So I've been sitting on this idea for a while and I wanted to give it a shot. Hope you all like it. This show defined my childhood and continues to be a big part of me to this day. 🩵
Where I Belong - Part 1
Peace: noun, a strange concept that the world had been striving to achieve for 100 years.
Home: noun, adverb, or adjective, an even stranger notion that you were sure no longer existed for you.
Growing up near Yue Bay in the northern part of the Earth Kingdom had been hard to say the least. The Fire Nation's deadly flame had swept through your home and your village had been destroyed. As a non-bender, you had learned how to heal with the gifts that the Earth provided you.
Life had changed for you in early 100 AG. A band of warriors from the Southern Water Tribe had been ambushed by some Fire Nation soldiers near the Abbey by Yue Bay. After the fighting had ended, you had offered your healing services to the wounded. A decision that had put you in the path of Hakoda.
Hakoda was the Chief of a small tribe located in Wolf Cove and had taken his best warriors on a war campaign after the tribe had been attacked and his wife killed by the Fire Nation. After mixing salves for Bato, his best friend and second-in-command, Hakoda had insisted you join them on their campaign as their healer.
If you could have seen then where you would be almost a year later, you would have told yourself to decline his offer and save yourself the heartache and desperation you were currently dealing with.
The war had taken much from many, but had given you a gift that you had never thought would be for you. You and Hakoda had fallen in love and by the time Avatar Aang had defeated Fire Lord Ozai, the two of you were courting.
Hakoda had been a balm in the chaos of the war. Strong and steady, yet kind and funny. You had fallen quickly and deeply. But all too soon, reality came crashing down for you.
Now you found yourself in Wolf Cove. A speck of green in a sea of blue and utterly useless. Hakoda's daughter, Katara, was a water bender and had the gift of healing. Now when someone was injured, they went to her. You couldn't fault them. She was kind and caring, the last water bender of their nation and a hero to them. She was a wonderful person and the two of you had become friends. But the friendships you had made could not change the fact that you had also lost something precious.
Evenings that were once spent with Hakoda as he drank the tea you brewed to help with the lingering pain of his war wounds had been replaced with him being healed in sessions by Katara. When he wasn't being healed, he was rebuilding the tribe and negotiating alliances with the other nations. The magnetism and connection you had once shared that had held you close in his orbit was waning day by day and you were drifting farther from him What had once been a very close and strong bond was now fraying and you saw only one option. You had to leave. The Southern Water Tribe was not your home. You belonged back in the Earth Kingdom, traveling from village to village and offering your services where needed.
It had taken months of planning and preparation before your opportunity to leave had presented itself. Aang had returned to Wolf Cove to visit with Katara and her brother, Sokka, and help with the rebuilding. Seeing that he was staying put for a while, you had asked Aang to borrow his sky bison, Appa, for a foraging trip. The Avatar was so kind and innocent that he had not seen the lie in your request and had agreed to let you take his dear companion for the journey. You weren't foraging. You were fleeing the only way you could. The only way that you could get away from Hakoda before he could stop you.
Quietly, before the sun pierced the horizon, you gathered your few belongings from your tent and loaded them onto the gentle bison's saddle. After tying down the last sack, your hand came to your throat slowly. One last thing had to be done before you could flee. You had to put the betrothal necklace that Hakoda had made you somewhere that he wouldn't find it for at least several hours.
Gently, you unclasped the blue and green choker and pulled it away from your neck. Turning it over in your hand, your eyes roamed over the silver charm that had been hand carved by Hakoda. The two crescent moons framing the full moon with the symbol of the Earth Kingdom inside it stared back at you. Tears slowly slid down your cheeks as you had recalled Hakoda's face when he had presented it to you. 'A symbol of the two of us, different though we may be, coming together as one' he had said.
Glancing at the sky, you calculated your departure time. You had a few more minutes to leave before someone spotted you leaving or Hakoda himself came across you before Appa took off. With grim determination, you walked back into the tent you had lived in for the last several months and placed the necklace on your pillow beside a bound note. Appa greeted you with a low grumble as he laid down, allowing you to climb onto his neck. Once you were seated, the gentle giant stood and awaited your command.
