On a cafe windowsill in the Unorthodox Roasters in Kinross the houseplant Oxalis triangularis subsp. papilionacea (purple leaf false shamrock, purple wood sorrel) was growing. This frost-tender bulbous plant can be kept year-round in a cool conservatory or room producing purple foliage and pale-pink flowers. It requires a moisture retentive but well-drained growing media.

In my friend’s garden Heuchera villosa 'Palace Purple' (alum root) is still producing small pale pink flowers above the smart mounds of metallic bronze-purple leaves. This is a great ground-cover plant especially for the front of a border.

The vigorous and floriferous herbaceous Geranium 'Gerwat' (geranium Rozanne, hardy geranium, cranesbill) is scrambling through the deciduous shrub Berberis thunbergii f. atropurpurea (purple Japanese barberry). What a great combination of dependable plants.

The fine, wiry branches of Verbena officinalis var. grandiflora 'Bampton' (vervain) support a mist of small purplish-pink flowers which contrast well with the dark green-purple leaves. These plants withstand drought well and continue to bloom.

Here a curly kale variety, probably Brassica oleracea (Acephala Group) 'Redbor’ has been used to provide colour and texture to this cottage garden. A great way to integrate edibles with ornamentals in a border.

A vigorous herbaceous perennial Lysimachia ciliata 'Firecracker' (purple loosestrife) will spread to form a large colony especially in a moist soil in full sun or partial shade.
