31st of October 1981
This was the second Halloween a particular little family in Godric Hallows would participate in. Two young parents were eager to dress up their children to make the best of their situation. A little boy with jet-black hair and a little girl with copper red.
“Oh, James, just look at them! They are just too cute!” exclaimed the woman with a grin.
“I don’t know, Lily. Sirius will have a fit when he finds out we dressed up Lia as a cat. You know what he’s going to say, ‘A cat, you dress up the poor child as a cat instead of, I don’t know, a dog? You know as her favorite uncle.”
The woman just shook her head, letting out a light-hearted scoff, paying no attention to her husband's little act, focusing on the children in front of her, “I wouldn’t say that little Lia’s favorite uncle is Padfoot. Moony seems like he can give Sirius a run for his money. Isn’t that right, Camellia? You love Uncle Moony?”
As if to answer her mother’s question, the little girl squealed and clapped her hands in amusement. She looked back up at her husband with a triumphant smirk.
“Do you want to bet on it, Potter?” He looked back at his daughter and his wife, a smirk of his forming.
“You forget, Lily flower, that you are a Potter too, for better or worse.” She got up from the floor to kiss her husband before saying, “Look at you, being right for the first time.”
“Oh, you are a cheeky bugger, aren’t you?” Pulling his wife into a loving kiss.
As if, on cue, both kids decided now would be the perfect time to start babbling, just cause the adults to pull away from each other. The parents admired their children, small and innocent, with no knowledge of what was happening, no knowledge of the war, nothing. Just two babies dressed up for the occasion, conversing little with their gurgles, babbles, and laughter. The young parents held each other with bittersweet smiles on their faces.
“Well,” breathed out James, “How about we whip up some dinner while we wait for the others to arrive?” Looking at Lily, he watched as she shook her head with a slight amusement reaching her eyes.
“You, cooking? Certainly not, especially not after you try to burn the house down.” Offended by such an accusation, James put a hand over his heart as if he were wounded.
“My wife, the mother of my two beautiful children, accusing me of burning the house down. At least I didn’t start the fire of the cookie incident; that was Sirius, and you know it!” He countered.
“Whatever you say, love, whatever you say.”
With dinner on the stove, the hours are ticking by. “When do you think the lot will drop by?” James wondered, looking at the clock and his wife.
“I am not quite sure. Sirius said that he would be dropping by around seven before the kids are put to sleep, but it is already half past seven.” She responded, biting her lip. She ask quietly, “Do you think he ran into trouble?”
“I don’t think so, but you know Sirius might be running late with the costume he had planned for the kids.” James tried to reassure his wife. Turning to the two children on the floor blabbing to each other hearing a slight distinction of their words, mixtures of 'pa-foo' and 'ooony'. Lily looked at the pair with hinted sadness before turning back to her husband with his eyes on the children.
“I wish things could have been different, James. I wish that we don’t have to hide, to be afraid. They don’t understand the weight of their lives. They’re just children.” She said with a slight exasperation.
James Potter knew this feeling, and he felt it when he woke up and looked at himself in the mirror and at Lily when he looked at his children. The surface never left. It sat in his stomach and would make way to strangle his throat. He felt that it was his fault in the situation that they were in. He thought that he was the one to blame.
“I know love, but best that they don’t know and better that they can be kids. They are too young to know, but let’s hope that war ends soon. If so, they would never have to know and live their little lives peacefully.” He responded hopefully to reassure his wife and calm her down.
“ We can hope,” Lily stated, more so to reassure herself more than anything.
The thing about hope is that it can do so much. A light aimed to fill the darkness and provide the little warmth needed to feel its comfort. This little family had hope, but the world, the war, their enemies, and many other factors used this hope as a beacon to hunt them down.
On October 31, 1981, tragedy fell upon a small family in Godric Hollows. The parents of a pair of twins were murdered in hopes of saving their children. Their efforts, however, were not in vain as the cries of two children, a boy and a girl, no older than a year old were heard. Harry James Potter and Camila Marlene Potter were left orphaned. Hope seemed lost to some, but for others, the rumors of Lord Voldemort’s downfall made it seem that the war was over.

𝕴 𝖓𝖔𝖜 𝖍𝖆𝖉 three friends: Hermione, Harry, and Ronald who I now called Ron. We studied together, ate together, and visited Hagrid together. We worked together in Herbology (unless I worked alone). Ron and I had a mutual polite friendship. I still hadn't forgiven him for his harsh words with Hermione, though I knew in the end they were going to be great friends.
Once it started getting colder, Quidditch season started. Hagrid was defrosting brooms every morning and if I didn't have a class, I would bundle myself up in my jacket and boots, and brave the cold to help him. It wasn't easy work, but I felt satisfied every time that I set a defrosted broom aside. At least, until my fingers started to go numb.
I started going into the forest, speaking and learning with the centaurs, only once a week now. It was just to cold for me to go more than once.
One of the good things about having Harry and Ron as friends was that there was more laughter now. With Hermione, it was mostly studying, though I would make a few jokes, but Ron loved to make jokes, and it made my life a bit more delightful.
Three other friends that I really hadn't expected to make were Fred and George Weasley, and Lee Jordan. They wanted to know if I was smarter than Hermione, and as a challenge, they would give me a random spell they were learning in the third year, and see if I could do it. Nine times out of ten I was able to do it- after a couple of tries. If I couldn't do it, I practiced it on the side and when I finally mastered it, I would show them.
Fred and George were also on the Quidditch team and sometimes they invited me to come down after their practices, and we would race on the brooms. I loved flying, probably something I had gotten from James side of the genes, considering he had been a seeker.
My extra tutoring with Professor Flitwick was helping me learn more in class, and soon I was even ahead of Hermione. Even though I knew there wasn't really a competition, I wasn't really competing against Hermione, I had this rushing feeling that I had to know everything. And with Fred, George, and Lee's challenges, I was moving farther ahead than everyone. At least in Transfiguration and Charms.
All in all, everything was going very well. Well, except for Astronomy. I wasn't doing horribly, just an EE instead of an O grade. But that was a sore in my thumb. I hated not having all O's. I supposed I'd just have to work harder.
Everyone was getting excited for the first Quidditch game of the season. I was hyped as well. It had been leaked- though I'd known long before- that Harry was the new Gryffindor Seeker. There were mixed opinions about this new conundrum.
At the same time, I was very worried about the upcoming match because of a concerning vision that I had seen part of. I was foreseeing the broomstick that Harry was riding trying to chuck him off. Sure, in my vision Harry managed to stay on until the broom stabilized, but still, there was always the off chance that my vision wasn't right, right?
The morning of the Quidditch match, I left the Hufflepuff table to sit with the Gryffindors.
"You've got to eat some breakfast." I said to Harry, sliding him over a plate of bacon as I sat down. He just looked at it. He looked like he was going to be sick.
"I don't want anything." He said, putting his hand on the plate like he was going to push it away but didn't.
"Just a bit of toast." Hermione tried to persuade him next.
"I'm not hungry." Harry said.
"Harry you need you're strength. Seekers are always the ones who get clobbered by the other team." Seamus said, plopping ketchup on his sausages. I wrinkled my nose. What horrible taste buds.
"Thanks Seamus." Harry said dejectedly, but I laughed, hoping Harry would lighten up with humor. I grabbed my own plate of eggs and sausage and ate in front of Harry, telling him all the while about what he was missing out on. He finally choked down some toast and I felt that I had done a good job with it.
Harry soon left after to join the team. Fred walked by with George and Oliver Wood. He looked over and winked at me. I rolled my eyes and shouted, "good luck." to them. They didn't need it, they were gong to win. Of that much I was sure.
Hermione, Ron, Seamus, Neville, Dean, and I all walked out to the Quidditch stands. We were up nearly 300 feet in the air, probably higher. We sat on a wooden bench, clutching our scarves and hats around us to keep warm. My yellow and black Hufflepuff colors stood out among the gold and scarlet of Gryffindor.
I watched the players walk out onto the field. Madam Hooch was talking to them and I watched Oliver shake hands with Marcus Flint. Oliver was handsome, whereas Marcus looked a bit like a troll. Actually, thinking about it, he looked like someone that I'd known in elementary school. I think his name had been Michael or something like that.
They mounted their brooms and Madam Hooch tossed the Quaffle in the air, starting the game. The minute Angelina Johnson took the ball, Lee was jabbering away into his magical microphone in the commentator's/teacher's box.
"And the Quaffle is taken immediately by Angelina Johnson of Gryffindor- what an excellent Chaser that girl is, and rather attractive, too- "
"JORDAN!"
"Sorry, Professor." Jordan said dismissively. I giggled. I loved Jordan's commentary. It was good to have humor in such a fierce, tense, competitive sport.
"And she's really belting along up there, a neat pass to Alicia Spinnet, a good find of Oliver Wood's, last year only a reserve- back to Johnson and- no, the Slytherins have taken the Quaffle, Slytherin Captain Marcus Flint gains the Quaffle and off he goes- Flint flying like an eagle up there- he's going to sc- no, stopped by an excellent move by Gryffindor Keeper Wood and the Gryffindors take the Quaffle- that's Chaser Katie Bell of Gryffindor there, nice dive around Flint, off up the field and- OUCH- that must have hurt, hit in the back of the head by a Bludger- Quaffle taken by the Slytherins- that's Adrian Pucey speeding off toward the goal posts, but he's blocked by a second Bludger- sent his way by Fred or George Weasley, can't tell which-nice play by the Gryffindor Beater anyway, and Johnson back in possession of the Quaffle, a clear field ahead and off she goes-"
Suddenly Lee's voice seemed to disappear and a different voice came into my head. "Keep an eye on Quirrell, won't you Severus?"
