Happy Bertday!!!

Well, it’s that time of year again: my baby boy’s birthday!!! So, as per usual, I had no time to write anything, and will just throw you all a bunch of headcanons. Here are last year’s and the year before. Enjoy!!!

Children love Bertholdt, and he has no idea why. All of his friend’s little cousins and their eventual children warm up to him immediately. He just has a calm vibe that kids flock to, and they love to climb on him because he’s so tall, and he’s so confused why they love him but he’ll never complain about it cause it’s kind of a superpower. 

He’s a huge Disney fan. He loves all of the films, and knows all of the songs by heart, and will get into heated debates about which characters would survive longest in the apocalypse. 

He’s very close with his parents. He spent the most time with them out of his siblings, and he just loves talking with them and hearing all their stories and making them proud. He tries his hardest to make his parents proud in everything that he does. 

His favorite color is green. But he also really loves blue.

Bertholdt is usually warmer than most people and doesn’t get cold easily, but he loves to cuddle. He loves to curl up under a few blankets, with his S/O or just a good book, and just curl up in the warmth and enjoy it. 

He usually volunteers to be designated driver when the squad goes out. It’s not that he doesn’t like drinking, but he just prefers to be the one that’s sober and in control of himself. He also has a really high alcohol tolerance, and he’s very rarely willing to try to get there. 

He tans easily. He’s only been sunburned twice in his life, and he usually just ends up with a golden tan that makes him look like a Greek god. 

He loves dogs. Cats too. He really just loves animals that he can pet and cuddle with. When he has his own dog, he loves to take it for walks and runs in the park, and he spoils that dog so much cause he loves it to death. He’d love a cat just as much, and probably gets one too. 

He gets very nervous around his crushes. When he realizes how much he’s into someone, he just freezes up and doesn’t know how to talk to them. It’s a slow process of him just hanging around them, being a little extra nice and smiling at them all the time, until he’s comfortable enough to actually open up to them and start flirting. Bertholdt’s always thought he should be the one to make the first move, and that puts a lot of unnecessary stress on him. So he kind of appreciates it when his crush either moves first or at least tells him that they feel the same so he can make the first move with confidence. 

He cries at his own wedding. He probably also cries at Annie and Reiner’s weddings, whether he’s the one they’re marrying or not. 

He loves to build puzzles and legos, and things that involve him moving his hands and working his brain. 

Canon Additions: 

He was super nervous to be given the Colossal Titan, but was secretly so proud of receiving that honor and couldn’t wait to tell his father when he got home. 

All of the warrior cadets liked him. It was too hard to dislike him. He was just so nice and tried so hard and was so naturally talented, it was hard to not want to be his friend. He was really close with Reiner, of course, but also really bonded with Marcel and Pieck. And Annie more than the others. 

He would read books to his warrior friends and would make up stories when they got bored of all the same books. He liked to escape into books, and wanted to share his escape route with his friends. 

During his time in the cadet corps, he had awful nightmares about their mission, but never told anyone what they were about. Not even Reiner. But Reiner knew. 

Shadis actually really enjoyed having him as a cadet, because he was so talented and actually cooperative and mature for a teenager. 

He still told stories to his fellow cadets, because they all still needed to escape from the horrors of their daily lives. 

A part of him hoped that he would be able to make friendships strong enough with the cadets that they wouldn’t hate him when they found out his secret. He didn’t expect to keep their friendship, but hoped that they would at least try to understand that someone who had been their friend wouldn’t be all bad. He figured he was wrong, and never got confirmation otherwise.

Happy Bertday!

It’s December 30th, which happens to be Bertholdt Hoover’s birthday! And, because he is my favorite, and I’m also incapable of writing things on time, we’re going to have a headcanon party for our boy! These are going to be a continuation of last year’s, so hopefully, I haven’t repeated anything...

Bertholdt doesn’t curse. It’s not that he has a problem with cursing, and he doesn’t mind when others do it, but he just does not use swear words on a regular basis. So when he does swear, it’s either absolutely terrifying or ridiculously adorable. 

He’s a great listener, and the squad often goes to him when they need to vent or talk something out. He also gives great advice, but not if you ask for it up front. If you ask for it up front, he’ll get nervous about it, but if it comes up naturally in conversation, it’s wonderful. 

