So, I might have made Newsies (1992) trading cards...

There are ten characters and thirteen cards total (Jack, David, and Sarah each have an alternate card). Everything I put on the cards is either from canonical information, interviews, or historical sources. (If you would like to know where I got any particular factoid from, let me know!)

sorry but my biggest pet peeve might very well be when the Jacobs siblings are put together but it's the musical characters + Sarah

Les gets called in the reaping and David volunteers to save him, there's no world where he wouldn't protect Les.

But Sarah won't lose either of her brothers and she volunteers as the female tribute to make sure David makes it home.

David is furious with Sarah out of his fear for her, the knowledge that even if he manages to make it out of this it will come at the cost of her life makes him sick and he vows to make sure that Sarah's the one who goes home.

Sarah, of course, has vowed the same of David and neither budges in their conviction to protect the other.

This leads to a degree of estrangement between the two and when they get to the arena they are alone.

David's strategy is to be forgotten, Sarah's strategy is to learn about her opponents. She joins a group and makes notes of their strengths and weak points. Although she only plans to exploit this knowledge to keep herself alive for as long as possible and help David win.

There's a young boy from another district. His name is Michael and he reminds David painfully of Les. He ends up in an alliance with Michael.

Michael tells David about his big brother. He and Michael had tried to escape their district a year ago, headed for the rumored resistance in District 13. They'd almost made it out together, but Michael had been caught and taken back. Michael hasn't seen his brother since and doesn't know what happened to him after they were separated...

You know how this has to end. Michael is killed. David cradles him in his arms as his life slips away and he hates the games more than he ever has in that moment. In an act of defiance, he cleans the boy's young face and tenderly adorns him in small stones. Michael will never see his big brother again.

Late in the games, the rules change. Suddenly there can be two winners if they are both from the same district. David and Sarah are both still alive. Does the Capital have a heart after all?

No. The answer is no. After Sarah and David reunite and they come out the other side, the rules change again. The games are nothing more than sickening entertainment, and the game makers just wanted the dramatic finale of brother and sister fighting to the death. But Sarah and David won't play their games and call their bluff with a handful of berries... (Sarah's idea btw)

Much later on, David meets Michael's brother in District 13.

Les Jacobs who made it home with his own triumphs and terrors to tell.

Les Jacobs who planted a seed of wonder in the heart of a starry eyed grandkid, just as one had been planted so tenderly in his own, and lead a later generation to dream of the stars.

Les Jacobs who lived to see his grandchild carry on the torch and venture into space.