I gave a start, hearing the words in my head. It was Dumbledore's voice. I wasn't exactly sure who he was talking to, but I looked over at the teacher's stands. They were all too far away to make out if Quirrell was doing anything or not.
Who was Severus? It had to be the first name of one of the teachers. I thought about the name long and hard, trying to put a face to the name. Hadn't Dad mentioned the name Severus in one of his letters to me?
Ron and Hermione's voices broke my thought process, "Hagrid!"
I glanced up and smiled at Hagrid who was trying to sit down on the small benches. I scooted over, bumping into Dean, and Hermione also scooted over, closer to me. Ron scooted the other way so Hagrid was between the two of them.
"Bin watchin' from me hut," Hagrid said, patting a large pair of binoculars. "But it isn't the same as bein' in the crowd. No sign of the snitch yet, eh?"
Ron went to answer him and I tapped Hagrid on the arm, "Can I borrow the binoculars for a moment?"
He handed them to me and I looked over at the teachers stands. Snape looked tense and bored at the same time. His black hair curtained his face so that he had a good view of Quirrell out of the corner of his eye. He was the one whose first name was Severus. Severus. Severus Snape. I smiled, it had a nice ring to it. Then, I got back to business.
McGonagall was sitting closely to Lee in case she ever needed to grab the mic out of his hands. Quirrell looked nervous, his eyes darting around. Dumbledore wasn't even in the stands so I wasn't entirely sure if he was even talking about now or later. Or for what. Why did someone- Professor Snape- need to keep an eye on Quirrell? Did Dumbledore suspect Quirrell had gone after the stone? If so, why hadn't he done anything about it? What did Dumbledore know?
"Slytherin in possession," Lee continued, "Chaser Pucey ducks two bludgers, two Weasleys, and Chaser Bell, and speeds toward the- wait a moment- was that the snitch?"
Adrian dropped the Quaffle, distracted by the flash of gold that flitted past his ear. Harry must've seen it as well because he dived down after it. The Slytherin chaser, I forget his name, chased after the snitch as well. I clutched Hermione's arm as Harry gained on the snitch until-
WHAM! I yelled out with the rest of the Gryffindors in rage as Marcus Flint flew in front of Harry's broom. Harry smashed into him, and his broom spun off course. I could tell Harry was holding on for dear life. Or maybe I could just feel it.
"Foul!" The Gryffindors around me were screaming.
Madam Hooch was speaking very angrily with Flint but I looked away, distracted by Dean Thomas who was shouting, "Send him off ref! Red Card!"
"What are you talking about, Dean?" Ron asked, confused though I knew exactly what Dean was talking about.
"Red card!" Dean spit out furiously, waving his hands like a maniac. "In soccer you get shown the red card and you're out of the game."
"But this isn't soccer, Dean!" Ron said, exasperated. Ron had a point too. After all, this was Quidditch. The player's could get away with murder and they'd still be on the team- at least until after the game was over. You couldn't just have the players off the team (unless, you know, the games went on for longer than a day). Hagrid started arguing for Dean's side, but I listened in to Lee instead.
"So- after that obvious and disgusting bit of cheating-"
"Jordan!" Professor McGonagall growled.
"I mean, after that open and revolting foul-"
"Jordan, I'm warning you-"
I couldn't help but laugh at Lee and Professor McGonagall, even though I knew something even worse was coming up for Harry. I kept darting my eyes upward, trying to see when it would happen. Somehow, I knew that I would know before it happened.
"All right, all right. Flint nearly kills the Gryffindor Seeker, which could happen to anyone, I'm sure, so a penalty to Gryffindor, taken by Spinnet, who puts it away, no trouble, and we continue play, Gryffindor in possession." Lee says sarcastically and I grin, though I kept my laughs in this time.
I kept my eyes on Harry now, the minute he was going to dodge that bludger. . . and he dodged the bludger. I tightened my grip on Hermione's arm. He looked like he was doing Muggle bull riding, just on a really skinny bull. It kept bouncing him up and down. Looking through the binoculars, I saw his knuckles were white from gripping it so hard.
Hagrid grabbed the binoculars from my hands and looked through them, pointed up towards Harry. "Dunno what Harry thinks he's doing. If I didn't know better, I'd say he'd lost control of his broom. . .but he can't have. . ."
I took the binoculars back and watched as his broom started doing barrel rolls, over and over until finally, Harry fell, hanging from the broom with only one hand.
"Did something happen when Flint block him?" Seamus asked in a loud whisper.
"Really need to work on your whispering skills Seamus." I retorted out of the side of my mouth.
"Can't have. Can't nothing interfere with a broomstick except powerful Dark magic- no kid could do that to a Nimbus Two Thousand." Hagrid said, his voice shaken.
Hermione grabbed the binoculars from my hands and I gritted my teeth. Didn't anyone understand that there was this word called 'please'?
"What are you doing?" Ron asked, looking very gray-faced.
"I knew it," Hermione gasped, "Snape-look."
Ron looked through the binoculars and passed them back to Hermione who handed them back to me. I pressed them quickly to my eyes and looked at the teachers stands. Snape was muttering under his breath, his eyes locked on Harry's broom. I moved the binoculars up where Quirrell was also sitting, in the same pose as Snape. His eyes, locked on Harry and his mouth moving. Obviously, he wasn't stuttering.
"He's doing something- jinxing the broom." Hermione said, apparently not having noticed Quirrell.
"What should we do?" Ron moaned.
"Leave it to me." Hermione said, squirming her way past people in their seats.
Fred and George were now circling below Harry, hoping to catch him if he fell as every time they'd tried to get up to him, his broom had flown higher into the air. Flint grabbed the Quaffle, scoring five times, but no one seemed to have noticed, everyone's eyes fixed on Harry's.
Why weren't the Professors doing anything? Professor McGonagall, Flitwick, Sprout, Sinistra. Why did none of them try anything? Only Professor Snape was doing something and he obviously was fighting Quirrell's curse. But still, why wasn't an adult doing anything? Why was it in mine and Hermione's hands? We were eleven years old! Blimey the way Wizarding school works!
I found myself following Hermione, and we ran down the steps, and then through the inner-workings of the stands. There was some uneven pathways and holes, and we had to maneuver ourselves through it quickly. Not to mention ducking under the beams that held up the stands. I really hoped they were magically reinforced because they looked rather unstable.
"Hermione!" I called after her. She just quickened her pace, and I couldn't say a word about it possibly being Quirrell, because I was gasping for breath as we ran, sprinting towards the other end where the teachers stands were.
Finally, we were under the teacher stands, directly below Snape. Hermione pulled out her wand and pointed it at Snape's robes. Blue flames leaped upon his clothing and I jumped back. I pointed my wand up towards Quirrell's robes, and lit them on fire while she wasn't watching.
I heard Quirrell yelp and Hermione was scooping the blue flames off of Snape's robes into a jar and then scooped the flames off Quirrell, shooting me an annoyed look. I stuck my tongue out at her behind her back. I had to cover all the bases and really, I could've scooped the fire up myself!
We hurried back to where we had been sitting before, this time I was in the lead. Hermione and I stopped, looking up to see if our job had worked out.
Harry was racing down towards the Quidditch pitch and then he pulled up into a clean straight wave. Jumping to his feet, he rode the broom like a surf-board reaching out for the golden-snitch. He moved his foot the wrong way and he fell forward, tumbling forward and doing multiple somersaults on the ground.
He swallowed the snitch, I thought calmly as the crowd gasped in horror and shock.
He had tumbled forward to where he was now sitting up. He held his hands in front of his mouth. Hermione clapped her hands to her mouth. I watched, amused, as he coughed up the golden snitch, waving it around, and getting to his feet.
Gryffindor had won one hundred and seventy points to sixty.
Meanwhile, Harry, Ron, Hermione and I were in Hagrid's hut where Hagrid was making tea, bustling around his tiny kitchen pulling out mugs and a kettle.
"It was Snape." Ron said to Harry, "Hermione and I saw him. He was cursing your broomstick, muttering, he wouldn't take his eyes off you."
"Rubbish." Hagrid said, and I privately agreed with him. "Why would Snape do somethin' like that?"
Harry, Ron, Hermione, and I looked at each other. I knew, of course, Harry's theory about Snape trying to get past the three-headed dog on Halloween night. I, of course, knowing that Snape had actually stopped Quirrell from doing so, kept silent. I wasn't about to tell them since I knew (somehow for some reason) that they shouldn't know yet.
"I found out something about him. He tried to get past that three-headed dog on Halloween. It bit him. We think he was trying to steal whatever it's guarding." Harry said, after exchanging a look with Ron and Hermione.
Hagrid dropped the teapot. It smashed into bits on the floor, sending blue and black pottery pieces everywhere. I leapt up and pointed my wand at it. "Reparo."
"How do you know about Fluffy?" Hagrid asked, not bothering to pick up the tea pot. I levitated it back onto the table and then picked it up, and went to the sink to fill it back up with hot water. I stuck another tea bag into it, disposing of the tea bag that Fang was sniffing on the floor.
"Fluffy?" Ron asked, sounding revolted.
"That thing has a name?" Hermione squealed.
