart cradled in its lap, lumpy in certain spots but emanating in the care and thoughtfulness with which it was made.
haechan slides into the seat across from you. "look," you sound softly to him, holding out the little figure in both your hands, "do you like it?" haechan swallows thickly when he looks up from your hands to your eyes, he sees the way they light up, he hopes. wordlessly, he nods, a small smiles tugs at his lips. he likes it, he really does so he questions, "what inspired you to make it?" it's in the way that you immediately eye mark, and the way that mark immediately hides his oncoming giggle, that haechan relinquishes his hopes.
mark walks you to class after your lunch break that day, he's a grade higher but a thousand times dumber, you think. "are you insane? why would you laugh at that specific moment?" in between small giggles, mark does his best to provide a reply, "you should've just told him that he was the one that inspired you." smacking his elbow, you purse your lips, "but then he'd know!"
the older boy stops walking for a second and you're five steps ahead when you notice. you turn. "what now, mark?" he holds a mischievous glint in his eyes, "he'd know what?" now his eyebrows are making little squiggly lines by his hairline and you take a few steps back to drag him by the arm. flushing, you whisper, figuring he already knew as much, "he'd know i like him."
if mark is considered your best friend and potential crush, then what about him? possibly also a best friend, though he could only hope you would talk to him a bit more, spend a bit more time with him, make more conversation with him during breaks. potential crush was for sure out of the picture right? the way you look at mark, the way you share you everything with mark, objects and secrets and everything in between, haechan isn't sure he can say the same for himself. he texts mark anyways. tell y/n ur busy, something bout soccer.
haechan's out the door a minute and a half before the bell rings, his teacher yelling at him to come back. he doesn't give a shit. mark always walks you home, he always does and haechan is so fucking fed up with it because he himself lives closer to you so why should he get to walk you home.
he arrives at the door to your last class just as the bell signals the end of the school day. there's only enough time for three deep breaths, panting breaths, before the door to your classroom is propped open and students begin filing out.
"y/n, over here!" he calls. your eyes widen at the sound of his voice and you turn to it, a smile already lifting the corners of your mouth. you're walking side by side with him, and haechan starts leading in the direction of your locker, despite needing to go to his own. "i can walk you home today." you turn your head to him, "what do you mean? i usually walk with-"
"mark, i know," he says it with a disclosed derision, "he's busy, had to go talk to coach or something, i don't know. but i can walk you, plus my house is just two streets down, remember?" he watches in anticipation as you retrieve your phone from your bag. his eyes do their best to peer over and he sees your lockscreen light with a notification from mark. "oh, yeah he said he's busy with soccer stuff." haechan's lip quirk in victory, his plan unfolding itself into perfection.
"can we go to my locker first though? i need to get some stuff, and we're on the way." he nods as if it wasn't in his intention to head in this direction and for that reason. he merely disregards the need to go to his locker. who cares if he has to bring a whole ass chemistry textbook home if he gets to go home with you.
it isn't until he's at your front steps that he musters up the courage. you're in the middle of keying in the pin numbers to your door pad when he speaks up, "hey y/n?" you give a hum in response, messing up the last two digits after hearing him voice your name. you abandon your attempts, turning to look at the questioning boy. "would you like to come watch my match next week?"
you take a step down so that you're two above from where he's standing, now the same height as him. frowning, "of course. i'm going to see you and mar-"
it seems that haechan really doesn't want to hear that name come from your mouth today because he interrupts you yet again, "yeah, but i'm asking if you'd want to come to watch me." your lips part and shut in search of what to say. haechan nudges a little further, "i want you to come watch me play, would you want to?"
you release a breath, biting down a smile, you manage a nod within all your flusteredness. your voice, a bare peep, "i want to," gives haechan all the courage he needs to grab one of your hands to give it a little squeeze before muttering a, "see you," and taking his leave. haechan's turning the corner out of your driveway when he sneaks a glance before the fence blocks his view of you. his heart hurls at the sight of you, still on your front steps, face buried in your hands. even from all the way here, the bright red flush of your cheeks can be seen through your fingers.
