“Good morning, glasses.”
You groan in response.
“Aw, you always look so grumpy in the morning…” Minho holds out a to-go cup, “Here’s your latte.”
“Thank you.” You mutter into the cup as you take a sip.
He’d quickly learned that while you didn’t really enjoy coffee, unless there were obscene amounts of milk and sugar in it, you did love a chai latte.
“What do you do on days when your first class isn’t with me?” He asks as the pair of you walk down the hall to your class
“It’s not like I ask you to bring me a drink, I’m perfectly capable of getting my own.” You’d made the mistake of assuming the first time he did it would be the only time, leaving you with two chai lattes the next time you met up to walk to class. You’d stopped buying yourself a drink on days you had class with Minho.
“I know I don’t have to, but I’m picking up mine anyway, why wouldn’t I grab yours? I’ve filled like two punch cards this month because of us.” He chuckles.
“It’s your money.” You chuckle, taking another sip of the creamy spiced tea.
“Really, it’s selfish on my part. I need that brain of yours sharp, study buddy.”
“I got you something.” You change the subject, pulling a white bag out of your backpack and holding it to him.
“You—wait, really?” He takes the bag and peaks inside, “You got me a muffin?”
He takes a bite and his eyes blow wide. “Raspberry white chocolate!” He says without swallowing, wiping away an invisible tear, “Glasses, you sentimental softy! You do like me!”
“You know what, no, you don’t deserve it. Give it back.” You reach for the muffin but Minho holds it out of your reach.
“No, no, you can’t have it back. It’s mine and I will cherish every crumb.”
You walk in silence for a while, passing the occasional group of students walking to class or just chatting in the hallways. You can’t help but notice Lia’s missing posters still scattered around the halls. Some ripped, others written on, but most intact, as though people didn’t want to take them down and face the fact that she was… dead.
“Have you heard anything about Lia? Have the police released a statement?” You ask.
Minho swallows the sip of coffee he’d just taken, shaking his head. “Not that I’ve seen. I’m honestly shocked they haven’t figured out what happened to her… or arrested someone.”
“Didn’t that guy from your dorm building go missing? Jisung, right?”
“Yeah, people stopped hearing about him like a week ago.”
“And that doesn't worry you?” You ask, a little shocked at his nonchalance.
“It’s probably a prank.” Minho shrugs, taking another bite of his muffin, thankfully swallowing before he spoke again. “Everyone is so freaked out because they still haven’t found that couple from last month. I mean… if they ran off, someone should have heard from them by now, right?”
“I heard a theory that maybe the couple had something to do with Lia’s death and made a run for it.” You offer.
You weren’t much for most of the theories around the campus but Seungmin had mentioned it a few days ago and you couldn’t get the idea out of your head. “I don’t know, maybe it’s a stretch. Why would they run when it doesn’t seem like the cops have made any connections. They hadn’t even found her body when they disappeared.”
Minho was about to respond but you’d reached the classroom, it was uncharacteristically dark and the door was closed.
“There’s a note.” Minho says, leaning in to read the professor's tiny handwriting. He groans, “If class was canceled why not send a text? I could have slept in! Or we could have gone to breakfast. Oh…” He turns back to you, “Glasses, we can still go to breakfast. There’s a diner not far from—why are you opening the door? The note says we’re free!”
You ignore him, pushing the door open, “She might have left assignments on the board.”
“If we have any assignments I’m sure we’ll get an email or–”
“If all she did was put a note on the door, why are you assuming she’ll send an email for assignments?”
“Okay, yeah, the note on the door is pretty old school so why not—oh fuck!”
The second you flipped the lights on, it went dark again, Minho had clasped a hand over your eyes. “Don’t look.”
You heard his coffee drop to the floor and spill, a few drops hitting your leg.
“What the fuck! What happened?” You reach up to pull his hand away.
“It… it’s bad. Just… We’re backing out of the room.” Minho slowly starts to move you backwards
“Minho, come on, this isn’t funny–”
“I’ve got you, just… just trust me… please.”
You hear the sound of the classroom door closing before he removes his hand from over your eyes.
“Okay… okay, you can open your eyes.”
“What was that!?” You smack him. “You scared the shit out of me!”
“I’m sorry I grabbed you like that but… I didn’t want you to see that. It was… bad. Fuck!”
“What was it!?”
“It was… Oh, god, I think it was that couple… They were propped up in the seats at the back of the room. Shit. Shit. Shit. Who the fuck would…”
“Look, I’ll stay here, make sure no one goes in and you can go get help.”