I set the kettle down to boil. I kept my face, facing away from them. There were multiple flashes happening in my mind again and I squeezed my eyes shut as a burning pain echoed in the place where my locket was set against my skin. Harry looking in the mirror, seeing our family. The red stone again. A dead unicorn. Firenze the centaur, carrying Harry on his back. (Oh, the centaurs weren't going to be happy about that). The night sky, Mars was looking bright. (That was a bad sign).
"Yeah- he's mine- bought him off a Greek chappie I met in the pub las' year- I lent him to Dumbledore to guard the-" Hagrid broke off quickly and I pulled the kettle off the stove, filling the mugs with boiling tea.
"Yes?" Harry asked, obviously eager to find out what Hagrid was going to say. I knew it was the red stone. . . but what was the stone called? I couldn't just tell them it was a red stone. The red stone could be anything: A ruby, dragon stone, dragon glass. . . anything! Things we didn't even know the names to! I wondered if there was a book of red things around.
"Now, don't ask me anymore. That's top secret, that is." Hagrid said gruffly, quickly taking a sip out of his large mug.
"But Snape's trying to steal it!" Harry said, trying to sound convincing. But really, I thought, eager as I was for adventure, it really wasn't our business, was it?
"Rubbish. Snape's a Hogwarts teacher, he'd do nothing' of the sort." Hagrid said, brushing off Harry's concerns.
"So why did he just try and kill Harry?" Hermione asked Hagrid defensively, "I know a jinx when I see one, Hagrid, I've read all about them! You've got to keep eye contact, and Snape wasn't blinking at all, I saw him."
I interrupted before Hagrid could. "Quirrell also wasn't taking his eyes off Harry, Hermione. How do we know that it wasn't Quirrell?"
"I'm tellin' yeh, yer both wrong!" Hagrid said before Hermione could answer me. "I don' know why Harry's broom acted like that, but Snape wouldn try an' kill a student! Neither would Quirrell fer that matter. Now, listen to me, all four of yeh- yer meddlin' in things that don' concern yeh. It's dangerous. You forget that dog, an' you forget what it's guardin', that's between Professor Dumbledore an' Nicholas Flamel-"
"Aha! So there's someone called Nicholas Flamel involved, is there?" Harry said, smiling triumphantly.
I shook my head, turning away. Hagrid looked furious with himself.

𝕴 𝖜𝖊𝖓𝖙 𝖋𝖔𝖗 a walk that night, whether because I'd seen a vision of Harry, Ron, Hermione, and Neville going to the trophy room, or whether because I just wanted a walk, I wasn't entirely sure. Perhaps both.
I found myself in the trophy room long before them, around ten o'clock. I spent my time looking around at the different trophies. There were many here for names that I didn't know, though occasionally there was a name that might share the last name of a student at Hogwarts.
A few trophies were dedicated to Dumbledore. I'd heard that he had broken every record at Hogwarts. . .for different classes. I wasn't entirely sure what they pertained to though, and also wondered if I could break any records.
There were also Quidditch trophies, and I found Minerva McGonagall on a shield. So she'd been a Chaser? That was fascinating, and also rather unexpected. She didn't look like the type that might enjoy Quidditch.
There was also a special service trophy that was dedicated to a boy named Tom Riddle. The name seemed familiar, but I was sure I'd never heard it before.
Then, I heard quiet footsteps, and I crept into the shadows, slightly unsure of who was going to walk through the door- Filch or the group of four.
It was the group of four. Harry and Ronald looked excited. Hermione looked haughty. Neville looked scared.
"Hello." I said brightly, stepping out of the shadows.
The four of them jumped. Neville clutched onto Hermione and Hermione grabbed Ronald's arm for the briefest second before letting go quickly. Ronald rubbed his arm self-consciously.
"We ought to go." I muttered, quieter than I previously had. "Draco's not coming."
"How would you know?" Ronald asked, rather rudely I thought.
I rolled my eyes, but didn't answer as another voice floated through the room, "Sniff around, my sweet, they might be lurking in a corner."
I didn't hesitate, striding past the four of them, and out of the room. Harry and the others were soon following me. I wondered momentarily why I was willing to leave my own brother to face Filch's wrath, but I felt rather in a bad mood. Funny really, I was the one who had gone looking for them.
"This way!" Harry mouthed to us, leading the way. I felt more comfortable this way, following my brother. He was a natural leader, I could tell, even if he was only eleven.
I could hear Mr. Filch getting nearer, and my nerves seemed to tighten. Neville let out a noise of fright, something between a squeal and a groan, and tried to take off running. Honestly! He should know that him and his own feet weren't a good match. He tripped, grabbing Ronald around the waist so that the two of them crashed into a suit of armor.
I sighed, mostly in frustration, but it was inaudible over the clashing and crashing of the metal armor as it clattered against the marble ground.
"RUN!" Harry's voice made me jump, and I bolted in the same direction as them. Stupid really, I could've taken a different route and ended up at the Hufflepuff Common room, and away from this craziness.
We ducked through a tapestry, finding ourselves in the same hallway of the Charms classroom. I knew that the teachers had their bedrooms in their offices, and I lifted a finger to my lips as we caught our breath.
"I think we've lost him." Harry said, panting against the wall.
"I-told-you." Hermione said, clutching her stomach. I too had a stich in my side. "I- told- you."
"We've got to get back to Gryffindor Tower." Ronald said and then motioned to me with his hand. "The bloody hell are you going to do now?"
I raised a delicate eyebrow and said in a haughty tone, "I'm going to go back to my Hufflepuff common room, that's what I'm going to do."
Hermione ignored us, looking at Harry. "Malfoy tricked you. You realize that, don't you? He was never going to meet you- Filch knew someone was going to be in the trophy room, Malfoy must have tipped him off."
"Of course that's what he did." I said calmly. "You don't actually think he was going to duel you fairly and risk his own neck, did you?"
Harry said nothing about that and instead said, "Let's go."
However, Peeves decided to come out of a classroom doorknob at that moment. I sighed again. Tonight was going to be a long night. He let out a squeal of delight.
"Shut up, Peeves- please- you'll get us thrown out." Harry begged.
I rolled my eyes. We weren't going to get thrown out for being caught out of bed in the middle of the night, yeesh. We'd get a detention and maybe twenty points taken away and that was that.
"Wandering around at midnight, Ickle Firsties? Tut, tut, tut. Naughty, naughty, you'll get caughty." Peeves teased.
"Not if you don't give us away. Peeves, please." Harry begged.
Why was he begging with a poltergeist? They loved chaos. They feasted on chaos.
"Should tell Filch, I should. It's for your own good, you know." Peeves said, swining his body upside down, looking through his legs.
Ronald had reached the end of his tether, reaching up to take a swipe at Peeves, "Get out of the way."
I pinched the bridge of my nose. "STUDENTS OUT OF BED! STUDENTS OUT OF BED DOWN IN THE CHARMS CORRIDOR!"
We ducked under Peeves, and bolted for the end of the corridor for the door that was locked.
"This is it!" Ronald moaned, pushing helplessly at the door. "We're done for! This is the end!"
"Rather dramatic aren't you?" I muttered, raising my wand. "Move over. Alohomora!"
There was a clicking noise and the door swung up. We hurried in. I stayed as close to the wall as possible. I supposed this was a necessary part of the night, was it? Lovely. The others- excluding Neville- had their faces towards the door. I stared into the eyes of the three headed dog warily.
It had been asleep, it's head still on the floor, snoring. We'd taken it by surprise, probably the only reason we weren't being ripped into pieces yet. Now, it was blinking it's eyes open, startled about the sudden intrusion. Well, we might be ripped into pieces now.
"Hey, Hermione." I said rather weakly. She was closest to the door. I reached my hand along, groping along the wall, trying to find the doorknob.
"Shan't say nothing if you don't say please." Peeves was teasing Filch outside the door.
I'd much rather get a detention than die.
"All right- please." Filch said, sounding exasperated and desperate.
"NOTHING! Ha haaa! Told you I wouldn't say nothing if you didn't say please! Ha ha! Haaaaa!"
"Fuck you Peeves!" Filch screamed after him.
"Hermione!" I said more urgently, moving my hand behind me, searching for the doorknob as the dog started to get to its feet. I looked down just briefly at the trapdoor.
"He thinks this door is locked. I think we'll be okay- get off, Neville! What?" Harry asked and sounded exasperated, he turned to see what Neville wanted. My hand finally found the doorknob, and I thrusted the door open, and Neville and I bolted immediately.
It took a moment for Ronald, Hermione, and my brother to realize what was happening, but when they did, they sprinted from the room, Harry slamming the door shut behind him. I locked it with another tap of my wand, catching my breath.
The hell did Dumbledore have this door locked on a simple Alohomora charm? There should be a lot more spells on this door. Difficult spells, stuff only fully trained wizards could get into.
And then the other four were taking off, running back down the hall again, and without thinking, I followed.
We ended up at the Gryffindor common room. I shook my head, feeling rather desperate to get away from the craziness, and sprinted down a different hallway at that moment, ending up at the Hufflepuff Common room door. I knocked the pattern rather hurriedly and collapsed in a chair in the middle of the room.
It took some time to catch my breath and when I did, I was able to think clearly. The dog was obviously guarding something. . .but what?
As though in answer, there was a flash in my head and the image of the glistening ruby red stone on the stairs appeared.
Well, I supposed that was answer enough.