no one knows why that one boy on the field is scoring goals left and right. no one knows except you and him. from the moment haechan saw you on the bleachers, the other team was done for. it isn't even about impressing you anymore, it's not about making you proud. it's not a crush, it's these stupid feelings that never go away, never fade with time, or any amount of effort, at least, not in the knowledge that you are equally his as he is yours. it's not a crush, it's the sickening feeling in his gut when he sees you with someone other than himself, with mark, when he sees that sweater on mark instead of himself. it's not a crush, it's the way he feels the need to be with you all the damn time, the lingering feelings from whenever you leave his side that tell him that moments spent without you would be so much better if you were just there. haechan moves on the field with full conviction that it's not just a crush, it's love.
and so as the last whistle of the game blows, their team securing the win with haechan's last goal, he runs, no sprints, straight off the field to where you're seated in the stands. he brushes past all the people with hushed apologies and it's only when he's right in front of you does he realize how frenzied he likely seemed. he doesn't mind for more than a second though, because you've stood up and laced your arms around his shoulders, fingers on the back of his neck. he embraces you back and the kiss he gives to your cheek is something that just feels so natural and close to home. his forehead is on yours when he asks, his voice a bare minimum, "y/n, will you be my girlfriend?"
it isn't you that answers, rather it's a mark lee with a loud, "FUCK YEAH."
✧ end note — hey anon babe who requested this. apologies for making it fem. reader, i know you didn't specify. if you would like me to reupload with gender neutral reader, then send an ask and i'll be more than happy to. ♡
⧏ hyuck’s installment of the keep your cool collective ⧐
synopsis: you’ve decided that the boy in ‘66’ is yours.
✧ ice hockey player!hyuck x (fem.) reader x ice hockey player!jeno + best friend!renjun
✧ genres : fluff, minor angst ✧ word count : 2.3k ✧ disclaimer : swearing
✧ author’s note — finally my brain had the gall to pull through with this idea but i'm left with the realization that all my hyuck fics are just him simping for u.
hyuck internally sighs, his head ringing and ankles sore, as the buzzer goes off, signaling the end of the third round. he’s almost elated, even though he’s sure his team hasn’t won, by just the fact that the game is over. hyuck is by no means sick of ice hockey but lately, the mere idea of it drives him into exhaustion. as he turns to expect the disappointed stare of his coach, he’s surprised when he’s met with a halfhearted smirk. weird, the coach should know more than anyone how lazily this game had played out. but then, as an afterthought, he checks the scoreboard and realizes with an oh shit, that they were tied with the opposing team, somehow.
his line of vision is parting from the board when he makes unfortunate eye contact with the person entering the rink. your hair is pulled back with a pale pink scrunchie and your outfit is a certified mess of oversized hoodie and sweat shorts upon white sneakers. he can quite literally feel the heat that is quick to rush to his cheeks, unfailing to hide his flustered state. he knows he looks stupid but he still can't help but stare and ogle at new and blatant eye candy as she crosses the threshold into the cold space. half your figure is now covered by the wall that separates the stands with the rink though it doesn't matter because he's still equally enamoured by simply your presence.
"hyuck, why you staring at y/n?"
hyuck can only wince inwardly as he stutters out, "that's- that's y/n?" it seems unfair that renjun's been hoarding such a pretty specimen to himself. "like your best friend, y/n?"
"yeah, what about her?"
"br-bro, you never mentioned that she was pretty."
"hey, don't even think about it. you're the last possible person i'd set her up with. plus, she's with jeno, they went on a date after practice last time, remember?"
there's an underlying disappointment in donghyuck's tone when he's only able to produce a soft, "oh," because frankly he doesn't know why he's so worked up over someone who he's never even met and that's also dating one of his close teammates. amidst his confused trance, he almost fails to notice his coach call for a pre-game huddle.
he ends up tuning out most of it, now distracted by how jeno keeps glancing back at you and making funny faces, you returning them with the! cutest! little expressions he has ever had the pleasure to lay his eyes upon. the rest of the game is played out with enthusiasm on his part, even going so far as scoring in two more points. he's quick to doubt the truth but donghyuck knows that it's whoever that girl is in the front seats that's making him outdo himself.
