wada sez: With this strip, Bove sought to rehabilitate the character of Rodimus Prime. As he explained to various users on deviantART: “Rodimus was always going to be crap compared to Optimus because he had too much to live up to and if Optimus couldn't end the war, how much would you hate to be in charge of what's left? I wanted Rodimus to be less self pitying though still put upon. [...] I wanted to remind everyone that the guy had that potential, even if he wasn't utilised much in teh [sic] cartoon. [...] it was an aspect of Rodimus that got completely lost very early on in the cartoon, his impulsiveness and a "can do" approach. [...] That was our plan when doing this, because in the Movie you kind of think that Rodimus would be awesome and then he just whines all the time in the series! We wanted him to be a leader of a lost cause rather than a lost leader if that makes sense...” Rodimus’ observation here that he and his friends are all doomed, as even the mighty Optimus was eventually killed in battle, is basically the complete opposite of what he consistently expresses throughout the whole movie, where he’s basically an embodiment of the hope the next generation should have in the future—in the film, it’s Galvatron who says, “We all must die, sometime!”, and Hot Rod who rebukes him, “Not today, Galvatron!” But all that said, Bove is right that Rodimus Prime as seen in the cartoon’s third season is a much more cynical and put-upon character, and the decision to revive Optimus Prime by its end has always cast a shadow on Rodimus Prime in retrospect.
