#halfa headcanons

I've had this thought for a bit but haven't quite known how to put it into words, so you're just getting it in nonsensical stream of conciousness fashion I guess, as is tradition. Now let's talk halfas.

I know there are various degrees of "they're not quite human, even in human form" ideas floating around out there, and that stuff is my JAM. Give me a chill in the air when they walk into the room, give me that uncanny valley feeling when they're looking directly at you, give me the eyes that reflect light like a cat's, give me electronics fritzing in their vicinity, give me silent footsteps. I am here for all of it. But I also really love the idea that there's a level of a) how much they embrace the ghost half that factors in, and b) not just gaining ghostly traits, but losing human ones too. Hear me out. A) Vlad is significantly more ghostly than Danny, particularly in his ghost form, right? Blue skin, red eyes, claws, fangs. Like, he's not winning any prizes for subtley, that's all I'm saying. And there are various rationales for this out there too, but for the sake of argument, let's just say it's because he's less resitant to the idea of being a ghost and fights the ghost side of him less. In that case, I love the idea of Vlad being more ghostly just in general. He's not actively suppressing his ghost half, and this bleeds through into his human form, giving him a much creepier vibe than Danny. You maybe couldn't quite put your finger on it, but he's unsettling in a way this fourteen year old dork who's been rambling for 20 minutes about black holes and spagehttification (yes, it's a thing) just isn't. I also am simply trash for giving Vlad sharper teeth, dark circles, eyes that lack that more human warmth, blah, blah, blah, to drive some of that home. None of it is strictly inhuman, but you're definitely getting the impression there's something...wrong with him, where Danny comes across more like your average, definitely-totally-human kid.

B) I looooove the thought that the more ghostly the halfas let themselves become, the more they start losing some of the things that make them human. They need less sleep, they lose their appetite, they have less body heat, their pulse is slower. Maybe some of that human conscience goes silent and those nefarious ghost tendencies start coming out (like, say, a craving for power???) I love this thought so much because this makes the slope even more slippery between Danny (the hero) and Vlad (the villain), which is a *chef's kiss* dynamic. If Danny starts letting some things slide, letting himself lose his humanity just a little bit, embracing his ghostliness to the exlcusion of his human half, giving up some conscience for some power, maybe these other, dormant ghost tendencies could wake up. I mean, we know that stuff is in there, we see it in Dan, there's the implication that the ghost without the human is dangerous, but the thought that you could let one side start to override the other, even while still being a halfa? AND, maybe that's part of the reason Vlad is so cracked? Makes my single braincell feral.

Idk, just some half-baked thoughts because I am procrastinating what I'm supposed to be doing right now. Sorry or you're welcome accordingly LOL.

oh my god new headcanon. unsure if anyone else has posted this, but i know there are similar ideas out there

so, hear me out

ghosts need ectoplasm to survive. they feed off it, almost similar to the way humans need oxygen to breathe (except ghosts can absorb through the skin, etc)

ectoplasm, ectoplasmic particles, and the works, exist almost everywhere on earth. ectoplasm comes from the Ghost Zone. death usually thins the Veil between the living and dead, and ectoplasm levels spike with lots of death, which is why it feels cold and eerie in the places people die - it's the lasting effects of the Veil and Ghost Zone

it is only in high concentration that ectoplasm appears green and glowing - and Amity has one of the highest concentrations of ectoplasm on earth (not from death, but rather the natural portals and naturally thin Veil in the town. though it would be fun to headcanon that Amity was a slaughter site in history during a war or something). otherwise, it's almost impossible to get ecto samples because the amount of ectoplasm in the air and earth is almost non existent

ghosts need ectoplasm to continue "living." ghosts can form in the Ghost Zone from sentient ectoplasm or form from the partnering of two ghosts. they can also come from spirits who died in the living world. but they cannot stay in the living world because otherwise they would suffer and fade without the necessary ectoplasm. spirits who are trapped in the living world and can't break the Veil to get to the Ghost Zone are usually stuck where they died, weak and fading because they have limited access to ectoplasm (these are the ghosts that can only rattle windows, close doors, cause winds, etc). but if they do have access to an ectoplasm source? a natural portal?? great. they can stay in the living world as long as they want (which is why Amity is so full of powerful and corporeal ghosts)

but what if halfas generated ectoplasm??

ghosts consume ectoplasm, and halfas generate ectoplasm. this is why you will find high levels of ghostly activity where halfas live, because ghosts are naturally drawn to the source of ectoplasm

and for Danny, who died when a literal portal to the Ghost Zone - when the literal Veil - opened up inside of him, it means he generates that much more ectoplasm

How I Think Ghost Babies are Made:

I like to imagine it to be more of a arcane-style ritual where they pour a ton of their ecto energy into the creation of their offspring. If they don't have enough energy to pull it off they'll fade, so the process of making a child is not undertaken lightly. I don't think they should have much influence on how the kid(s) come out.

This ritual can be done by an individual up to like a dozen separate entities. The more participating the less energy needed to be put into it by each individual, so the more ghosts involved the safer.

There are a lot of variables involved in the process, so there's no way to predict what the kid(s) will be like besides the fact they will resemble their parent(s) in form and appearance, as well as core type. Creating more than one kid during the rite is rare, but not unheard of. Children will usually resemble what a newborn of the parents' original species, upon completion of the ritual.

This process is exhausting for all parties. So most wanting their own spawn will pick a safe location to do this rite in, such as one of the parents' lairs.

Magic practicing living beings can participate as well, substituting ecto energy for raw magic. The caster in question would need to have very large magic reserves, or have a way to store enough magic and access it during the ritual. Either way, the child will be a full ghost.

Though one could use a altered fertility spell combined with the ritual to make a first generation born halfa.

Theoretically a sufficiently powerful preexisting (born) halfa could infuse their ecto energy into their egg/sperm cell(s) during intercourse. A resulting embryo would develop into a quarter-ghost/living being hybrid, if it manages to survive the pregnacy. (Whether or not a created halfa could do the same depends on how functioning you headcanon their reproductive cells and/or organs to be.)
