I love being a simpleton. Today I ran out of bed and ran to a window to watch a hail storm happen, and I could not stop giggling.

Winter Precipitation Explained: Snow, Sleet, Freezing Rain & Ice
❄️ Winter Precipitation Explained: A Simple Guide We All Need
Winter weather isn’t just “snow.” Understanding what actually falls from the sky can help us stay safe, prepared, and climate-aware.
Here’s a clear guide to the four main types of winter precipitation ⬇️
🌨️ Snow
Snow forms when temperatures stay below freezing from clouds to ground. It insulates soil, supports ecosystems, and replenishes water supplies—but heavy snowfall can disrupt travel and infrastructure.
Guideline: ✔️ Prepare for reduced visibility ✔️ Protect vulnerable plants and wildlife ✔️ Plan travel carefully during heavy snow
🧊 Sleet
Sleet happens when snow partially melts, then refreezes before reaching the ground. It looks harmless but makes roads extremely slippery.
Guideline: ✔️ Walk and drive with caution ✔️ Expect poor road traction ✔️ Stay updated with weather alerts
🌧️ Freezing Rain
The most dangerous winter precipitation. Rain freezes instantly on contact with cold surfaces, creating invisible ice.
Guideline: ⚠️ Avoid unnecessary travel ⚠️ Watch for power outages ⚠️ Ice can form even with light rain
❄️ Ice Storms
Ice storms occur when freezing rain lasts for hours, coating trees, roads, and power lines.
Guideline: ⚠️ Stay indoors when possible ⚠️ Prepare emergency supplies ⚠️ Check on vulnerable communities
🌡️ Why This Matters More Than Ever
Climate change is altering winter weather patterns: • More winter rain, less snow • Increased freezing rain events • Shorter but more intense winter storms
Understanding these changes helps communities adapt and stay resilient.
🌍 A Reminder
Winter precipitation affects: • Road safety • Public health • Water resources • Ecosystems • Infrastructure
Knowledge is not just awareness—it’s protection.
Nature gives warnings. Understanding them is our responsibility.
🌱 Protecting and restoring Earth starts with awareness.
i don’t ever remember getting hail this frequently. in all 20 years of living in NJ we got it maybe twice and now we get it weekly as a part of rain storms i feel like this is an omen
