Understanding the Halal Diet
What is a halal diet?
A halal diet is avoiding food that is not permissable according to the Qur'an such as pork, or anything that contains alcohol etc. Also, the animals have to be slaughtered in a certain way so that they feel as little pain as possible, and they have to be slaughtered in the name of Allah (God). Islam places great emphasis in the way in which an animal’s life ends, which has to be in accordance with Islamic regulations. Since we view life of any living being as a sacred blessing of Allah, animals' life have to be respected as well. That's why when slaughtering animals (which should ideally only be done for the purpose of consuming them) the animal must not see other animals being killed, must not see how the knife which will be used for its slaughter is sharpened, must not be in an uncomfortable position, and must bleed out completely before any further proceedings (and more). Some experts say that the animal killed in this way does not suffer if the cut is made quickly and cleanly, because it loses consciousness before the brain can perceive any pain: “the Islamic way of slaughtering is the most humane method of slaughter and that captive bolt stunning, practiced in the West, causes 3 severe pain to the animal” (Schulze W, Schultze-Petzold H). So basically even though chicken meat is permissable to eat for a Muslim, if it is not slaughtered in an Islamic way it is not considered halal and hence not allowed to be consumed.