the game ends and his team wins, claps and cheers at how the game had turned around in their favor, but donghyuck reverts into a sulky demeanor as soon as he's off the rink and into the locker rooms. he notices jeno, being quick and almost feisty with the other boys that are taking too long for his liking in hogging the showers. donghyuck assumes it has something to do with the (gorgeous, wtf) girl that's waiting on him for a date. hardly fair, he thinks, if only he'd met you earlier by chance, he knows he'd definitely have the ability to charm you out of your wits. after all, he's smart, his face is undeniably agreeable, his sense of humor is top notch, and well, what's not to like?
instead of getting closer to you as he so hoped he would, he ends up becoming more familiar with the routine disappointment, and yet delight, at seeing you show up after practices, games, and eventually, team gatherings outside the rink. he's okay with it, he thinks. but it becomes frequent, even, that you show up out of the blue, with the invitation from jeno, and he's starting to lose his cool when it comes to the simplest of interactions. being included in a conversation with you was no problem, as long as he wasn't talking. eye contact? bearable, but not for more than half a second. and the utmost unfortunate luck for the boy if you ever asked him to pass you a fork, or a spoon, or a goddamned napkin.
he's not so sure anymore, one sullen night, that he could ever make you his, even if he was gifted the chance. when you're not by jeno's side, you're by renjun's, and if that isn't telling enough about how uncomfy you feel around everyone else, he wouldn't know any better. but even laying within the deepest, darkest parts of night, the screen on his phone displaying your more recent instagram post of you on jeno's back, a sun setting beach painted behind the two of you, he finds his heart yearning to know more about you. he knows you're not one to reach out, to make friends unless in a situation that calls for it, so he supposes now is as good as a time as any to shoot his shot, at being friends.
he braves himself for this hefty task. his breaths are ragged and his heart is already hammering a deep crater inside his chest at just the thought of following through with his plan. his fingers are shaking and his pupils are twitting at about the same pace and it appears that none of his bodily functions seem to be within his control anymore. but before he can press the button, his door is thunked wide open with a hard force, the handle even going so far as to lodge itself neatly into the wall that's now been broken through. donghyuck's mouth is hanging ajar but he's barely surprised to see that the culprit of such heinous and costly action is jeno. lee jeno.
donghyuck makes swift and subtle actions to shove his phone underneath his pillow but when he takes a good look at the boy's face, he realizes that he didn't need to be so discrete in the first place. jeno's eyes are swollen, and not in the way that suggests he got into a big manly manly fight and came out the victor, but in the way that looks as if his three cats died, all at once, and he'd taken it upon himself to cry for each of their mothers respectively.
the same eyes rove about the room before settling on the bed, his body following suit but moving as if it were part of another entity entirely. the mattress sinks down low with his body weight and he repositions himself so that he's laying down comfortably, his legs still hung over and down the side. donghyuck can hear jeno's ragged breaths, not unlike his own a minute ago, and he wonders what hell of a day the boy had had to render him into this state of numbed consciousness. but before he can even form the question that sits at the edge of his mind, jeno's voice reverberates lowly in the silence of the room.
"she broke up with me," donghyuck blinks purposefully, "something 'bout how she thinks she might like someone else, fucking bastard."
"is she the bastard?" donghyuck tries to disassociate his feelings from his words and come across as...helpful in lifting his friend's mood.
jeno chuckles, "no, hyuck, she's not the bastard. bastard's the guy who has her heart. i'm glad she told me though, she's never been one to hide things."
"yeah, would've been worse if she dragged it on, huh."
"yeah, a lot worse."
donghyuck's voice almost gets caught within the confines of his rationality, "did she tell you who he- the bastard is?" he sighs inwardly, knowing that this was none of his business whatsoever, but the desire to know seeps into his thoughts.
jeno sighs as well, "no, not really. she said it was some boy on the team though, might even be you now that i think about it."
