Today was a tough one for me. I have been getting over a cold/allergies(no clue what it was but it is finally slowly going away). Because of this illness it has been difficult to catch my breath with minimal excursion. Since I have been feeling a bit better I decided to give the race a try and go slow. Today was not my day nor was this the race for me. The first 1.5 miles was straight uphill, which gave my lungs the hardest workout and i could barely breathe on any straightaway afterwards. I found myself walking to catch my breath and once caught there was another uphill. By mile 3 I was so exhausted and still had 10 miles to go. At this point I was last and the sweeper decided she wanted to try to run me over with her bike(not on purpose) because apparently I was going too slow for her bike to go..... Then as I got to the city, all turns had pink tape in directional arrows on the ground, except 2.(I found out later other runners got lost later in the course for the same reson) Both of these had volunteers as the traffic directors but I guess since most of the runners had past they didn't feel the need to assist me(one had left and the other was sitting in his car). :-( Due to this I kept going straight into the city instead of turning by the river.(Happened again 2 turns later) At this point physically my body was done and mentally I was done because I didn't feel safe out on the course with the bike lady and the lack of directionals on some of the turns. I hate giving up, haven't done it in a race in many years, but by mile 3.5 I was done. The mirage of a waterstop was the perfect place for me to chug a Gatorade and tap out.