“What? No, I’m not going to leave you here to guard the door. Someone…” He grits his teeth, leaning closer and lowering his voice, “Glasses, someone killed them and put them there. They weren’t…fresh.”
“How could you–”
He interrupts, “I’ll stay here and make sure no one else goes in. You go find someone, okay?”
“Fine, whatever.” You turn away from him, getting a few steps before he latches onto your hand.
“Wait!”
You stop, looking from his hold on your hand up to him.
“No. No, don’t.”
“You’re the one who–”
“I know I did! But it’s a bad idea.”
“Minho…” You groan, stepping closer, “I’ll be right back, I–”
“The person that did that might not be far and… people disappear, remember? Lia was between classes and the couple was walking to the cafeteria when they vanished. I’m not going to send you off by yourself.”
“Minho this is ridiculous, we need to tell someone. I’ll just run to the office and–”
Minho cuts you off again, stern, “No. I’m calling the police. You can call the office and tell someone to come down here.”
“Well I can’t do anything until you let go of my hand.” You said, holding up your still joined hands.
“What? Oh, sorry, yeah.” He drops it, “Just don’t run off. I will chase you, glasses, and we both know you can’t outrun me.”
“I’m not really in the mood for jokes, Min.” You roll your eyes, pulling out your phone.
“I mean it, Y/N. I would sooner tackle you than let you out of my sight right now.”
“Fine! Jeez, I won’t go anywhere.”
“Thank you.”
You pull out your phone, still in shock at what just happened, your hands shake as you find the contact for the main office on campus. Meanwhile Minho had dialed 911.
“Hi. I–uh, I’m in the art wing at SU and I… I think we found some bodies… yeah, like the dead kind…”
You’d been studying for three hours. It was weird to be alone in the dorms. Giselle had moved out of your dorm and you’d been able to put in for one of the single rooms. You were surprised there were any left so late in the semester but after everything that’d been going on on campus you weren’t shocked no one wanted to be alone.
But you didn’t mind.
It was all going to blow over.
The cops were going to find out what happened. Someone was going to be arrested, people would stop going missing and those who did would be found. It would be fine– You jumped at the knock on your door. You glance from your clock to the locked door, it was past midnight. Who in the world was here? It couldn’t be Chan cause he was out with Felix and he always texted you before he came over. Giselle had been ignoring your texts for days, and Seungmin had gone home following the art wing incident, opting to finish the semester online.
You go back to writing, intending to ignore the intruder, but they knocked again. This time followed by a hushed voice.
“Glasses! Open up!”
You sigh, you should’ve known. You get up from the desk and walk over to the door, unlocking it and cracking it open.
Minho smiles in relief, “Oh, thank god. Let me in?”
“Why? What are you doing here?” You ask.
He chuckles, “Really? Why? Because I ran through the rain with all my worldly possessions to your doorstep. Have mercy!”
His normally perfect hair was wet, sticking to his forehead, and he did indeed have a backpack as well as a duffle bag on his shoulder.
“Please, glasses. My whole dorm building got closed down. It’s a crime scene, I guess. They kicked everyone out.”
“And you came here?” You raise an eyebrow.
“I was going to crash at this other friend’s, but he’s already got three guys from my building sleeping there and I don’t want to be in that dogpile.”
You bite your lip, hesitating.
“Please? Pleasepleaseplease?” He says, giving you his best puppy-dog eyes.
He wasn’t as good at it as Seungmin but…
“I know you don’t have a roommate anymore. I won’t get in your way, I swear. I’ll camp out on the floor. I love camping. My dad used to take me on these weeklong trips in the woods and I used to go by myself all the time.”
You step back from the door, opening it wide enough for him to slip inside.
“You’re amazing, thank you! I promise, you won’t even notice I’m here.”
Once he’s inside you close the door and lock it again.
“You are my savior! I owe you!” Minho slips off his shoes and sets his bags down by the door, “So, this is your room…”
He looks around, taking in the space. And suddenly you were feeling very self-conscious about how messy it was.
“This is bigger than I thought. Look at all this floor space, glasses. And you have a fluffy rug. It’s like it was meant to be.”
Minho pulls his hoodie over his head and hangs it on the empty coat hook on the back of your door. You make a point not to look at his abs as his shirt rides up.
You lean against the door, crossing your arms over your chest, “So, what happened at your building? You said it was a crime scene?”
“Huh? Oh… yeah they… they found the missing guy from my building. After what we found in the classroom the other day, I guess the cops were doing a more thorough search of the whole campus with…” He cringes, “Cadaver dogs. They found him in one of the basement storage rooms…”
Your eyes go wide, “Holy shit… did you… did they say how it happened?”
