- jack describes michael as “this kid, like les, but younger.” later, when jack scabs, les hits him in the mouth and draws blood; a cop retaliates against les, whose head strikes a wagon wheel, triggering a horrifying flashback for jack of michael’s death. he throws himself on his knees, picks up les, and carries him. les’ blood covers his new clothes. he pays for the doctor.