"oh," is, yet again, the only thing he is able to produce.
the new revelations seem to give life to donghyuck. the mere idea that there's a possibility of interest in his direction is something that he thrives off of. mundane tasks like washing the dishes are now enjoyable hobbies, no actual brain work, head empty, thoughts of you exclusively. when it comes to practice, you're no longer there, your presence reduced to hushed talk between the boys and renjun, asking him if you really are the reason jeno's been so out of it, letting easy pucks into the goal left and right. hyuck is relieved, though, that he gets a break, a step back to rethink his crazed emotions. maybe it really was just simple infatuation. maybe it was just because he hadn't gotten laid in awhile. or even just the fact that he's been hanging out with the boys too much and that the first girl he set his eyes on in days ultimately became the protagonist to his daydreams. hell, he is especially glad that you decided it wasn't worth showing your face at the rink for the time being for jeno would've been downright devastated.
that whole paragraph of feelings is bluntly disregarded and thrown off track as he enters the corner cafe a few blocks down from his house and is met with you waving your hand excitedly at him and motioning for him to sit with you. he doesn't hesitate, of course, but makes sure he takes slow and deliberate steps to the window booth you're sitting at just to make sure he at least gets in four deep breaths before he is inevitably subjected to not breathing in your presence.
"hyuck, it's been awhile, i hope this doesn't make you uncomfortable or anything," your face morphs into an expression of realization as it hits you that calling him over was entirely to satisfy your own hopes and dreams. the boy sitting across from you, smiling lightly, might as well be feigning a pleasant disposition, grossed out by the girl that dumped his friend just because she thought she was interested in someone else. by the end of this thought, your voice is reduced to a timid pitch, "you can leave if you want, it's all good."
"actually, i think that it'd be more uncomfortable for you if i left." he feels his heart constrict at the sight and the knowledge that his words enlightened your composure. you take it upon yourself to start some light conversation, not wanting to disclose the reason you'd called him over in the first place just yet. your heart picks up pace, rivaling hyuck's own, and you can't help but think of the sheer likeliness of the luck you'd just encountered. just as you decided to brave up for once and not take advantage of your best friend setting you up on one too many blind dates that were just, too artificial for you, the boy whom you had taken a liking for had shown up before your eyes, breezing through those glass doors as if it were a sign for you to just take charge.
"and i was telling him-"
"are you free friday?"
"what? oh, what?!"
"i'm asking if you're free friday."
"i- i mean yeah, i have practice at three, but i'm free afterwards."
"let's grab dinner together then."
"oh shoot, okay, like with the boys? 'cause i could ask them if they're down."
"no, i was hoping it could be just us. like a date."
"so, hold the fuck up, you're asking me out on a date?"
"yeah, why…? am i not allowed to do that? is going out on a date with me gonna break bro code or something?"
"n- no, nothing like that. it's just...you can't possibly be serious."
"oh, trust me, i'm dead serious."
"...holy shit, i'm in."
donghyuck fucks up big time at practice, his cheeks are way too hot and he's sweating gallons per second. his jaw is clenching and unclenching in hopes that the action might make him a little more attentive while on ice but instead, he finds his eyes roving over to your figure in the stands far more often than he'd like to admit. he thinks, no he hopes, that jeno is okay with the fact that you're not here for him but rather the 'boy on the team' he'd unknowingly referred to a few months back. hyuck knows, though, that renjun is definitely not okay with it, the aforementioned boy throwing just as many glares at hyuck as hyuck's many glances towards you.
practice is over long after he hoped it would be but you're patient and supportive nonetheless. his eyes crinkle and his smile widens as you sidle into him for warmth in the cool air of the ice rink. hyuck solves this by removing the hoodie from his own, accustomed body, and gently tugs it over your shivering one. he thinks he handles the wave of adoration that consumes him pretty well, even able to ease the corners of his lips down a tad bit. "you're cute," you pull at his cheeks and suddenly things are not so easy to handle.
donghyuck does eventually get used to all the sneaky shit you pull just to get his ears red and shy smile blossoming, but he knows he'll never get used to the sight of you in the stands, adorning his spare 66 jersey with everything else fading, and fading further away until it's just you and him, and him and you.
[4:14pm] as tears began to fall down your already delicate face, the faint buzz of your phone startled you. it was hyuck. it read: "we're just about to take off. i know this is hard for us both but i'll be back before you know it, i love you so much. ♡"