“I don’t know. I didn’t see it and they weren’t telling us more than that when they kicked us out of the building. I think they want to search all our rooms, like they think it was a student that did it. I got out of there with my shit before they could start doing bag checks on the way out.”
“Why were you in such a rush…?”
“Because I was hoping to find a place to crash before everyone else I know. Somehow those guys were still ahead of me…”
“I wasn’t your first choice?” You smirk.
“Well, no…”
You gasp in mock offense, “I am shocked and offended, Minho.”
He laughs, rolling his eyes, “Don’t take offense! As much as you think that irritating you is my favorite hobby, it’s not. I’m trying to make you like me and hanging my wet hoodie on your door and snoring on your floor isn’t exactly the smartest move. Although… getting to show you how I look shirtless and how cute I am when I wake up could be exactly what we need.”
You shake your head, moving to your desk to clean up. You slide your notebook back into your bag and set the textbooks to the side before Minho speaks up again.
“Wait, you were still studying? Shit, I thought for sure I’d be waking you up. No wonder you’re always such a grump in the morning. What time is your first class tomorrow? You know, assuming they don’t cancel those too.”
“8:30.” You say flatly. “I usually get up at six or seven.”
“My first class isn’t until ten, but I get up around seven to go for a run. Do you want to come with?”
You give him a look that says ‘are you out of your mind’ because in what world would you willingly go running, forget with Minho.
He laughs, “I’ll take that look as a tentative maybe…” He sits down on the fluffy carpet on the floor, “Maybe this was for the best.”
You whip around, “Getting kicked out of your building because someone died was for the best?”
“No! That's not… I meant my other friend’s floor space being filled. By the way, cute pajamas.” He looks you up and down, taking in the matching hello kitty pjs you’d had since high school. “If I’d known we were having a slumber party, I would have at least worn something matching…” He looks down at his clothes, a damp white t-shirt and some loose grey sweatpants, sounding slightly sheepish, “I was in bed when they started kicking us out.”
“Where did everyone else end up staying?” You ask, turning off the lamp on your desk and walking over to the olive green beanbag by your bed.
“I think a bunch of them are bunking in the library.”
“Ooo, fun!” You say, seemingly genuine.
“That does not sound like fun!” Minho disagrees intensely, “It sounds drafty and creepy. I would much rather sleep on your floor. Speaking of… do you have an extra blanket?”
Before he’d even finished you’d pulled the extra blanket off your beanbag, a heavy pale blue one you liked to use when you read, and tossed it at him.
He catches it “Perfect, thanks.” He gasps, “And a pillow? You really know how to treat a guy…” He catches the large pillow you’d pulled from your bed and tossed at him.
“You even have a mini fridge and a microwave in here! Oh, we’re set.” He seems to cut himself off, “Is… Glasses, is that a nightlight?”
You instantly eye the nightlight plugged into the socket by your bed and step in front of it, “No.”
“Too late, I already saw it. And it was shaped like the moon!”
“Shut up…” You say, looking down shyly. “I’ll just unplug it.”
“No, it’s adorable! Leave the poor nightlight alone.”
He sets up his space, setting down the pillow and pulling the blanket over him, “This actually isn’t bad…”
You turn off the light by your bed and crawl under the covers.
“It’s a cute nightlight.” Minho says into the darkness.
“Shut up.”
“Don’t worry, glasses. I’m sure this’ll just be for one night.” Minho yawns and you can hear him adjusting on the floor, “But, you know, now that I know where you are and that you have your own microwave that doesn’t smell like someone’s overcooked tuna, I’ll probably be over more often.”
You don’t entertain him with an answer. You’re both quiet for a while before a thought crosses your mind.
“Did you know him?” You say quietly, “The guy from your building?”
“Not really… I think he lived on the first floor but I’m not sure we ever met.”
Another silence, shorter this time before Minho speaks again, “Do you think it’s really a serial killer like everyone is saying? I don’t think they’ve been able to find any connection between the victims. It’s like it’s just random.”
“I think that’s scarier…”
“Yeah…” Minho says darkly, “Some of my classes have already switched to online this week. I guess they could close the campus and send us home… where’s home for you, glasses?”
“The other side of the country.” You chuckle, humorlessly.
“Long way for school, huh?”
“I wanted to get away…” School was your escape. It’s not that you had a terrible relationship with your family but they had always been pretty overbearing. Going to school somewhere they couldn’t easily reach you was the only way you’d managed to get them off your back. And that’s not counting the daily texts and phone calls. “What about you?”
“Um… My dad had a place upstate.”
“Would you go home if… if things go to shit here?”
“No, I don’t think so.”