𝕳𝖊𝖗𝖒𝖎𝖔𝖓𝖊 𝖜𝖆𝖘 𝖋𝖚𝖗𝖎𝖔𝖚𝖘 the next afternoon when we were studying in the library. I was working on a homework assignment for Astronomy. It was like trying to complete an English assignment when all you knew was French.
Hermione nearly slammed her books down and pulled out a chair rather angrily. Madam Pince's head popped up behind the checkout counter, glaring.
"Not such a good morning, Hermione?" I asked lightly, dipping my quill in the ink well and started to write the Astronomy essay
"Harry got a broomstick for breaking the rules!" Hermione seethed, having just a bit of difficulty lowering her voice. If she didn't hurry up and quiet down, Madam Pince was going to kick us out of the library. "Why was he rewarded for breaking the rules?"
"Because Professor McGonagall favors the Quidditch team. She wants to win and she hopes that Harry having a nice broom and being a good player will help. Not to mention that, well. . .he's Harry Potter, Hermione." I whispered quietly, pausing after writing the title of the essay.
I said this lightly in tone and heavy in heart.
"Whatever." Hermione scoffed. I ducked my head as she ranted. At least the Astronomy was becoming clearer.
At least we didn't get kicked out of the library.

𝕳𝖆𝖑𝖑𝖔𝖜𝖊𝖊𝖓 𝖒𝖔𝖗𝖓𝖎𝖓𝖌, 𝕴 woke up late, and had to run to make it to Charms on time. I sat in my customary seat on the left side of the classroom. It was the only class that all four houses had together. Ravenclaws and Gryffindors were on the right side, Slytherins and Hufflepuffs on the left.
I had stayed up late writing letters to Dad and Trang. I'd only written her two letters, and they took a long time to get to her. First, I had to send her letter to dad, who would then have to mail it through Muggle post. Then, it took forever for the letter to get to America, and then she had to write back, and then dad had to send it to me by Owl post since she thought I was at home.
We were working on the flight charm today in class, and we were split up into pairs. I got partnered with Susan Bones which I was happy about. Looking across the aisle, I saw that Hermione was paired with Ronald. She was probably really upset about that. No, not just upset. She looked absolutely pissed and had assumed her normal haughty expression. Perhaps they'd had a quarrel? Oh yes, right, the broomstick.
"Now, don't forget the nice wrist movement we've been practicing! Swish and flick, remember, swish and flick. And saying the magic words properly is very important too- never forget Wizard Baruffio, who said 's' instead of 'f' and found himself on the floor with a buffalo on his chest!" Professor Flitwick said, addressing the class.
I raised my wand and concentrated on imagining the feather rising into the air. Then, I practiced the wand movement without saying anything. "Wingardium Leviosa." I murmured to myself. I closed my eyes, making sure that my wand was in the correct position, and imagined the feather rising into the air once more.
"Wingardium Leviosa!" I cried, swishing and flicking. The feather lifted into the air like it was supposed to. I concentrated hard on letting it rise higher into the air.
"Well done," Professor Flitwick said, clapping. "Miss Kane has done it! Five points to Hufflepuff!"
I felt proud, my cheeks flushing because I hated recognition.
"You're saying it wrong!" Hermione snapped across the room. "It's Wing-gar-dium Levi-o-sa, make the 'gar' nice and long."
"You do it, then, if you're so clever." Ronald snarled and I frowned, feeling quite put off with his attitude. How rude, really. She was just trying to help.
I watched across the aisle as Hermione rolled up the sleeves of her Hogwarts robes, and then with a clean flick of her wand said, "Wingardium Leviosa!"
Her feather, like mine, floated upwards into the air and Professor Flitwick clapped his hands, delighted with her progress, chuckling, awarding her five points to Gryffindor. Ronald was in a horrible mood for the rest of class.
I gave Hermione a thumbs up, and then turned to Susan who was having some difficulty with the spell. At least she let me help her.
After class, I followed the other Hufflepuffs out of the classroom, and then ran to catch up with Hermione. She was nearing Ronald, Harry, Seamus, and Dean. I heard Ron say, "It's Levi-O-sa not levio-sa. She's a nightmare, honestly."
Hermione banged into Harry's shoulder as she passed. My blood boiled.
"I think she heard you." Harry said, quietly.
"So? She must've noticed she's got no friends." Ronald continued rather stupidly.
I ran up to him and kicked him in the back of his legs. He dropped his books. "Jerk. She's the brightest witch of her age, I notice you weren't able to make your feather fly. Lay off, will ya?" My words were childish, but I didn't say anything to take them back.
Ronald gold-fished mouthed as I stormed away from them, hoping to catch up with Hermione. I couldn't find her anywhere, and I couldn't continue to look for her because my next class was potions and Professor Snape was notorious for taking points away from late-comers. Unless they were Slytherins, of course.
I didn't see her for the rest of the day, and when I saw Lavender Brown and Parvati Patil walking into the Great Hall, I hurried up to them, knowing that they were Hermione's roommates. Surely, they knew where she was.
"Hey, have either of you seen Hermione Granger?" I asked, shifting from one foot to the other in anticipation.
They looked at each other with the air of two girls who loved to gossip. I already felt annoyed and neither of them had opened their mouths yet.
"She's been in the bathroom, crying all afternoon." Lavender said in a hushed whisper.
"That Ron made her really upset." Parvati said in a sad whisper.
"Thanks," I said, and dashed off towards my table. I grabbed a napkin and loaded it with muffins and cookies and stuffed it in my bag. I grabbed two flasks of pumpkin juice, and raced back out of the Great Hall, almost knocking over Professor Snape.
"Watch where you're going Kane!" He shouted after me, and I lifted a hand in acknowledgment, but didn't look back at him, and didn't say anything either.
I entered the girls bathroom and heard faint sniffling noise. "Hermione?" I asked, uncertainly, "Hey, do you want to come on out for a second? I brought food?"
The stall door clicked open, and Hermione came out, red-eyes. Her bag was tossed next to the wall. I handed her a muffin before sitting down on the floor, my back to the wall.
"You know," I said, munching on a cookie. "Before I came here, I only had three friends and eventually, three became one. One moved and one was much younger than me. I was in all advanced classes in the Muggle world, and people thought I was to smart and didn't want to be friends with me. I was a know-it-all, and a strange one at that for. . .for reasons. I don't have many friends here either." I thought about my wording. "Any super true friends anyways, besides you."
Hermione sniffled and took a bite of her muffin, sliding down the wall to sit next to me. "I just, well you said I was going to make friends over Halloween and I guess I just thought I could be friends with the great Harry Potter. Perhaps that was a bit selfish of me." She wiped her eyes and then we laughed.
I saw a flash of an image at that moment. It was an ugly creature- a troll. Professor Quirrell had let it into the school for some reason. I ignored the image, it didn't pertain to us.
"I don't think it's selfish." I said quietly, brushing my fingers together in an attempt to wipe away cookie crumbs. "I wanted to be friends with him too."
More than friends. I thought privately.
"How did you decide that it didn't matter?" Hermione asked, crumpling the muffin wrapper in her hand.
I stayed quiet for a moment before pulling out the flask of pumpkin juice. "I never really did." I finally whispered and took a sip. "but I knew, perhaps because I'm a little religious, but I knew that if it was in the cards, fate, destiny, whatever you want to call it- Harry and I would become friends eventually or not at all. But, really, I think there's a much higher probability for you becoming friends with them than me. But that's not really a personal opinion."
Suddenly I heard huge stomping feet and Hermione and I looked at each other. The troll, I thought, but I hadn't see the troll entering the bathroom. I stayed on the floor a little longer, trying to look into the future. This was so stupid! I stuffed the flask into my bag.
"Do you think that's Halloween entertainment?" Hermione asked. Her voice quavered with fright and she was cringing back against the wall, on her feet, squatting.
I didn't answer, concentrating on the image. The troll was going to come into this bathroom.
"We need to leave, now." I said, jumping to my feet, grabbing my bag, and hurrying to the door. I quickly backed up, running the other way. We were too late.
Hermione and I backed away towards the wall. "If we wait for it to come closer, we can climb under the stalls and get out the door." She said, thinking it through.
No, I thought, pulling my wand out though I knew no spells to fight the thing, Harry and Ron were going to lock us in. At that moment, I heard the key lock in the bathroom door.
The troll swung at us and both Hermione and I screamed. Glass shattered and water spattered from the broken sinks. We backed up as far as we possibly could. The troll kept shattering sinks. I held my wand out, thinking of any possible spell that would work against it. But we hadn't been taught offensive spells yet!
Harry and Ronald ran into the bathroom at that moment.
"Confuse it!" Harry said desperately to Ronald, and he bent down and seized a tap, and threw it hard against the wall.
The troll stopped a couple of feet away from us. It looked around slowly, trying to find the source of the noise. It then turned and went for Harry instead.
I had to admire my brother for a second. Stupid, but brave. You just had to like him.
"Oy, pea-brain!" Ronald yelled, throwing a metal pipe at the troll. The troll turned and went after him instead.
"Come on, run, run!" Harry shouted at Hermione and me. Hermione wouldn't move though, as I tugged her arm, looking over my shoulder at the troll. Hermione had pressed herself harder against the wall. Then her legs gave out, and she fell to the floor. The troll turned towards us and I hit the deck as it swung its club towards me. My chin glanced off the floor, and I hissed through my teeth at the pain.