'Goodbye, Koda. I love you and I'm so sorry."
"Appa, yip yip."
Appa took to the skies at once and soared off in the direction of the Earth Kingdom. You couldn't go to Omashu, Ba Sing Se, Kyoshi Island, or even your old home near Yue Bay now. Aang had friends in all of those cities and if someone came looking for you, they would search there first. No. Your only chance to disappear quietly was to land at Gaoling, send Appa back to Wolf Cove, and flee inward by ostrich horse toward the villages and towns that bordered the Si Wong Desert.
Hours later, Hakoda entered your tent and the sight that greeted him felt like a punch to his gut. Gone were the dried herbs hanging from the rafters, the crackling of the hearth fire that always had a pot of water ready for tea. Gone was the scent of Jasmine and lavender that clung to you. The air was stale and empty. As he looked around in horror, his eyes caught the glint of silver on your pillow.
If the emptiness had been a punch, the sight of your betrothal necklace next to a bound note was certainly a death blow. His knees gave out by your bed and with shaking hands he unrolled the note.
Koda,
By the time you read this, I will be long gone. Things between us haven't been right for a while now and I've finally figured out why. During the war, I had a purpose. To heal and help the wounded. Here, my hands are idle and I am alone. Those precious hours we spent together in the evenings have vanished into the night as though they were simply a dream or a phantom. You are rebuilding an entire people and culture that are not mine. As much as I love you, the ice and the snow cannot be my home. Your people cannot be my people, your ways cannot be my ways. I see now that we are just too different for this to work out. My hands need to be busy, else I sink into the darkness of my memory. You have found your destiny here in Wolf Cove. I have not found mine and I must seek it out. I wish you the best as you rebuild the Southern Water Tribes and take your place as their Chief. There could be no better choice. You will always be a part of me and I will cherish the memories we made together for all the years I have yet to come.
Goodbye, Koda.
The silence and peace of Wolf Cove was shattered with a single, guttural, wounded and heartbroken cry. Sea birds took wing, Arctic camels scattered in their pens. Aang fell off of his air scooter in shock. Sokka and Bato froze with weapons locked mid-swing. In the healing tent, Katara's stream of healing water dropped and soaked her patient as she flinched at the sound. The four of them met each other outside of your tent in haste. Cautiously, Bato pulled the door flap aside and they peered in.
Hakoda knelt in anguish, your betrothal necklace clutched to his heart. His eyes flicked up to his children and his closest friends. Pain, fear, anger and resolution burned in his sapphire eyes. Sokka, Katara and Aang shared confused and worried looks. Hakoda's eyes met Bato's steady gaze and his friend stiffened, awaiting the command he was sure was coming.
Today had been another day in the Southern water tribe, as you had left the home you shared with your brother, Bato. Going out in search of him, hoping to catch him before he leaves, on his fishing trip. Hoping to ask him to catch a salmon for dinner tonight. As you walked through the village, you soon saw him standing alone, with Hakoda, your boyfriend, and some other southern water tribe men.
Y/n " Good, they haven't left yet, they seem to be talking about who will be fishing or hunting today." You had seen Hakoda standing in the front as all the others gathered around him. They seem to be speaking about something important, as they all didn't notice you getting closer to the group.
Y/n " Hello, everyone." The group looked at you in fear and panic as your bato went towards you.
Y/n " Are you all okay?"
Bato " Sister, so good to see you."
Y/n " Oh yes, I was wondering if you could catch a salmon for our dinner tonight, and maybe the rest of the village as well. I spoken with some of the women of the tribe who are planing cook dishes that fish in mind tonight."
Bato " Oh yes, we can do for you and the village."
Y/n " Thank you."
Hakoda " Good morning, y/n."
Y/n " Good morning, Hakoda."
Baton, " I will split up the group like you said, Hakoda. I shall wait for you by the canoe. See you later today, sister."
Y/n " Be safe out there, all of you, please." Hakoda and the other man soon left quickly, leaving you and Hakoda to have some time together, but you could tell something was the matter with Hakoda.