You were a little surprised by his answer. Minho had always talked fondly of his family the few times he’d mentioned them. “What would you do instead?”
“I don’t know. Maybe I’ll crash with some friends in the city and wait it out? I mean, if there’s no one left on campus then our serial killer will have to branch out too, right? What about you? Would you go home?”
“I don’t know… maybe but I’d rather not.”
“You could stick with me…” He offers, “Worst case scenario, we take that road trip we talked about.”
“We?”
You swear you can hear the smirk on his face as he speaks, “Okay, that road trip I talked about.”
“Hmm, maybe…”
He shoots up from his place on the floor, “Really? Oh, glasses, you’re really into me now.”
“Shut up, Minho.” You sigh, adjusting your position in bed.
“It’s kind of embarrassing…” He says, voice playful, “You were so tough and mean when we started talking.”
“Go to sleep, Minho.” You say, eyes closed.
You hear Minho lay back down, “Okay, okay, I’m shutting up. Good night, softy.”
You’re startled awake by a clap of thunder, jumping up in bed. You shiver, as the cold air hits your exposed arms. Suddenly you realize it’s pitch black, no light coming from your window or the nightlight.
You get out of bed, slowly move to the outlet and unplugging your light and plugging it back in. Nothing.
“Glasses?” You hear Minho’s slurred voice from your left. “Did you turn out your nightlight?”
You don’t answer, standing up and flicking your lamp. Again, nothing.
“The powers out.” You mumble to no one in particular.
“The power–?”
Minho stops as a shrill scream is heard outside, down the hall.
Your chest tightens, moving back towards your bed, “Did you–?”
“Yeah, I heard it.” Minho stands up, walking closer to you.
“M-Minho–” You stutter, body shaking.
“Y/N, it’s–”
A loud thump against the door and you slap and hand over your mouth, curling yourself into the corner of the bed against the wall. The bed dips as Minho crawls on top, moving closer to you, “Hey, it’s okay. I’m right here.”
“Minho, what if–” The door thumps again and you let Minho pull you into his arms.
“No, hang on. It’s probably a prank. Those are the same screams you hear in the gymnasium when the lights go out. Some of the assholes from my building probably messed with the power in yours to scare people.”
“Should we check?” You ask, even though that is the last thing you want to do.
“No, we’re not checking. We’re going to sit right here and just give it a minute.”
“But what if–”
“Glasses, even if it’s some guys being jerks, there is an actual killer out there somewhere and you are not going out there in the dark. It’s like, Slasher 101.” Minho holds you tighter, a few moments of silence passing.
“It’s so dark…” You mumble, turning your head into his shoulder.
“Shh, I know.”
“Wait, my phone.” You look up, moving to pat across your comforter.
Minho pulls you back, “No, don’t turn the light on on your phone.”
“Why?” You whisper.
“Because…” Now that your eyes have adjusted a little you can see Minho looking towards the door before looking back at you, “Because if there is someone creeping around in the hall, they might see it shine under the door.”
“Don’t say shit like that.” You whine quietly.
“It’s going to be okay. We’ll just—”
You jump as your lamp flickers to life.
“See, the light’s back on.” Minho smiles at you.
You can hear muffled laughter and yelling outside as people retreat to their rooms.
“You guys are assholes!”
“Go to sleep!”
“That’s not funny!”
Minho lets out a nervous laugh, “See? Told you.”
“That sucked.” You groan.
“Yeah, I’ll admit, I’ve been with the assholes playing pranks enough times to see one coming…”
Minho looks back at you and his eyes go slightly wide, “Hey… were you crying?”
You freeze, reaching up to wipe your cheeks. They were damp with tears, you hadn’t even noticed. You quickly turn away, trying to wipe them away with your sleeve.
“Oh, shit, glasses. No, it’s okay. Here, let me clean you up.” He reaches for the tissue by your bed and gently wipes the tears from your red cheeks. “I’ve got you.”
“You’re staying, right.” You mumble.
He smiles at you, tossing the tissue in the trash by your bed, “Yeah, of course I’m staying. I’ll be right there on the floor.”
“N-no, like… will you stay… with me?”
He turns back to you, “Stay… you mean on the bed?”
You nod shyly.
“Yeah. Sure. Whatever you need. Here, lay down.” You both adjust on the bed, getting under the covers. Minho grins, “Do you want to be little spoon or big spoon?”
“Little…” You say quietly.
He pulls you against him, wrapping his arm protectively around your waist, “Okay?”
You nod, “Are you okay?”
“Yeah, I’m good. The only place better than your floor is your bed.” You smack him softly making him chuckle, “Get some sleep, glasses. I’m right here.”
