The vigorous and floriferous herbaceous Geranium 'Gerwat' (geranium Rozanne, hardy geranium, cranesbill) is scrambling through the deciduous shrub Berberis thunbergii f. atropurpurea (purple Japanese barberry). What a great combination of dependable plants.

In an effort to make my dream of creating an English style garden here in Austin, Texas come true, I continue my search for plants that are typical English or similar looking substitutes for these. A plant that I have often seen in England and which I dearly love is cranesbill or hardy geranium. I took this photo in England and I believe the variety could be hardy geranium ‘Johnson’s Blue’. I have three questions for you my dear followers: 1. Do you think this hardy geranium is really ‘Johnson’s Blue’? 2. Could you recommend other nice hardy geranium varieties? 3. Is anyone successfully growing cranesbills/hardy geraniums here in Austin or Central Texas? If you would be so kind to answer one or more of my questions, I would be so grateful! To me nothing beats the rural charm of an English cottage garden. I like the casual unpretentious beauty of this relaxed garden style, where flower beds are filled to the brim and plants are allowed to go wild. This garden is a perfect example for that. In the border a blue hardy geranium is used to frame it, various delphiniums, and a tall catmint variety and other perennials are adding hight. In the background is an old a little run down shed embraced by a climbing rose. A tree and two cedar columns are rounding out the scene. Nothing is overdone or stands out, everything in perfect harmony. How do you feel about cottage gardens? Do you like this garden style? Are they your cup of tea or not? The photo was taken last year at Whitcombe House, a private garden that opened its gates to the public for an NGS Open Garden garden event. Bloody cranesbill - #wildflowerwednesday - Although #spring may not be noticeable in some places right now, there’s no reason not to have a wish list for your #gardenbeds. One such #plant is #cranesbill. Many varieties of these #hardygeranium #plants exist and thrive in full sun to shady locations. This particular species (Geranium sanguineum) forms a mound of fine-textured green #foliage with bright magenta-pink #flowers in late spring into summer.