Harry then took off running and fastened his arms around the troll's neck from behind. I watched in shock as his wand went up the Troll's nose and I winced in hypothetical pain. My hand shot up to grab my nose, rubbing it. The troll howled with real pain, twisting around, trying to get Harry off of his back.
Ronald suddenly pulled out his wand and shouted, "Wingardium Leviosa!"
The club flew out of the troll's hand and I looked at Ronald in surprise. Then it turned over and Ronald lowered his wand and it fell on the Troll's head. The troll fell on his face, stunned. Harry and I got to our feet. Hermione still wasn't able to. I wondered if she had gone into shock.
Then Hermione asked, "Is it- dead?"
"No." I answered, quite sure of my response.
"I think it's just been knocked out." Harry said, stepping over the wands arm. Harry pulled the wand out of the troll's nose and I looked away, disgusted.
There was a slamming noise and loud footsteps made us look up. I realized now, before I saw them, that Professors McGonagall, Snape, and Quirrell were going to come around the corner. Harry and Ronald had made a lot of noise, throwing things. Hermione and I had screamed as well. Quirrell took one look at the troll, gave what I thought was a fake whimper, and sat down on a toilet, clutching his heart. I stared at him incredulously.
Professor Snape bent over the Troll, and Professor McGonagall was looking at Ronald and Harry, her eyes shifting over to look at me. I wasn't looking at her, I was still trying to get Hermione to stand to her feet.
"What on earth were you thinking of?" Professor McGonagall asked. She looked furious, her thin lips pressed into a line and were white. "You're lucky you weren't killed. Why aren't you in your dormitory?"
Snape looked at Harry and then at me. I looked away.
Hermione finally struggled to her feet, "Please, Professor McGonagall- they were looking for me."
"Miss Granger!" Professor McGonagall said, sounding shocked.
"I went looking for the troll because I- I thought I could deal with it on my own- you know, because I've read all about them."
Ronald dropped his wand with a clatter, and I opened my mouth in shock. Hermione shot me a glance out of the corner of her eye and I snapped my mouth shut. "If they hadn't found me, I'd be dead now. Harry stuck his wand up its nose and Ronald knocked it out with its own club. They didn't have time to come and fetch anyone. It was about to finish me off when they arrived."
I wasn't shocked anymore, I should've seen this coming. I heard the echo of her story in my futuristic visions. To bad I had pushed the vision away earlier, trying to comfort Hermione.
Professor McGonagall was shocked, and it took her a moment to speak. "Well- in that case... Miss Granger, you foolish girl, how could you think of tackling a mountain troll on your own?"
Hermione hung her head. I noticed that Snape's leg was bleeding. I looked at it for a while. Then he swung his robe over to cover it. I looked up and met his gaze. I blushed, looking away. He'd been bitten by the three headed dog. Of that, I was sure. I shot a look at Quirrell and narrowed my eyes. I was sure Snape had tried to stop Quirrell from getting past the three-headed dog... but what did Quirrell want with it? Why hadn't I seen that in the visions? Because he hadn't gotten to it? Maybe I should pay the three-headed dog a visit. I glanced at Snape's covered leg again. Hmm, on second thought, the one occurrence had been enough.
Professor McGonagall said, "Miss Granger, five points will be taken from Gryffindor for this. I'm very disappointed in you. If you're not hurt at all, you'd better get off to Gryffindor tower. Students are finishing the feast in their houses."
Five points? Was that it? What about detention? I mean, of course I didn't want Hermione in trouble or anything but aren't Professors supposed to discourage dangerous occurrences? If only five points were taken away from me for doing anything- I'd probably do it again- depending on what it was.
Then again, Trolls probably wouldn't be let in again. Dumbledore would see to that.
Hermione left quickly, shooting me another, more obvious look.
"Miss Kane, what was your part in this story?" Professor McGonagall asked, her eyes seemed to penetrate into my soul.
I hesitated, unsure now. If only Hermione had shared the truth, I could've shared the truth! I went with something close enough.
"I was in here before the troll came. I didn't even know there was a troll until it came in the bathroom. I felt sick but I didn't think it was serious, and I ran from the Great Hall into here." I glanced over at Professor Snape at that moment. I'd practically run him down, he probably remembered. "I was right, it was nothing serious, so I'm fine, but when I tried leaving the bathroom, the troll was already here and well. . ." I drifted off, avoiding Harry and Ron's gaze.
Professor McGonagall nodded. "Is that cut the only place you're hurt?"
"What cut?" I asked, looking down. I looked in the mirror. There was a small cut above my eyebrow. How'd I been cut there? "Oh, it's fine." I self-consciously rubbed my chin where it'd glanced off the marble floor.
"I suggest you go back to your house common room then." Professor McGonagall said. I nodded, stepping past the troll and walking out of the bathroom. Professor Snape's eyes bore into my back. I felt chills run up my spine. I wish I hadn't had to of lied. I hated lying, even if I was good at it.
I went back to the common room where everyone was partying and having a good time. I slipped up to the dormitory and found Sadie waiting on my chair. I fed her pieces of Muffin while I tied Dad and Trang's letters to her leg.
I kissed the top of her head, and opened the dormitory window. "Safe flight." I said. I watched her take off into the night sky.
Hermione, Harry, and Ron would be friends this day forward. At least, that was what I saw for now. I dressed in blue pajamas, and I climbed into bed. As I rolled over, trying to fall asleep, I wondered where exactly I would fit in, and if Hermione and I would still be friends in the morning.

𝕿𝖍𝖊 𝖉𝖔𝖔𝖗 𝖜𝖆𝖘 opened immediately by a tall, thin woman wearing emerald-green robes. She was beautiful, in a sense. She had black hair that was pulled up into a tight bun and wore square spectacles pushed tightly up on her nose. Though no one had said her name nor had she introduced herself, I knew that she was Professor McGonagall and could turn into a cat because she's an Animagus. I'm not particularly sure how I knew that but it was the least of my concerns at the moment.
"The firs' years, Professor McGonagall," The man said.
"Thank you, Hagrid. I will take them from here."
The man who's name was Hagrid shuffled off to the side, leaving us with Professor McGonagall. I barely knew her and I already admired her greatly. She just gave off that. . .energy I suppose is the closest word.
The doors were opened even wider to show the entrance hall. It was enormous. I think it would've fit our house perhaps twenty-two times inside of it. The décor was much like those of other wizarding places in our communities. The walls lit with flaming torches and marble staircases. We liked flair.
Professor McGonagall led us to a separate chamber hall from the rest of the school. I could hear the older students laughing and talking nearby. I was suddenly conscious of everyone standing much closer together. I found myself once again, next to Hermione, who was bouncing up and down on the balls of her feet. Harry was two people over. My stomach turned and my skin tingled with nerves.
He was quite handsome and he looked so much like dad it was ridiculous. Even his black hair was sticking out everywhere just like dad's was in every picture Lupin had of him. He pushed his glasses up on his nose again. I wanted to reach out and touch his shoulder and say, "Hi, I'm Elizabeth Potter", but I refrained from doing so. Now wasn't the time.
"Welcome to Hogwarts." Professor McGonagall said and I tore my attention away from Harry once again. "The start-of-term banquet will begin shortly, but before you take your seats in the Great Hall, you will be sorted into your houses. The Sorting is a very important ceremony because, while you are here, your house will be something like your family within Hogwarts. You will have classes with the rest of your house, sleep in your house dormitory, and spend free time in your house common room.
"The four houses are called Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, and Slytherin." She said the last house with a faint air of distaste. I grinned, I liked her a lot already. "Each house has its own noble history and each has produced outstanding witches and wizards. While you are at Hogwarts, your triumphs will earn you house points, while any rules-breaking will lose house points. At the end of the year, the house with the most points is awarded the house cup, a great honor. I hope each of you will be a credit to whichever house becomes yours."
I was begging inside my head for Gryffindor. I could tell she was the Gryffindor house head. Plus literally my entire family, James, Lily, Remus, and Sirius had been in Gryffindor. I had to be in that house. It was like a need.
"The Sorting Ceremony will take place in a few minutes in front of the rest of the school. I suggest you all smarten yourselves up as much as you can while you are waiting." She paused for a moment to give the words effect. I saw Harry flatten his hair out of the corner of my eyes. "I shall return when we are ready for you, Please wait quietly."
She turned and left the chamber. Hermione started speaking under her breath. At first, I thought it was nonsense and then I realized that she was repeating spells under her breath.
"What are you doing?" I asked her, confused.
"Well I don't know exactly which spells I will need to perform in front of the school so I'm just trying to remember everything that I know." She said nervously.
I laughed quietly. "No, it's nothing like that. They don't expect us to know any magic yet. There's this thing called a sorting hat. We just put it on our head and then it decides which house will be the best fit for us."
"Oh." Hermione said, her shoulders relaxing. "Well that makes it all a bit more better now, doesn't it?"
I nodded. Then several people screamed, making both Hermione and I jump in the air. I looked around in a hurry, sure we were being attacked by a magical beast from the Forbidden Forest.
About twenty or so ghosts had floated through the wall and were arguing with each other. I listened in delight.
"My dear Friar, haven't we given Peeves all the chances he deserves? He gives us all a bad name and you know, he's not really even a ghost- I say, what are you all doing here?" Said a ghost with a ruff and tights. Nearly Headless Nick. Now how in the world had I known that?
I mean, of course, my father had told me all about the different ghosts at Hogwarts and Peeves the poltergeist. Perhaps I had remembered more than I thought I had.
Nobody answered. I guess they were all to nervous to talk to ghosts.
