Lightning cracked in the distance. Harlian leaned over and placed her hands on her knees, panting. She wasn’t sure if the wetness on her head was from the rain or her own sweat. She just wanted to lean over and fall asleep in the wet sand.
“Again.”
She looked up and her eyes met her instructor’s. She glared down at her with her bright hazel eyes, her arms crossed on her chest. Harlian pulled herself up. She stood above her mentor, but that didn’t daunt her. She still met Harlian’s eyes with an intense stare.
“I’ve been doing this for hours,” Harlian panted. “And I’ve almost been electrocuted three times. I’m done.”
“No, you’re not,” the instructor said calmly.
“I’m not?” Harlian said, laughing, “Watch me!”
With that, she turned and began to walk away. She didn’t get five steps away before her instructor called out, “You feel it, Pikspark.”
Harlian froze, tilting her head back to say, “What do you mean?”
“You feel the call,” her instructor said and walked towards her, gently grabbing her shoulder to spin her around. “It’s not that you don’t want to leave. You can’t, now that you’ve begun to understand it. I could see it in your eyes when we first came out here. You felt at home.”
Harlian tried to meet her eyes, but ended up staring at the ground. She was right, and they both knew it. The instructor smiled and patted her shoulder, taking a few steps back.
“You can’t give up this early, Pikspark!” she said, rubbing her hands together and creating a few sparks. “You’re so close to getting it, I can feel it!”
She felt the air around her electrify. She took a deep breath and closed her eyes, focusing her energy. She felt raindrops on her skin, her bare feet in the sand, every single wind breezing past her. She only had a split second as she felt the air spark and rose her hand above her hand.
