Giving the shield a bit of a more rectangular shape and possible texture. As well, completely designed a hand crossbow from scratch. Utilizing an idea referenced in ancient Chinese records, we have a crossbow designed to shoot lead balls! Of course, I took the liberty of adding some modern elements, such as the compound bow to it, but it is theoretically something you could make using today's technology. Or maybe even yesterday's.

Hunger & Thirst

Very Rare & Very Rare, A set of hand crossbows, Requires Attunement.

Hunger

+2 to attack and damage. As part of your attack, you can trade your attack bonus to bonus damage, for example take a penalty of -2 on your attack roll to deal 2 bonus damage. You can deal up to 3 bonus damage that way. When carrying Thirst in your other hand, that limit increases to 5.

Thirst

+1 to attack and damage. When used in the same round to attack as Hunger, you gain an additional +2 to attack and damage. In addition, after you’ve successfully attacked a creature with Thirst, you automatically apply hunter’s mark to them. This can happen no more than once per long rest.

While being attuned to both hand crossbows at the same time, always feel hungry and thirsty, even after having a meal. The feeling is only pacified when holding both weapons in your hands.

Rare, Hand Crossbow

+1 to attack and damage

When scoring a killing blow with this weapon, you gain temporary hit points equal to the damage you did with that attack. These disappear after 1 minute.

Weapon: Hand Crossbow (and bolts)

Load: Loading a hand crossbow is a move action that provokes attacks of opportunity.

Note: You can draw a hand crossbow back by hand. You can shoot, but not load, a hand crossbow with one hand at no penalty. You can shoot a hand crossbow with each hand, but you take a penalty on attack rolls as if attacking with two light weapons.

Half-Elf Ranger Commission

This illustration of a half-elf ranger equipped with a hand crossbow, chainmail shirt, and buckler affixed to his forearm was done on commission for a tabletop RPG player who wanted his character visualised. I particularly enjoyed working on this, not only for my love of the wilderness but also because the very first character I played for D&D (back when 3rd edition came out) was a half-elf ranger.
