Bite Me
It was cool, the weather typical of October in Seattle. The mist was rolling off the water in waves, mimicking the veil that was so often talked about during the Halloween season; the veil that was thinnest on all hallows eve allowing the spirits to walk among the living. The afterlife would come to life in the form of costumes and masks, while the local neighborhood kids would run from house to house in search of candy and treats while the older ones would wander around in search of tricks. Goblins and zombies roamed the streets with their mothers not far behind to make sure they were home by bedtime, when they would transform back into their regular selves.
Halloween had descended on Walla Walla, and while Valencia was content to hand out candy from the front porch, Everett had taken to handing out tricks to the older kids, or so he said. He was currently under the hood of his car, grease from the engine had made its way to his shirt, and Val knew she’d be pushing him into the shower once they were back in the house in order to avoid their sheets smelling like motor oil. But, this was the only way he would keep her company while she handed out candy, and she had learned at a young age not to look a gift horse in the mouth.
“How much is left in that bowl?” standing, he wiped his hands on the towel that had been hanging from his back pocket, coming to join her on the steps.
“I just gave you a bag of m&ms, Everett, come on!”
“Oh, there’s so much!” peering over where she had angled the plastic bowl away from him, he reached under her arms that were attempting to cover the top, and pulled out a fun sized snickers bar.
“You keep eating all the candy and I won’t have any to give to the kids.”
“There’s plenty for the kids,” he gestured with a sweep of his arm to the two elementary school aged kids running up the driveway. They came skidding to a stop when they saw her sitting there with the bowl. “Especially our favorites.”
Billy and Sammy, two neighborhood best friends who had become enamored with Everett as soon as they were old enough to race down the street on their own. Their dad’s were both serving in the Army and on deployment, so he had taken to letting them hang out while he puttered around with his car, the two kids absolutely wide eyed at the chic black muscle car that sat on display in the driveway and even more so when he’d toss them in the back seat and take them for a drive around the block with him and Val.
“TRICK OR TREAT!” they yelled, grinning from ear to ear.
“Billy? Sammy? I hardly recognized you!’ Val grinned, standing and coming over to inspect their costumes. Everett was hot on her heels, arms folded over his chest as he appraised the two boys, a proud smile on his face.
“Gentlemen,” Everett grinned. “How’s things at Stark Industries?”
“Hi Val!” Sammy beamed up at her, his small crush on the woman not going unnoticed by her as his cheeks turned as red as the stripes on his Captain America costume. His best friend, Billy, was dressed as a very convincing Iron Man. “What are you supposed to be?”
“I’m a cat,” she grinned, pointing up to the black cat ears that were nestled snugly into her hair, before turning to show off the tail she had pinned to the back of her jeans, the top of the tail hidden by the bottom of Everett’s hoodie she had confiscated earlier. “See?”
“Cat’s can’t talk…” Billy guwaffed, turning to her with his hands on his hips.
“Anything’s possible on Halloween pal!”
“Yeah, haven’t you two seen Hocus Pocus?” Val laughed, crouching down with the candy bowl, ready to offer her two favorite kiddos the lot of it if they wanted.
“Oh, right! Binx!”
“See? Cat’s can talk but only on Halloween.”
Just as she was about to tell them to take what they wanted from the bowl, their mothers appeared at the end of the drive, calling out and reminding them not to be too greedy and only take one piece.
“Take two,” Val winked, giving their mom’s a wave. “They’ll never know.”
“Thanks!”
Their small hands dug into the bowl as they searched for their favorites, cries of hey that was mine! and give it back! coming from the two until finally their mothers had abandoned their post and came to retrieve their children, apologetic smiles on their faces as they neared.
“Sorry, Valencia,” Sammy’s mother shook her head, and Val couldn't help but chuckle, as if this was the biggest problem in all of Walla Walla. “You and Everett are very good to him, but he shouldn’t be getting greedy.”
“He can have as much as he likes,” the younger woman smiled. “Both of them can. Don’t tell the other kids but, your boys are our favorites.”
“Oh, they know it,” Billy’s mother laughed, watching as her son came back with two handfuls of candy for his bucket. “Are we ready to move on?”
“I guess so…” Billy sighed, turning back towards the couple.
“Hey, we’re not going anywhere, why don’t you come by on Saturday and you can help me and Val take some of the decorations down.”
“Does that mean it’s time for Val to put up her, what did you call it Ev, shit load-”
“Woah, hey now!” he laughed, putting a hand over Billy’s mouth and crouching down. “It means it’s almost time for Christmas. That’s what that means.”