He’s naturally a very graceful person. No matter the activity, (3DMG train gin, hand-to-hand combat, running, swimming, dancing, walking and existing like a normal person, etc.) Bertholdt just has a natural grace and poise in the way he carries himself, which is slightly surprising, given his lanky limbs. 

That being said, Bertholdt has really awesome muscles, but is super shy about them, and likes to let Reiner take the spotlight when it comes to that. Like his abs are gorgeous but you’d never know cause he so rarely takes his shirt off in front of people. It’s almost tragic.

Bertholdt loves to read. He could read for hours without getting bored, and loves pretty much every genre. And he’s never abandoned a book. He doesn’t believe in giving up on a book, no matter how bad. 

His body temperature is naturally higher than normal, which makes  winters less torturous and summers more torturous.  

He really likes pancakes. 

He’s the squad’s go-to paper checker, because he’ll tell you just how bad your paper is in the nicest way possible, and will not only tell you how to fix it but also how to improve for future papers

Similarly, he’s the kind of students who freaks out about papers. He starts them relatively early (this could mean anywhere from a week to three days before it’s due, which is early compared to his friends who usually start the day before (i.e. Annie) or the night before (i.e. Jean)). Then he gets super nervous about it, feeling like it’s going to be a terrible paper, when he’s never written a paper that’s received a grade lower than a B. It’s just a very stressful time for a very stressed out person. 

Bertholdt is an absolutely phenomenal singer. Josh Groban level voice. 

Reiner and Annie are his best friends. They met as kids, and grew up together, like vines that grew intertwined. They know everything about each other, how to make each other laugh or cry or stop crying. Regardless of your romantic preferences, the three of them remain close as they grow up and fall in love, and live together for a while when they’re young adults, (this being that Annie lives with Reibert, Reiner lives with Beruani, and Bertholdt lives with Raiannie, or they’re all in a polyamourous relationship and living together. Up to you!) They get a cat, who loves Bertholdt most. Then a dog, who also is partial to Bertholdt. When kids come into the picture, they grow up with three parent figures, even if one is an uncle/aunt. They’re just very close and it’s really touching. 

He gets anxious when in shopping malls by himself, especially if he doesn’t have a clear goal in mind for being there. 

He loves board games/card games, and is always up for squad game night. He’s particularly a fan of strategy games, throughly enjoying observing how each member of the squad approaches the game. He just loves spending time with his friends, too, and games are so engaging and fun for them. 

He’s a Hufflepuff. (Ravenclaw for second, but still a Hufflepuff.)

Bertholdt never wants people to worry about him, believing that he doesn’t need to burden others with his problems when they’re already dealing with their own. So he bottles up his own emotions, be they physical pain or emotional distress, and puts on a happy front so that others can’t see that he’s hurting and will instead continue to work through their own pain instead of acknowledging his. Because Bertholdt knows the world is full of pain, and acknowledges that his knowledge is pretty unique among his friends, and therefore doesn’t want to increase other’s sadness by adding his own. It’s really a self-depricating process, putting himself beneath others but hiding it under the reasoning of trying to help them. He will automatically answer “I’m fine” no matter the scenario. 

That being said, a few people have figured this out. He cannot fool Reiner, Annie, or Ymir at all. All three know when he really isn’t okay, but choose based on the moment whether or not to call him on it. Sometimes, they figure it’s better to let him lie about it, especially if they’re in public or with the group, and will then talk him through it when they’re alone. Armin, Sasha, and Marco have also gotten pretty adept at knowing when something’s wrong, but usually leave it up to Reiner or Annie to step in, only because they know the three of them are closer. 

He loves the Olympics, both summer and winter.

And bonus one I’ve been holding onto forever:

Bertholdt is the third of four kids, and is the epitome of a middle child: He’s shy, quiet, lets others overshadow him. But his brothers love him to death, and refuse to let him become invisible. All four of them are boys: oldest brother is Jordan, then Berick, then Bertholdt, then Gregory. And while they have their differences, they’re all very similar and get along great. Jordan’s the perfect older brother that they all aspire to be: smart, charming, and exceptionally personable and caring. Berick’s the one who’s always trying to make people laugh. Bertholdt’s the quiet, endearing one. And then Gregory is just plain adorable. They’re the best. 

In canon, I theorize that Jordan was the titan shifter Bertholdt ate to become a shifter. Berick died on the mission. And Gregory died before the mission started, killed by an outbreak of a disease that also killed their mother. (Now, this was all before recent chapters, and I’m still clinging to it until we get more information.)
