Okay. So. Ghost babies. How do they get made? I like the idea that ghost babies start out as blobs. Just a blob of ectoplasm wrapped around a tiny not fully developed core. The idea that they are rare because the process of having babies is potentially fatal also makes sense to me, however I don’t want the idea of ghost ‘bleeds’ enough ectoplasm for the shed ectoplasm to become a baby. If they started out in a ‘womb’ similar to a human baby until their core was developed enough to be capable of living outside of the parent’s body, and it was potentially fatal because the parent would be instinctively constantly feeding their unborn children their ectoplasm for their cores, and later their bodies, to develop or something. But how does the conception work? Do ghosts procreate like most creatures with sex? Do they consciously decide to try making a baby and they mix ectoplasm to do so? Do they plant a seed and feed it their ectoplasm like plant babies? Do they even need a partner to have babies? Does it have to be a conscious decision or can it be done accidentally? How does it happen, please tell me!

Dan glared from his spot in the rafters, watching closely. Clockwork stood in front of his screens, a soft smile on his face, completely ignoring the angry ghost in favor of the far more cheerful one that was zipping around.

The little ghost had a body now, or at least the start of one. There was the sense that something was there, more energy than mass, with the faintest of an outline. Their core was still very visible, shimmering with the same purple and blue as the wide, round eyes that sat right where their head would be but is not quite.

They’ve only been there a few days. At least, that’s what Dan guessed. Time didn’t really work the same in this place. It was quite the change for such a short time.

They had only developed the eyes a few hours ago, he’d guess. They had spent most of that, uncomfortably enough, staring at him. Those big eyes wouldn’t leave his face, the tiny pinpricks of not-yet-there hands patting at his cheeks. He didn’t like that at all, but luckily it appeared they had moved on. Now they were exploring all the nooks and crannies of the viewing room. They had been sure to give Clockwork a nice long stare, too, though not nearly as long as the one they gave him. At least it wasn’t just him, though Clockwork seemed to take it better. At the very least he didn’t show any sign of being uncomfortable.

Suddenly, they stopped their frantic flying about, eyes trained on something. Dan followed their line of sight towards a window.

He felt a flare of panic before he managed to force it down. There was no way they’d just run off like that, he was sure. He could feel their curiosity, just as strong as always, but there was just enough caution to prevent a stupid action like that. They did, of course, fly over to the window and look out at the world beyond.

They had, of course, never seen the world outside before. They were easily mesmerized by the swirling layers of green that was the ghost zone and finally sat still for a while to watch.

“They’re going to be a handful.” Clockwork said into the silence. “When they grow older.”

Dan narrowed his eyes at the ghost, unsure how exactly he was supposed to respond to the random comment. He settled for a grunt of acknowledgement, going back to watching the little ghost at the window. It looks like she spotted something in the distance, something that made her even more cautious with a tinge of fear. She didn’t like what she saw at all.

She let out a disgruntled humm from her core, flying over to Dan, looking for comfort.

He rolled his eyes but didn’t stop them from landing on his shoulder, the not-quite-there body leaving prickles where they touched even through his suit. They nuzzled their head against his cheek, curling up close to him. He could feel his core thrumming comfortingly, echoed by their own thrumming. It didn’t take long to calm her down, though she wasn’t that upset to begin with.

He pretended not to feel Clockwork’s eyes on him, didn’t want to see whatever stupid smug smile was on his face.

It was only a moment later that the little ghost was moving again, though they didn’t return to the window. They took to looking over the various gears that were floating around the viewing windows and Clockwork. He caught himself smiling at them and frowned.

He supposed there really was no escaping this. But…

“Hey, Clockwork.”

The old man turned to him, head tilted to the side, waiting. At least he didn’t have that stupid smug smile on his face or something. He hesitated but managed to force himself to continue.

“Be honest with me for a second here. How … badly do I mess this up?”

Clockwork had a knowing glint in his eyes. The screen turned to static when he looked away, looking up to where Dan sat instead. Not that Dan noticed. His eyes were still trained on the little ghost as it danced around the gear, following it’s circling motion with a happy little chime.

“You’re assuming you will be a bad father?”

Dan shrugged. Like he would admit anything. He just wanted the answer.

“There are, of course, countless timelines from this point, endless possibilities. If you had asked yesterday when they first showed up I would have told you that you failed in three fourths of those futures. You never accepted them as yours and they faded or were killed.”

Dan closed his eyes, unable to stop the frown as much as he tried to keep a perfectly blank.

“But you did accept them and have done an excellent job caring for them so far. Things will naturally get harder and you will make mistakes, but so does every parent. Regardless of those mistakes, they will always love you. The only true way to fail them would be if you suddenly stopped caring for them. The chances of that happening are …” He had to pause to think about it. “About 1 in 12,976.”

Dan was silent, thinking.

He could feel concern that wasn’t his blooming in his chest. The little ghost flew over to him, nuzzling into his cheek again, this time trying to offer him comfort. He snickered at them, hand hovering over them.

“Right.”

Clockwork nodded, turning back to his screen. Everything went silent for several long moments.

“Thanks.”

Clockwork smiled.

How I Think Ghost Babies are Made:

I like to imagine it to be more of a arcane-style ritual where they pour a ton of their ecto energy into the creation of their offspring. If they don't have enough energy to pull it off they'll fade, so the process of making a child is not undertaken lightly. I don't think they should have much influence on how the kid(s) come out.

This ritual can be done by an individual up to like a dozen separate entities. The more participating the less energy needed to be put into it by each individual, so the more ghosts involved the safer.

There are a lot of variables involved in the process, so there's no way to predict what the kid(s) will be like besides the fact they will resemble their parent(s) in form and appearance, as well as core type. Creating more than one kid during the rite is rare, but not unheard of. Children will usually resemble what a newborn of the parents' original species, upon completion of the ritual.

This process is exhausting for all parties. So most wanting their own spawn will pick a safe location to do this rite in, such as one of the parents' lairs.

Magic practicing living beings can participate as well, substituting ecto energy for raw magic. The caster in question would need to have very large magic reserves, or have a way to store enough magic and access it during the ritual. Either way, the child will be a full ghost.

Though one could use a altered fertility spell combined with the ritual to make a first generation born halfa.

Theoretically a sufficiently powerful preexisting (born) halfa could infuse their ecto energy into their egg/sperm cell(s) during intercourse. A resulting embryo would develop into a quarter-ghost/living being hybrid, if it manages to survive the pregnacy. (Whether or not a created halfa could do the same depends on how functioning you headcanon their reproductive cells and/or organs to be.)