"We're about to be sorted." I said, rather calmly for meeting a ghost for the first time, I thought. "We're first years."
People muttered around me. I guess they were shocked that someone had answered. To be fair, I was a little shocked myself. I was normally quite shy.
"Hope to see you all in Hufflepuff." Said a larger ghost, the Fat Friar. "My old house you know."
"Move along now, the Sorting Ceremony's about to start." Professor McGonagall said, marching back into the room. I watched the ghosts float through the walls without saying another word. Hermione was staring at me in awe. I blushed and looked down at the floor.
"Now, form a line." Professor McGonagall said sharply. "And follow me."
Hermione got in line behind the orange haired boy and I got behind her. We walked through the doors into the Great Hall. I felt my cheeks flush red. Everything my father had told me about the Sorting Ceremony hadn't prepared me for the feeling of hundreds of students eyes on me.
I looked up at the ceiling. I heard Hermione whisper in front of me, "It's bewitched to look like the sky outside. I read about it in Hogwarts, A History."
I wanted to immediately talk to her about the book. I'd read that book when I was seven and read it multiple times a year. I wanted to know her opinion about everything in it. The legends and myths and history and founders. But I kept my mouth shut.
We stopped in front of the teachers, the Sorting hat sitting on a wooden stool two stairs up. Professor McGonagall was standing to the side with a roll of parchment. All the students in the hall were staring at the hat, and everyone I was standing with was staring at the hat as well. I knew it was about to sing and I waited, amused. I wondered what it sounded like.
"Oh, you may not think I'm pretty
But don't judge on what you see
I'll eat myself if you can find
A smarter hat than me.
You can keep your bowlers black,
Your top hats sleek and tall,
For I'm the Hogwarts Sorting Hat
And I can cap them all.
There's nothing hidden in your head
The Sorting Hat can't see,
So try me on and I will tell you
Where you ought to be
You might belong to Gryffindor,
Where dwell the brave at heart,
Their daring, nerve, and chivalry
Set Gryffindor apart;
You might belong in Hufflepuff,
Where they are just and loyal,
Those patient Hufflepuffs are true
And unafraid of toil;
Or yet in wise old Ravenclaw,
If you've a ready mind,
Where those of wit and learning,
Will always find their kind;
Or perhaps in Slytherin
You'll make your real friends,
Those cunning folk use any means
To achieve their ends.
So put me on! Don't be afraid!
And don't get in a flap
You're in safe hands (though I have none)
For I'm the thinking cap!"
The entire hall burst into applause. It bowed to the four tables and became still again, waiting for students to put it on. I felt a nervous twist in my stomach. I was no longer worried about which house I would be in. Gryffindor, Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff- as long as I wasn't in Slytherin. No, now I was worried that the hat would see the images in my head. What would it say? What would it think? Did it matter?
I scanned the table, because I knew I would find the man in the purple turban up there. Indeed, he was sitting next to a tall man with shoulder length-black hair and black eyes. Professor Quirrell. Defense Against the Dark Arts Professor. Evil and fake. Talking to Professor Snape. Potions. The person who looked like a villian but was really a hero.
Evil and fake? Villians and heroes? Why had I let those characteristics define Professor Quirrell and Professor Snape? Growing up with a werewolf as a dad had led me to make judgements after knowing the person, not before. So why had I jumped to such hasty conclusions?
I let my thoughts die down as Professor McGonagall opened up the roll of parchment to start calling names.
"Abbot, Hannah!"
A pale, yet pink faced girl with blonde pigtails walked out of line, stumbling over a boy's leg. I heard a small laugh behind me and I spun around to see a pale blond boy standing between two fat boys smirking. I turned back around with a roll of my eyes. Bet he was going to be in Slytherin.
"HUFFLEPUFF!" shouted the hat.
The table on the right clapped and Hannah went to sit with them. Hannah looked like a nice girl and so did the rest of the Hufflepuff table.
"Bones, Susan!"
I watched a darker haired girl climb up the steps and sit on the stool. The hat fit just over her eyes.
"HUFFLEPUFF!" The hat shouted again.
"Boot, Terry!" A dark haired boy crept out of the line and went to sit on the stool this time.
"RAVENCLAW!" The table on the left clapped and multiple Ravenclaw students shook hands with Terry as he sat down. I wouldn't mind being in that house either. My nerves went down a notch again.
"Brocklehurst, Mandy."
"RAVENCLAW!"
"Brown, Lavender." This was a skinny and tall girl with golden brown curly hair. She had blue eyes and wore a bandana in her hair.
"GRYFFINDOR" The hat shouted. The table on the far left clapped. I looked over to see that table and laughed out-loud, quickly stifling it. Fred and George Weasley were cat-calling.
"Bulstrode, Millicent." A thick, dark girl with stringy black hair was called up. I wrinkled my nose. What was with me today? Perhaps I was sick. Mentally sick. Was that a thing?
"SLYTHERIN." the hat shouted. The last table exploded into cheers. I didn't even look at them. That table wasn't an option for me.
"Crabbe, Vincent."
The thick guy that had been standing next to the pale blond boy pushed past me to get up to the stairs.
"Could've said excuse me." I muttered under my breath so no one could hear me.
"SLYTHERIN."
"Finch-Fletchley, Justin."
"HUFFLEPUFF!"
"Finnigan, Seamus," A sandy-haired boy walked up calmly to sit on the stool. The hat stayed on his head for nearly a full minute.
"GRYFFINDOR"
"Granger, Hermione."
Her name gave me a start and I watched as Hermione eagerly ran up the steps and grabbed the hat from Professor McGonagall. She jammed it on her head. The Sorting Hat took about twenty seconds to decide that she was going to end up in Gryffindor. For some reason, my heart sank.
"Goyle, Gregory."
The second thick boy stomped up the stairs and sat on the stool. I wondered if his weight would break the stool legs.
"SLYTHERIN"
"Kane, Elizabeth."
My heart leapt into my throat and I walked as calmly as possible up the stone steps and sat down on the stool. The hat was placed on my head and slipped down past my eyes.
There was a small voice that seemed to be talking directly into my ear. "Yes, you are a difficult case, aren't you. You have plenty of courage and you have great talent and smarts. . .hmmm. . . but you're futuristic thoughts. . .that could prove to be a problem."
Futuristic thoughts?
"Yes, those flashes of memories are the future. You should use those smartly and sharpen your skill. I believe you could make a wonderful seer. . .I dearly wish to put you in Gryffindor, but that doesn't seem right."
The Sorting Hat seemed to be talking more to itself than to me. Why not Gryffindor? I thought defiantly. Especially if it's where you believe I belong.
"It all leads back to those futuristic thoughts, Elizabeth Potter, though I never said that Gryffindor was where you belonged." The name gave me a start.
You know who I am? The real me, I mean.
"Of course, I'm the Sorting Hat. I believe that, though you could possibly belong in Gryffindor or Ravenclaw, they are to dangerous for you. So is Slytherin. Like I said, you'll figure it out in due time. Sharpen those skills. . .besides, you were already sorted in Hufflepuff long before you came here."
Before I could even think dismally about Hufflepuff and argue to be in Gryffindor, the sorting hat had shouted. "HUFFLEPUFF!"
I lifted the hat off of my head and handed it to Professor McGonagall. I wondered exactly how long I had sat there. Surely, longer than a minute. Hannah shook my hand as I sat down and Susan Bones smiled at me.
I smiled back, sort of out of it. I didn't notice Neville Longbottom as he tripped over himself on the way to the stool. The hat took forever with Neville as well. But I didn't notice.
Futuristic thoughts? I looked up at the teachers table. Professor Snape was looking down at me. I stared back. Multiple flashes happened in my mind, looking at him. A bloody leg, a flash of him and my mum on a wedding day, and him and Quirrell in the forest.
"Potter, Harry"
I jerked my head towards Harry. Whispers immediately arose through the tables. Hannah and Susan looked wide-eyed at each other. Albus Dumbledore, who had been sitting back in his chair, looking bored, suddenly sat straight up and forward, all eyes on Harry.
Harry had the hat on his head for twenty-three seconds before the hat shouted "GRYFFINDOR"
He received the loudest cheers yet. Fred and George were yelling "We got Potter! We got Potter!" Another red head with glasses, a prefect if that was what his badge was for, shook Harry's hand. I felt like crying. I'd never felt so far away from my brother as I did now. Perhaps because we were in such close proximity and others were meeting him before I was.
"Thomas, Dean." Was a good-looking black boy, much taller than most of the other boys our age. He was sorted into Gryffindor as well. I looked on gloomily.
"Turpin, Lisa."
"RAVENCLAW!"
The red haired boy that Harry had been talking too, Weasley, Ronald, was also sorted into Gryffindor. I supposed the entire family was probably in Gryffindor. I would've been there too, if the stinking Sorting Hat hadn't put me in Hufflepuff. Well. . .no. . .no, maybe it wouldn't have. I was trying to blame the hat for something that wasn't it's fault. If it believed me to be a Hufflepuff. . . wasn't I a Hufflepuff? Why was I fighting this decision so hard?
"Zabini, Blaise." was sorted into Slytherin.
I stared down at my plate. No, this didn't mean anything. After all, the Patil twins had been separated. Parvati was in Gryffindor and Padma was in Ravenclaw. Harry and I could still be brother and sister, even if we were in separate houses and yet. . .
