Hear me out in this i genuinely view Miku Binder Thomas Jefferson as a work of art. In the piece, the former US president and foundational writer of the American Declaration of Independence and Constitution, Thomas Jefferson, is drawn as the actor who portrayed him in the 2012 musical Hamiltion, David Diggs. In the piece, Jefferson is a black, gay, trans man with dip-dyed hair, a shirt that says “I met God, she’s black”, and a binder with the vocaloid artist/character Hatsune Miku on it. This could not be made just years before, and it couldn’t be made today. It captures the environment of 2017 fandom culture so perfectly, as both a parody and a genuine expression and appreciation for fandom, and a reaction to the social justice culture of tumblr. When I think of it in comparison to works viewed as actual art, I find more personal significance in Miku Thomas Jefferson. When I think of the Mona Lisa, for example, I think of how it looks nice and is well done. It demonstrates the popular art styles of the time and shows da Vinci’s artistic skill and talent, making it historically significant. For me personally, however, the piece realistically means nothing and at most evokes mild feelings of awe. When I see it, I generally just think “cool” and move on. Miku binder Thomas Jefferson, on the other hand, makes me cringe and laugh as I both judge it and appreciate it. It embodies the time of its creation so well it makes me genuinely nostalgic for 2017 when I saw the piece for the first time. The effort put into it is embarrassing and hilarious and honorable. Details like “Johns former drug dealer…” are genuinely so funny to me and strangely mean more to me than the Mona Lisa even could. I wouldn’t go as far to say that I think it is better done than the Mona Lisa or that it has the same cultural and historical significance, but I would say that it is a beautiful work of art for what it represents and that it needs to be appreciated for that. Ty for coming to my ted talk
