This idiot somehow sliced his tail on something– in a part of the house where there's no sharp edges. Magic! But not the good kind!!

Late night vet visit got it sorted out but now he must wear pants to prevent licking.

I ended up putting his old surgery recovery suit on just to make sure the pants wouldn't slip off, so now this man has a complete set of clothes.

Hi! How is Thistle's 'happy tail' doing these days? X

It is very good!!! She has a bald calloused tip on the end, it looks super weird but it’s just slightly dry scarring. I vaguely hope it will grow back but she may just always have a bald spot. I moisturise it every other night to encourage healing:

I’m very glad we got it under control n_n the key was addressing the problem - over excitement inside the house.

(this photo was before christmas, it’s a bit more continuous grey now. I do hope the fur will grow back but...idk...it took 8 months for fur to grow back in her puncture wounds and they grew back in white so who knows how the tail will go. We’re keeping on top of the excitement and in-house manners.)

I had a dog who wagged her tail so hard against things! I'm wondering now, looking back, if it was happy tail. She is long gone now, she passed a way a few years ago. But I remember that one time she dented a metal screen door with her tail and was perfectly fine! Or at least, she didn't seem to be hurt. She kept wagging her tail like normal and we didn't see any obvious injuries.

A dog with a tail, who is very happy, does not necessarily have Happy Tail.

Happy Tail refers to a syndrome where the dog self traumatizes the tip of their tail again and again and again.

The typical appearance is an extremely happy which is spraying blood droplets over a wide area from first banging its tail against something, breaking the skin, and then continuing to wag the bleeding appendage all over the place. It can look quite dramatic. The blood is typically spread over a wide area.

While it’s most common on dogs that have whip-like tails, thin skin and thin fur, like the greyhound and SBT, any dog can get it. I would say that many can heal with careful bandaging and management, but chronic cases will sometimes require amputation of the last joint or two of the tail.