Y/n " Hakoda, is everything okay?"
Hakoda " Oh yes, everything is fine, sweetheart. Why do you ask?"
Y/n " When I came over, you and my brother, along with anyone else, started to panic, and now you looked scared."
Hakoda " No, everything is fine, just doing my best, with all my responsibilities to my family and the tribe."
Y/n " Hakoda, you don't have to handle everything alone, you have me, along with Bato and your mother, even Kya as well. You have many people who love and care about you who wish to help you."
Hakoda, " I know my love speaking to you has brought me peace right now, but I have to get going now, we have no fishing to do."
Y/n " Okay, and please, for the spirit's sake, don't get into any trouble with my brother. That ends up with either one of you hurt, because I will not let either one of you hear the end of it."
Hakoda " I promise." Hakoda soon kissed you goodbye, then turned and left, leaving you standing there watching him and Bato leave in their canoe. You soon walked away from where your love and brother had left you as you headed towards Kanna's home.
Kanna " Y/n, you have come. It's good to see you."
Kya " Y/n, you have made it."
Y/n " Well, I'm one of the tribe healers alongside you and Kanna."
Kanna, " Were you able to see my son off before he left for fishing?"
Y/n " Yes, we had talked to him and my brother, along with some of the other men. I think I had interrupted a conversation they were having. As they all started panicking and acting worried."
Kya " Please don't let it be a prank."
Y/n " knowing them both, they might be up to something, but they will tell us when they are ready."
Kanna " You know you and my son have been seeing each other for a while now, are there plans for a wedding?" You nearly dropped the jar you were holding, as all eyes were on you now.
Y/n "Wedding."
Kya " Oh come on, don't act like you don't know that the tribe has been talking about you and Hakoda finally getting married."
Y/n " Well, he hasn't asked yet, and I don't want to push him to ask me to marry him."
Kya " Hakoda will be a fool if he doesn't give you a betrothal necklace and ask you to marry him."
Y/n " What if he finds someone else or...."
Kanna " My son is in love with you y/n he never stops talking about you, which I enjoy, as it makes him happy. I would love to have you as a daughter-in-law."
Y/n " Thank you, Kanna." You had spent most of the day with Kanna and Kya, helping them and anyone who needed healing or medical care. Later that night, you had made your way home, as you saw smoke coming up from the chimney of the home.
Hakoda "Y/n."
Y/n " Hakoda."
Hakoda, " I was hoping I could borrow some of your time."
Y/n " Sure, you can come inside..."
Hakoda " No, I wish to talk with you somewhere else, don't worry, I have told Bato about it."
Y/n " Okay."
Hakoda: "Follow me, we will take the canoe." You had followed Hakoda to his canoe, and he helped you in as the two of you took off heading towards the spot Hakoda wanted to show you. Hakoda soon stopped the canoe and helped you out of it. He soon grabbed your hand and walked toward the area.
Y/n " Hakoda."
Hakoda " Okay, there is something I need to tell you."
Y/n " ....."
Hakoda " Since the day we were young, we had always been by each other's side, and now we have been seeing each other. I wish to spend the rest of my life with you, y/n. So I have asked my mother for her betrothal necklace, and she said yes. So y/n do the honor and accept this necklace and become my wife." Hakoda looked at you, waiting for an answer from you.
Y/n " Yes, definitely yes." You hugged Hakoda, tracking the poor man into the snowing ground. The pair soon looked at each other and started laughing.
Hakoda: " Then you shall be my wife."
Y/n "Yes, and you shall be my husband." You had smiled at Hakoda, had placed the necklace around your neck. As the pair looked at each other happily in love, it would take until the afternoon for the whole clan to learn of the newest betrothal that they will be celebrating in a couple of months under a full moon.
