Scarlet Heart Ryeo has been giving me serious Maids flashbacks
And now we have Hae Soo being demoted to maid - which I think means she becomes a slave. At least- all the servants in Hanyeodeul/Maids were of the slave class.
It's an interesting development - that sucks for Hae Soo because now she will have even less freedom and control than before- but interesting plot wise because when So becomes King Gwangjong one of his reforms is a resolution freeing slaves. At least - some slaves. While Shine Or Go Crazy (the other big Wang So centric drama) spends a huge part of the narrative showing how meeting the heroine and learning from her influences So's attitudes towards slavery, Scarlet Heart Ryeo has him focused on himself pretty much always.
Maybe witnessing Hae Soo's experience as a slave will form an impression. Although why she has to suffer for his enlightenment... Whatever.
Although - if the noble suitors of Maids are anything to judge by- having So interested in her is going to bring her nothing but trouble. Well, more trouble.
Kdrama Women’s Week: Day 6
Most Likely to Escape an Abusive Relationship: Heo Yoon Ok (Maids)
Heo Yoon Ok doesn’t quite fit the description of a lead left at the last minute in a toxic relationship romanticized by the narrative, but her ending—and the way it was treated by the narrative—never fails to upset me, so I just had to write about her anyways.
Yoon Ok spends the last episode of Maids being stripped of her noble status and sent to work as a slave. As it turns out, she’s sent to work as a slave in the household of a lecherous old man—the same lecherous old man who Yoon Ok once sent In Yub to serve, and the same lecherous old man who only wanted a female servant in the first place so he could have someone to make babies for him. Not only is Yoon Ok now in that same position, she’s also accompanied by Poong San. The same Poong San who used to be In Yub’s fellow slave, and the same Poong San who once tried to rape In Yub. See where I’m going with this? The narrative is clearly trying to drive home the point that In Yub and Yoon Ok have switched places, and that Yoon Ok is getting her just due by being forced to live in that same hell that In Yub once endured. Funny, right?
WRONG!
Yoon Ok may have done some very, very despicable things, but she definitely does not deserve to be left with a lecherous old man and a potential rapist. The fact that the drama seems to think that’s something to laugh at is truly disappointing, given that it is such a well-written and lady-centric drama in every other respect.
I’d like to think that rather than Yoon Ok living a life of misery and abuse, she follows the same transformation that In Yub went through. In Yub was a noble who became a slave before becoming a noble again; the idea of re-birth played heavily into In Yub’s changes in status, in the sense that the experience allowed In Yub to learn and grow and ultimately to emerge from her ordeal as a better person. No matter how many horrible deeds Yoon Ok committed, she deserves that same chance at re-birth, and I’ll just choose to believe that she gets that chance.
#kdramawomensweek - day 4: favourite female lead ➜ gook in yub (maids)
“Even though they can’t help us, we can help each other.”
Where do I even begin with In Yub? In Yub in the first episode of Maids is wealthy, arrogant and selfish, not knowing of what lies ahead. She falls to servant status after her father is arrested for treason and has to deal with the harsh reality of having no one on her side. In Yub grows into an admirable and independent woman who learns to appreciate the smallest of things, and that’s what I love her for. She is not perfect; nothing about her is sugar coated. But she learns and grows, like we all do.
