it was nice to be happy... for a while
apparently a lot of people misunderstand DA2s ending and the “killing” of Anders in the end. When anders says “Justice and I will be free”, in the end of act 3 he does not mean literally. Justice does not leave him. Anders does not die. The two have been merged for about ten years by now. there is NO way to separate the two.
With Justice, Anders is immune to tranquility and death.
Anders tries to explain it to hawke many times throughout the game (even ive had troubles) since justice is a spirit, there is no form. Anders explains to Hawke “it isn’t as though the two of us have a conversation, i feel his thoughts as my own. not even the greatest scholar could tell you where i end he begins”
Justice comes out when Anders is angry about the injustice of the mages, we see him first come out when we recruit him, when he sees his love Karl has been made tranquil. But he is always there. When Anders says “they will be free”, he means the burden of the injustice of the mages in Kirkwall, but also all throughout Thedas. It is rests heavy on both of them.
Despite his “hilarity” in Awakening, Anders has always been angry, he covered it up with sarcasm and wit. He just never had the opportunity to fight back. He’s always been alone. Then he was finally free thanks to the Warden conscripting him. And he made a name for himself in Kirkwall, making a free clinic making use of his magic where it was desperately needed.
The point im making is Anders and Justice are friends, and they came together to right the wrongs in Thedas, and after the chantry explosion, they are indeed free, regardless of what Hawke did. And Hawke did not “kill” Anders. Justice made sure of that. If you don’t believe me there is a story that (gag) Hepler wrote herself that is pre-kirkwall where he was attacked by a group and survived.
Anders is a survivor.
I always headcanoned that the only reason Anders can be easily killed after chantrisplosion is because by this point he is so deep in depression and guilt that he has little will to live (my general idea is that lucid abominations can survive a lot of beating as long as the host has strong will to live (something to live for) and the spirit has sense of purpose that aligns with the host.) And Justice is too worn down by Kirkwall bs and by identity issues. If you spare them they get better.
Yeah, that’s pretty much my theory-headcanon too. Also, Justice believes in justice. He and Anders did something Bad, and so they must atone for it. He’s willing to accept their deaths as justice for those they killed, and so is Anders. (Also at that point he’s so terrified that he’s strayed from his purpose that he can’t grant them exceptions because that’s just putting selfishness and personal desire over his purpose, isn’t it? He doesn’t trust himself anymore so he tries to go back to looking at things in black and white, like he did back in simpler times. And he’s also worried if they continue to exist the way they are things will just get worse and worse for both of them.)
But like you said, if you spare them they get better. Justice isn’t as worried about their survival being a selfish choice since it was Hawke’s choice to spare them, not his, and so Justice doesn’t feel guilty about finding other ways to atone instead. And Anders slowly regains his will to live and learns to live with what he had to do, with the help and love and support of his lover and/or friends.
My feelingsy-noncanon-headcanon is that Anders and Justice can’t be killed or harmed ever, no matter what, and they’re alive and well and safe and happy. Also they’re immortal. Also they have at least four cats.
The Unexpected Romance - An AntiFenders Fic
“You mages are all the same,” Fenris said.
“What?” Anders asked. “Brilliant and sexy?”
“Don’t make me vomit,” Fenris said.
“There are so many other things I’d rather make you do,” Anders said with a smirk.
A chill ran down Fenris’ spine. He knew that tone, and that look. Never again would he be treated like a mage’s plaything.
He turned on the Abomination, activated his markings, and shoved his hand into Anders’ chest. He did not grab the heart and pull, though it was tempting. There was a sweeter ending to come if he was patient.
Anders’ eyes glowed blue, but there was nothing behind them. It was as if Justice was entranced by the lyrium inside of him. He seemed to be enjoying it a bit too much, though, so Fenris removed his fist and deactivated his markings.
Anders returned, taking a deep breath to steady himself. “Now, you’re definitely flirting,” he said.
“You disgust me,” Fenris said. “I should have reported you to the Templars years ago.”
“Ha!” Anders said. “You wouldn’t even report me to the Templars when Sebastian suggested it!”
“Because of Hawke!” Fenris said.
Years of training as a bodyguard had left Fenris always on alert. He heard footsteps in the distance that Anders couldn’t hear.
“And Hawke doesn’t care anymore,” Fenris said. “She only protected you as long as you did because she thought the Fereldans needed you, but you’ve all but stopped running your clinic so you could focus on your manifesto, and after what you did to that mage girl…”
Cullen kicked down the door to Anders’ clinic. Fenris was actually surprised. He’d expected Cullen to at least try knocking.
Justice still seemed to be in his lyrium coma. There was a brief struggle, where Anders’ eyes flickered from blue to brown, but Justice couldn’t maintain his control over the body.
It was all the proof and all the time that the Knight-Captain needed. He raised his sword high and lopped Anders’ head off with one clean cut.
... Peace. Safety. The Abomination was dead. Fenris’ second and third least favorite mages were dead.
“I thought you’d make him Tranquil,” Fenris admitted, kicking the severed head away from him. “I could have cut his head off.”
“You can’t make an Abomination Tranquil.” Cullen leaned against a crate to catch his breath after running here from the docks. “And we generally encourage people to leave Abominations to the professionals, though I do appreciate you making sure he’d be here when we got here.”
“I kill Abominations all the time with Hawke,” Fenris said. “Not quite weekly but... maybe two or three times a month?”
“Hawke is basically an honorary Templar, at this point.”
“You know Hawke is a—”
“You can’t say it outloud or we all lose our plausible deniability!” Cullen said.
Fenris raised an eyebrow.
“Seriously. There’s a rumor going around that a Seeker is coming. We’ve got the Tranquil working on a staff that will actually pass for a sword. Failing that, we might send her on a vacation to Antiva.”
Fenris nodded a little. “She’d like that.”
Cullen straightened himself. “I should get back to the barracks.”
“Perhaps...” Fenris said, “once you’re off duty, I could buy you a drink? And... talk more about the finer points of Abomination-killing.”
Cullen blushed, but smiled. “It’s a date, then.”
Hey sweet fellow Anders-fans, can anyone recommend me some good tranquil!Anders fanfics? I know it doesn’t make sense because of Justice, but still I just crave that kind of pain, uhh... So hit me up with recs pretty please? The angstier the better, but bonus points for happy ending! Thankss! 💕
what are your thoughts on killing anders (esp for a pro-mage hawke who befriended him)? is it unforgivable or can it be justified? have you ever done it?
Yes I have done it before, like twice LOL. I can understand why a Hawke might kill him; Hawke’s certainly killed people for less, and if Hawke thinks that he deserves to die, Anders is accepting of that fate.