“Okay, you two, Valencia and Everett have more trick or treaters to give candy to, so say bye, and you’ll see them later.”
The boys waved as they ran down the driveway, a group of older middle school kids passing them by and coming to a stop in front of Val, who was still holding the bow of candy. One of the kids stepped forward without so much as a hello or a trick or treat and dug his hand into the bowl, pulling a handful out. More than she would have given to anyone who wasn’t Billy and Sammy.
“C’mon, you guys can’t be too old to say trick or treat.” she teased.
“Sure lady, whatever.” Grump one was wearing an Undertaker t-shirt, jeans and converse sneakers.
“No costumes either?” She tried again to invoke some kind of Halloween spirit with them, noting they couldn’t have been much older than thirteen or fourteen.
“Costumes are for babies.” This one was wearing a band t-shirt that looked too old to be his, and probably belonged to his dad.
“Well, then trick or treating must also be for babies.” Everett pulled the bowl from Val’s hands and back from the second kid, who had now thrown at least six of the Reese's pumpkins into his pillow case sack.
“Hey!”
“I think you two have taken your fair share,” his hazel eyes were dark, and Val knew if she didn’t put a stop to what was brewing between Everett and the boys, there would be a lot of explaining to do to some angry parents. “Go on, there’s more kids behind you.”
The boys pushed past a group of little girls, the force knocking over the one dressed like Dorothy; her basket and stuffed dog falling to the ground with her.
“Oh no…” she rushed towards the girl, recognizing her as Lillian from down the street. “Everett, take care of the others, okay?”
“I want to take care of those brats.” He grumbled, but plastered on a smile for the other kids anyway.
“Hey Lillian, you’re okay,” Val scooped her up quickly, checking to see if she had gotten hurt, when she noticed a scowl on her face. “Are you okay kiddo?”
“He got my dress dirty!” She exclaimed, frown on her face as she looked back at the boys now running down the street.
“I know, boys are so mean.” Val chuckled, putting her back on the ground and picking up the basket and stuffed animal.
“Mister Evvy isn’t mean.”
“No, he’s not mean,” Val smiled. “Come on, looks like he’s got some candy for you.”
“Got’s any eninems?”
“I got as many m&m’s as you want kiddo.” Ev crouched down to meet her height, and held the bowl out for her. His eyes now softer, the anger having dissipated.
“You didn’t eat um all like last time?”
“Why does everyone assume I eat all the m&m’s?”
“Cause you do, honey.”
Once Lillian had her fill of candy, Val walked her back down the driveway to her mom, who looked for all the world grateful that she didn’t have to intervene with the nasty boys, or fix up an injured child on Halloween. After saying goodbye, she rejoined Ev on the porch steps, the bowl of candy now almost empty and sitting between them.
“You about ready to call it a night, Mister Evvy?” She teased, bumping her shoulder against his.
“After all that, yea,” he groaned. “Why can’t all the kids be like Billy and Sammy?”
“Because then you’d have the whole neighborhood snapping at your heels for a ride in the car.”
“Maybe little Lillian, but that’s it.”
“No, but really, are you okay?”
“Yea, I’m fine,” he sighed, taking her hand in his and giving it a gentle squeeze. “Almost wasn’t but…”
“But?”
“I like it here so, no slip ups.”
“It wouldn’t have been so bad, not today at least.”
“Yea but, it’s not something I’m trying to let happen either.”
“They’d have assumed it was some cool Halloween party trick,” she grinned, dropping her head to his shoulder. “Most kids that age do. The internet is full of that kind of stuff.”
“What, I could have yelled I want to suck your blood and made it a real thriller right here on the lawn?”
“Why the hell not,” laughing, she closed her eyes, focused for a moment, and felt the ears and tail disappear, slipping away into nothingness. “It’s a great scare tactic.”
“Well, how about we go inside and I give you a scare tactic hmm?”
“Oh, I was kind of hoping we could get started on the Christmas tree…”
“You witches and your pagan nonsense.” Ev stood and pulled Val up with him, fingers pulling at the hoodie she was still wearing.
“If you let me put the tree up early I’ll make you a steak, extra bloody.”
“See, now that’s a bargain!” Giving her side a pinch, Val pulled back to look up at him. His teeth were bared, canines sliding down just so before he grinned ferally. “How about you let me suck your blood instead…”
“You’re fifteen hundred years old, and you’ve been using that line since the forties…” She murmured against his lips.
“Worked well enough, didn’t it?” He kissed her back, pressing his face against her neck and grazing his teeth over her pulse point. “You fell for it.”
“Well, when you put it that way…”
