The women of the Hamar (predominantly in Ethiopia 🇪🇹) are sometimes recognized by the copper/red pigment that coats their hair. The mixture is made of a clay called red ochre, butter and at times, ash. It is then applied to twisted or braided hair, making cylindrical strands called "goscha." The hairstyle symbolizes beauty, social status, and in some cases, a readiness for marriage.