If the sorting hat thought it was dangerous for me to be in the same house with my brother. . . and my parents didn't want anyone to know that I existed. . .then should Harry know? I mean, when exactly were my parents going to show that I was Harry's twin brother? What if I never was meant to be known by anyone except my family. My family that was now only Lupin since Lily and James and Sirius were all gone. . .
And though the decision hurt, that was when I decided not to tell Harry I was his sister. Friends, and that was it if I was lucky. Until I got some sort of sign or learned more about my parents secrets or somehow managed to wear the sorting hat again and find out more, I wouldn't tell anybody about my secret. And that now included Harry.
Dumbledore stood at that moment and I was glad to be torn from my thoughts. Professor Snape was staring at me again and I thought about the vision I'd seen with him and my mum. That certainly wasn't in the future. And it certainly couldn't be possible because my father was James.
"Welcome!" Dumbledore said and I looked away from Professor Snape. "Welcome to a new year at Hogwarts! Before we begin our banquet, I would like to say a few words. And here they are: Nitwit! Blubber! Oddment! Tweak!"
I laughed and clapped with the others as food appeared on our table. Now that I was resigned in my decision, I felt that I could relax. . .for the time being anyways. I didn't eat much since I preferred dessert over everything else. But I did eat a small piece of steak while waiting.
Hannah, Susan, Leanne, and I all talked while we ate. All three of them were Half-bloods like me. They were extremely interested to find out I was adopted though I steered clear of names and specific details.
I stopped talking to eat ice cream and a slice of cake. I know, I'm an eleven year old with a sweet tooth. I didn't have any flashes while eating. I wondered if that was the key to not having flashes- Eating.
Eventually the food went away and Dumbledore stood up again. He's going to deliver some strange news, I thought randomly and then wondered if that was just knowing that Dumbledore was sort've eccentric or if I was predicting the future. Perhaps a bit of both.
"Ahem- just a few more words now that we are all fed and watered. I have a few start-of-term notices to give you. First years should note that the forest on the grounds is forbidden to all pupils. And a few of our older students would do well to remember that as well."
I noticed that his eyes flashed to the Gryffindor door table and to Fred and George Weasley in particular. Yes, those were my kind of guys.
"I have also been asked by Mr. Filch, the caretaker, to remind you all that no magic should be used between classes in the corridors. Quidditch trials will be held in the second week of the term. Anyone interested for their house teams should contact Madam Hooch."
Maybe next year I would buy a decent broom and try out for the team. Or maybe I would buy the broom if I made the team.
"And finally, I must tell you that this year, the third-floor corridor on the right-hand side is out of bounds to everyone who does not wish to die a very painful death."
Some people laughed, but I did not. This was serious. A flash happened in my mind and I saw the three-headed dog again. Okay, that was a pretty legitimate reason not to go down that corridor. I would rather not be a dog chew toy. I didn't like dogs. I was scared of them.
"And now, before we go to bed, let us sing the school song!" Dumbledore said, becoming more excited than he had the entire speech. I looked at the other teachers. All except Professor Flitwick, the charms Professor, looked like they'd rather take a sip of Skele-grow which is a disgusting medicine I had to take once at St. Mungo's when I broke my arm doing Muggle ice- skating.
Everyone stood on their feet as words twisted themselves into the air, having erupted from the tip of Dumbledore's wand. I tried numbly to think of how I was going to sing this. I hated singing with a passion (in public)- I was no good at it. I became faintly aware of Professor Snape's' eyes on me again. What was his deal?
The school suddenly started singing and I blushed, still unable to think of a way to sing this song.
"Hogwarts, Hogwarts,
Hoggy Warty Hogwarts
Teach us something please,
Whether we be old and bald
or young with scabby knees
Our heads could do with filling
With some interesting stuff
For now they're bare and full of air,
Dead flies and bits of fluff,
So teach us things worth knowing,
Bring back what we've forgot,
Just do your best, we'll do the rest,
and learn until our brains all rot."
I was never going to forget anything I learned here, I thought, looking up at the ceiling. I was going to learn and I was going to be the smartest witch of my class. I was going to prove something to myself and to everyone else- I just wasn't sure what yet.
Dumbledore clapped loudly when everyone was done singing (The Weasley twins had sung as slowly as possible, almost making me laugh). "Ah music," he said, as he wiped his eyes. I wondered if he was legitimately crying. Like I said- eccentric. "A magic beyond all we do here! And now, bedtime. Off you trot!"
I followed Susan one our way to our common room. Leading the way was our prefect, Gabriel Truman. We followed him to where the kitchen was. I knew it was behind the fruit painting though no one else gave it a second look. It was disconcerting really, knowing so much about a place I hadn't even spent four hours in.
Gabriel stopped in front of a bunch of barrels and said, "Gather around and look very closely. Our common room is the only one with intruder-repelling devices and unless you fancy smelling like vinegar for a couple days, I suggest you pay attention."
He showed us that we had to pick barrel two from the bottom, middle of the second row, and tap on it in the rhythm of 'Helga Hufflepuff'. He demonstrated it and we all entered the common room. My mouth dropped in surprise.
Even though we couldn't have possibly been on ground floor, there were round windows near the top of the walls that let in light. Of course, it was night now so they weren't lit. Instead, the lamps on tables were lit.
The common room was a large, earthy, round room, with a low ceiling. Everything about the room was circular.
The décor was probably meant to emphasize the earthy-feel of the room. There were many plants hanging or sitting around the room. There was a dancing plant near the window. Ivy crept around the fireplace and on the walls.
The furniture was all yellow and black patterned and was made up of rounded sofas and chairs. They were furnished with copper touchings. The tables were made of pine, oak, and cypress and were also round.
There were two, large round doors on either side of the common room, opposite the entry door. They led to the boy and girl dormitories.
The entire common room gave me a hobbit like feeling. I wondered if this was how J.R.R. Tolkien pictured Frodo Baggins home. Or maybe like a cabin in the middle of the woods.
Gabriel told us to retire to our rooms and I followed the other girls to the large wooden door on the right side of the room.
The other girls got ready for bed immediately and soon, they were all sound asleep in their beds. I didn't go to bed right away, too jittery to try and sleep.
I went to my trunk, pulling out a sheaf of parchment. Lighting a candle, I grabbed my Muggle pen. I wrote a letter to my dad. Perhaps it was the feeling of disappointment, but I wanted him to tell me everything was all right. I just wanted to feel his strong arms around me again. I wanted to hear him call me his daughter- just like the night of the robber.
I wrote quickly:
Dear Dad,
I'm not entirely sure how I feel right now. A lot has happened since I got on that train. I keep seeing visions of random stuff. A red stone, a three headed dog, and a bunch of other objects, places or people. Sometimes Harry is in the visions too. The sorting hat could see those visions inside my head and told me that it wasn't safe for me to be in Gryffindor, Ravenclaw, or even Slytherin. He said they were futuristic visions and I needed to hone my skills. He said that being in Hufflepuff was a safe house. I'm not really sure what's going on though.
I guess that brings me to my next point: Harry. I don't think I can tell him who I am. My parents obviously thought I should be a secret and the Sorting Hat seems to think so too. He knew my true name- he called me Elizabeth Potter though only I could hear.
I also keep seeing visions of Professor Snape which is weird and when I look at the teachers and some of the students, I already know their names even thought I've never met or heard their names before. Do you think that's part of the visions?
I'd be lying if I said I was fine. In reality, I'm scared. I mean, I'm going to tough it out- I'm not your daughter for nothing. I do feel like I let you down by not being in Gryffindor but the sorting hat did say that if it wasn't for my visions, I would've ended up there. . .well maybe. He didn't really say that. He just said I could've belonged in Gryffindor. I don't know if that's really the same thing or if I'm just trying to will it to be the same thing. He also said something about me being sorted into Hufflepuff a long time ago. I don't know what he's talking about.
I miss you already. I hope you don't get to worried when you read this, I don't want to worry you. Hopefully my classes go well tomorrow.
A lot of love,
Elizabeth

𝕿𝖍𝖊 𝖉𝖆𝖞𝖘 𝖕𝖆𝖘𝖘𝖊𝖉 steadily until September 1 came. I woke up extremely early, even earlier than Dad. Full moon had been two weeks prior so he was able to come to the station with me today. I bounced down the stairs to make myself tea, bacon, and eggs.
Dad came downstairs an hour later, going to the kitchen to reheat cold eggs and bacon. I had already dragged my heavy trunk down the stairs and set it up by the door. I hadn't put Sadie in her cage yet though. I wasn't going to put her back in until the last second. I didn't like the idea of animals being in cages (which was ironic because I loved the zoo. Of course, one could argue that those 'cages' were much bigger and would be more accurately classified as 'habitats'). She had just come in from a night of hunting and was sleeping in my room.
Dad smiled at me before rubbing his eyes and sitting down, putting his plate of reheated food in front of him. "So, today's the big day, huh?"
I nodded, to nervous to say much. I kept rushing up and down the stairs, making sure I hadn't forgotten something or adding something to the trunk.
At 10:00, we left the house. Dad had called a Wizarding taxi and so that's what we arrived at the station in. Dad and the taxi driver talked the entire time about wizarding politics while I stared out the windows, watching as we jumped lanes. We got to the station at 10: 30, leaving us with plenty of time before the train left.
Dad led me to where the border was for the Hogwarts express. I eyed the brick wall shrewdly. Then, looking around, I walked into it, closing my eyes. When I opened my eyes, I found myself in a cleaner station- it looked almost brand new. There was a bright red train on the tracks, waiting for students to hop on before it took off.