So, I have some story ideas and I would like to know what you think:
1. Hakoda x reader, where the reader is a very powerful pirate who was captured by the Fire Nation navy. Hakoda and his crew saved the reader. Hakoda became very attached to the reader and didn't want to lose her like he lost Kya. (Done)
2. Ozai x Zuko (platonic). Ozai receives the news of his son's assassination from none other than Zhao. He doesn't know why, but he can't accept that his son is dead, and when he finds out that Zuko is alive, he vows to make things right with Zuko. (Done)
requested by anon “I love your Hakoda x reader gaining Katara’s trust, could you do more of this ship? Maybe reader is bonding with Sokka, Bato, and the rest of Hakoda’s crew and just showing that she can keep up with the guys? Thank you! Your writing is incredible!!”
summary when you, a northern water tribe peacemaker, is sent to help his fleet, hakoda is worried that the men won’t respect you since you’re a woman. you prove him wrong quickly.
a/n catch that REFERENCE at the end my guys
gif cred belongs to @avatarparallels
when you and hakoda first met, he was a little scared for you. you had introduced yourself as a northern water tribe peacemaker, there to help the remnants of the southern water tribes with supplies and guides through the nations.
you held yourself with confidence and nothing but sureness as you spoke to his fleet. your words were honest and comforting, and he could tell that his men were listening intently. but you were a woman. the only one they had ever seen in a leadership position amongst water tribes.
hakoda was terrified for you. but he was soon shown that there was no reason for him to be.
hakoda had been leading you around their camp, showing you the behind the scenes of their planning. you two had been walking peacefully when you noticed bato presenting a map to a few men. you approached slowly.
bato paused when he noticed your presence amongst his small crowd. you held up a peaceful hand. “please, don’t mind me. continue.” bato gave you a nod before continuing.
when he had finished his presentation and the men had dispersed, bato approached you and asked, “what did you think of the plan?”
“very well written,” you nodded. “however.. may i?” you gestured toward the chalk he had been using to lightly draw over the map.
“please,” he nodded politely, stepping out of the way. you stepped forward and began to mark.
“you are very clever to leave one boat hanging behind,” you acknowledged, “in situations of retreat, it’s essential. even more so in terms of back up. that’s why i think there should be two boats trailing.” bato leaned closer as you explained, “that way, in case of retreat, one can sail away quickly to try to preserve men and materials, while the other can hang behind to gather survivors from knock-offs and whatnot. also..”
hakoda smiled as other men began to gather, all listening as you perfected the fleet’s next invasion plan. he started feeling a little embarrassed for worrying about you before.
when sokka finally arrived, hakoda’s heart was nearly full. but for another moment, remembering young sokka’s habits, he worried that he may disrespect your presence once you’re introduced.
“hakoda,” you called when you noticed him and sokka walking around camp. “i see you’ve picked up a new warrior.”
“chief y/n, this is my son, sokka,” hakoda introduced. sokka bowed his head.
“it’s great to see you again, chief,” sokka greeted.
“and you, as well, warrior,” you chuckled, tipping your head slightly to the southern boy.
“you two know each other?” hakoda scoffed in delighted surprise.
“why, of course,” you grinned. “your son was one of the foremost runners in the battle against the fire nation in the north. if it weren’t for him and his friends, the north never would have survived.” sokka took in your compliments with beaming, smug pride. “not to mention he inspired the north to send me down to aid your cause. warrior sokka is a young inspiration.” you nudged hakoda with your elbow. “i wouldn’t be here without your son. in more ways than one.”
hakoda swelled with pride in that moment.
two weeks later, hakoda grinned at you as you entered his tent. but your expression was far from delight. “what’s wrong?” he immediately asked, standing and crossing the way to lay a comforting hand on your arm.
“i just received word that i am needed back in the north,” you explained, as professionally and strongly as you could, but hakoda could hear the sigh laced in your words. you presented a scroll to him, which he immediately snatched and inspected.
with his hand still on your arm, hakoda looked up to you. “im sorry to hear that.”
you nodded solemnly. “they sent their ship two weeks ago. it is only a matter of days until they get here.”
once you two had sat yourselves across from each other, you explained, “i apologize for my solemnity. it is just... this place grew on me. these warriors, these battles.. their outstanding leader.” hakoda offered you a flattered smile. “i am genuinely going to miss my time here.”
hakoda reached across to take your hand. “and we’ll miss you just as much.” you gave him a gentle smile. “know that you’re always welcome in the south, y/n.”
