Okay but if we consider different scenes in an A/B/O perspective (can be either werewolf or not, I’m not picky), that whole Hardwick scene gets way more interesting. Like Alpha Hotch about to throw down to protect Omega Reid who maybe he sees as his at this point even if they haven’t gotten together (he’s working up to it now that he’s divorced) and has maybe just started very subtly courting him but now Hardwick is threatening his life and Hotch’s protective instincts go into overdrive. But then Reid, and omega, outsmarts Hardwick because as sure as he is Hotch would win, he also doesn’t want to risk Hotch getting injured so with some quick thinking he talks their way out of the situation. Hotch is very impressed and it 100% reaffirms Reid as his choice. I also just thought, maybe he’s been considering Reid for a long time now, specifically since Hankel when he realized his protectiveness was borne from more than just that of a unit chief concerned for a subordinate but at the time he was still with Haley so he had to put those thoughts to the side. Which is why now that they’re separated all of those thoughts and feelings are bubbling back up.

The Hardwicke scene is legit one of my FAVORITE Hotchreid moments! I live for it when people mention it in their fics!

This is, in my opinion, an amazing scene to include in any AU when going down the Hotchreid route because I feel like this is the turning point when Hotch sees Reid as more than the "kid" on the team for the first time. Hotch was emotional, angry, and ready to die (or kill) to protect his subordinate. But Reid managed to deescalate the situation all on his own using his best asset: his mind.

I just love the ensuing conversation between them afterward too, when they're in the car. You can interpret it however you need for our Hotchreid love (lol). Like how Hotch says, "What I want, I'm not going to get." Is he referring to Reid?

And then when you make it A/B/O, or Vampire, or whatever, and include instincts and scent and this *need* to impress each other, it just makes the whole thing that much better. I freaking love it.

Alpha Hotch only seeing that this Omega (his Omega) is in danger and he needs to do whatever he can to protect him. Just yes- *chefs kiss.* And when we put in those thoughts you included, where he's been harboring these feelings for Reid for a long time but had them buried deep- and then they just come rushing to the surface the moment he thinks he might lose this Omega.

It all comes crashing down, of course, once the hormones and adrenaline have left his system and they're sitting in the SUV. He's impressed that Reid managed to fix everything, but he's angry at himself for allowing his feelings to get in the way like that. It's a mess. And a good angsty mess that us fanfic authors thrive on <3