“thank you, hakoda,” you spoke genuinely, squeezing his hand. but before anything else could be done, the tent flap ripped open to reveal bato.
“sorry to interrupt, chiefs,” the warrior spoke, eyeing your hands as they slid away from each other’s, “but we’re about to go over strategy, if you would like to sit in.” you both stood.
“of course, warrior.”
it was two days later when your ship arrived. you gave a farewell speech to warriors you had spent your previous few months with, thanking them for welcoming you and inspiring them to carry on with their excellent work. hakoda helped you load your things onto the ship.
“all set?” hakoda asked after you had walked him back to the land.
“should be,” you nodded. “thank you again, for the wonderful experience, hakoda.”
“my pleasure,” he smiled. “can i tell you one last secret?”
you arched an eyebrow. “do tell.”
“when you first arrived, i was worried my men wouldn’t respect you,” he admitted. “the south had never had a woman chief, and i wasn’t sure how they would react. but im glad they accepted you, and.. im embarrassed for being worried.”
“don’t be,” you smiled, shaking your head at him. “i know it’s a newer concept, but im glad to see it’s becoming easier to accept. your men see me as a chief, but im a woman, too.” you leaned forward and planted a kiss on hakoda’s cheek, catching the chief off guard. you gave him a kind smile. “good bye, hakoda.”
he watched you walk away sadly, feeling like a teenager on the inside.
Could you write a cute Hakoda x Reader oneshot, where Reader has a snowball fight with her boyfriend (Hakoda) and he proposes to her?
a/n: I think this is probably the last Hakoda request I’ll do for now just bc I’m not comfortable writing with the character yet but anyway I hope you enjoy!
“Incoming!” You shout before chucking your perfectly made snowball straight towards Hakoda. A giggle escapes you as it hits him square in the face before slowly sliding down his features and plopping back onto the ground beneath him. A mischievous smile slowly curls upon his lips before he immediately scoops up a mound of snow and chases after you.
Bounding through the snow your boyfriend chases after you, light laughter leaving him as he throws his poorly made snowball towards you. It hits the back of your coat and sends you stumbling in the snow, but you quickly regain your balance. However, Hakoda is easily able to catch up to you and skillfully snatches you by the waist before bringing you closer into his chest.
“You just love to cause trouble, don’t you?” He laughs teasingly, grinning at the sound of your delighted squeals as he spins you in the air before setting you back down.
“Always,” you smile breathlessly before leaning up and pressing a chaste kiss to his lips.
“How I love you so,” he sighs happily, gently resting a hand upon your cheek. You easily melt into his touch, your eyes sparkling as you gaze up at him adoringly. You’ve never really been in love before, but you know you have the real thing with Hakoda. You’ve been together ever since you were children, laughing and playing in the snow much like you are now. There’s never been anyone else, and you don’t think there ever will be. Not when you’re so in love.
“Even despite my childish games?” You tease.
“Of course.”
His grin morphs into a small smile as he guides you to sit down in the snow beside him, and though curious as to the sudden change in his demeanor you follow suit.
“Is everything alright? I thought we were having fun.”
“We are,” he reassures you, “but I’d also like to show you something. I need you to close your eyes.”
“Is it a surprise? Oh, I love surprises!” You exclaim eagerly as you shut your eyes. Hakoda is silent but you can feel his movement beside you, and soon a cool material rests it itself upon your neck. Slowly you peel your eyes open and look down with a gasp.
“Hakoda...”
“It was my mother’s necklace,” he explains with a sheepish smile, “and I’d like it to be yours. That is, if you’ll have me.”
The stone is beautifully and delicately carved, and the weight of its meaning is not lost upon you. Hakoda has gifted you a betrothal necklace, and in turn has asked you to be his wife.
“Yes! Oh, yes! Of course I’ll have you!” You cry happily before tackling him in the snow. Your giddy laughter echoes through the village as the two of you rejoice in your engagement.
You’re going to be married to the man you love and nothing could be more perfect.