There were some other early birds but I didn't feel like getting on the train quite yet. I let the conductors take my luggage and Sadie, and I stood by my dad while we waited for it to get near the time the train was supposed to leave.
I started getting even more nervous, looking around to see if I would recognize my own brother. Lupin seemed to sympathize with my anxiety. He turned me around so I couldn't see anyone and got on one knee to talk to me. He pulled me into a hug and I hugged him back fiercely.
"Don't worry about Harry, Elizabeth." He whispered in my ear, stilling hugging me. I rested my chin on his shoulder. "Even if you don't see him now or on the train, you'll see him at the sorting ceremony. You'll have plenty of time to get to know each other. You don't have to worry about anything."
"Except grades." I said matter of factly. "Oh and what house I'm going to be sorted into because I'm afraid I won't get into Gryffindor." It was a feeling and as I've said before- my feelings are pretty good.
"Elizabeth, just because you're not in Gryffindor won't mean that you're not my daughter, or that you're not James and Lily's daughter. You'd do wonderfully in Ravenclaw, you're so smart, or Hufflepuff because you're so kind. Heck, Lizzy, even Slytherin-"
"I won't be in Slytherin." I said fiercely. "I'll leave first."
Lupin smiled gently, pulling back, but keeping his hands on my shoulders. "I don't care what house you're in is all I'm saying, okay?"
I nodded, the apprehension and nerves still tingling in my stomach. "I love you dad."
"I love you too sweetheart. Now get on the train so it won't leave without you." Lupin squeezed me tightly again. "Oh, you're growing up so quickly." He almost seemed to fret with the last sentence.
I smiled and grabbed the train handle to climb onto the train. Then there was a flash through my mind, like I was seeing something that wasn't there. A flaming red stone on a stair made of stone. I let go of the handle and took a step back from the train, frowning and slightly apprehensive.
"Elizabeth?" I heard my dad's voice. He sounded a bit worried, "You okay?"
I turned to see him. "Um, yeah, everything's fine." I frowned and turned back to the train and grabbed the handle. Nothing happened. I climbed onto the train, turned and waved to dad, and then hurried through the train to find an empty compartment.
I found an empty one and I went inside and sat down, still frowning. What was that random red stone? It had been glistening like it was on fire.
I pushed it out of my mind fairly quickly however, and pulled out one of my Muggle books. It was a bunch of fairy tales written by the Brothers Grimm.
There was a knock on the compartment door some time later, and I looked up. There was a young girl standing outside it, probably my age. She had bushy brown hair and brown eyes. I eyed her warily.
"May I come in?" She asked in a very posh accent.
"Sure," I said, excited to make my very first friend. If, she was friendly, that is.
She sat down on the seat opposite me. She seemed very nervous as well. She was also already wearing her school robes. I wondered which Hogwarts house symbol would be sewed onto her robes tomorrow morning.
"I don't want to be rude," I asked hesitantly. "Are you a muggle?"
She nodded, "Yes. I was quite excited when I found out about Hogwarts. You must be a pure-blood then?"
"No, half-blood. My dad was a wizard and my mum was a muggle born witch." I said. "But I lived with my adopted dad because they both passed away. My dad's also a Wizard." I didn't mention that he was a werewolf. Werewolves had even more biased hate in the Muggle world.
"I'm Hermione Granger." She said, sticking out a hand.
"Elizabeth Kane," I said, smiling and shaking it. "Welcome to the Wizarding world."
She was the type of girl who, when nervous, started talking as fast as possible. But that was alright, I talked quite fast too- though not when I was nervous. Our conversations were about books, both magical and muggle. She too liked to read and had been top of her class at her Muggle school. We were a perfect match.
"Even if we're not in the same house, we can be study buddies." I said sometime throughout the conversation. Things were going perfectly, just the way that I'd wanted them to go. This was probably my very first friend! "What house do you hope to be in?"
"Either Gryffindor or Ravenclaw." Hermione said rather quickly. I soon realized that Hermione wasn't a girl who talked fast only when she was nervous. She just talked fast- period. She was probably the first person I knew to talk at such a speed. Trang talked much slower because Vietnamese was her first language. Dad didn't talk fast either, perhaps because he didn't feel the need to rush all of his words out. But Hermione and I got our ideas out faster because we talked faster. And the plus was that we completely understood what the other was talking about. "Gryffindor sounds to be the best and of course, Dumbledore himself was in Gryffindor. But Ravenclaw could be a better fit for me, I'm not sure."
I nodded. "Both my dad's and my mum were in Gryffindor, but that doesn't mean anything of course. A family friend of mine, his name was Sirius, he was in Gryffindor even though his entire family was in Slytherin. I could easily end up in another house."
We laughed and talked some more until the compartment door opened again. This time, there was a very large and rather round boy there. He looked rather down. Hermione and I looked up at him.
"Have either of you seen a toad?" He asked gloomily. "I've lost him. His name is Trevor."
"Er- no." I said, exchanging a quick look with Hermione.
"What's your name?" Hermione asked, sounding excited again. I wondered if she'd had many friends outside of Hogwarts. I hadn't. It had been Trang, Kat, and Charis and really, mostly Trang because Kat moved to Germany and Charis was younger than me by a few years.
"Neville. Neville Longbottom." He said. "Well, I guess I should go and look for him in another compartment."
Hermione jumped up. "I'll help you look, that way, we can cover more area together."
I hesitated, the trolley-witch was coming through. "I'll join you guys in a moment, alright? I'm going to buy some food for us first."
Hermione waved, rather excitedly for someone who was going out to find a toad, and followed Neville out.
I bought licorice wands, Sugar Quills, chocolate frogs, and two flasks of pumpkin juice. I left them under my robes and then headed out to go and see if there was a toad in any compartments. 'A toad. Who in their right mind brings a bloody toad to Hogwarts', I thought as I walked down the hallway.
The first compartment I came to had two red head boys in it and an African American boy. The red heads looked like they might be twins.
I knocked lightly on the door. The red headed boys looked up and I saw that they were twins. The African American boy slammed the lid down on his cardboard box. I opened the door a couple of inches.
"Umm, have you seen a toad? A boy name Neville's lost one." I said shyly, looking down at the ground. I had forgotten my glasses but could still make out the lettering on the boy's box. Some sort of Muggle shoe box.
"Nah." One of the twins said. "What's your name? You're one of the first years, right?"
"Yeah, I'm Elizabeth Kane." I said, barely able to meet their curious gaze. "And you?"
"This is George," the second twin said. "And I'm Fred Weasley. That there is our friend Lee Jordan."
"Nice to meet all of you. I suppose I should continue helping Neville look for his toad." I said, blushing as I looked at Fred's face. What a cute guy. I wondered how much older he was then me and then blushed even darker. I hurried away from the compartment and went back to my own. Hermione wasn't back yet.
I closed the shutters for a couple of seconds while I put on my robes and then opened the shutters again.
A couple minutes later, Hermione came back, breathless. "Guess what!" she gushed, as I handed her some pumpkin juice. My mouth was full of chocolate frog so I just shrugged, reaching for my own Pumpkin juice.
"I just met Harry Potter!" She exclaimed.
I choked on my frog. Gasping for breath, I chugged the pumpkin juice, and when my air way was empty I sputtered, "No way! Really?"
"Yes. He has the scar and all. He also had horrible glasses. They were all patched up with tape. I repaired them for him." She said, pleased. "I'm just glad the spell went well."
"You did a charm already?" I asked, surprised and momentarily distracted. I could do multiple charms already-I'd been practicing out of my Charm textbook- but dad had warned me not do any magic outside of Hogwarts. So I didn't do magic. Not when he was around anyways. My self control was very limited.
"Well it was relatively easy." She said, slightly bragging. "and I've been practicing some at home. Can you do magic yet?"
"Yes." I said immediately, not wanting to be shown up by anyone, not even someone that I could possibly consider a friend. I had a rather competitive gene whether in sports or learning and it was this gene that resulted in me having few friends. Apparently I was a know-it-all. Oh well, at least I was going to become something when I grew up. "But dad told me not to do magic outside of Hogwarts. There are wizarding laws and since I'm eleven, I have the trace."
"Oh." Hermione said in surprise. She talked a bit more about Harry while I chewed on a licorice wand. He sounded like a nice boy. He had green eyes she said. 'Green eyes like mum.' I thought. He had glasses. 'Like me' I thought. 'And Dad'. I also wondered if his were for reading only or if he needed them for sight. There was so much I wanted to know. I would be able to ask him soon, I supposed.
The train started to slow down and I got up and stretched. I only had one chocolate frog left and I gave it to Hermione so that she could start a collection. I had a huge collection, about 538 cards at home. That was excluding my duplicates which probably put my collection around 1,254.
"Come on!" Hermione squealed, running down the hallway to exit the train. She was really much more excited than I was. Ridiculous really, but perhaps I was more nervous rather than excited.
"Wait up!" I called out, but others were coming out of their compartments and I fell behind. I shuffled behind the others. Outside the train, I looked around for Hermione. I heard a loud voice saying "Firs' Years! Firs' years over here!"
I followed the voice to a very large looking man. He was much taller than most everyone here, and wider too. Perhaps he was part giant. But he looked kind. I could tell by the eyes. He said something to another student and led the way down to the shore where we were to get into boats. I still couldn't find Hermione so I got into a random boat with some other kids.
The boats started across the water. The two girls in the boat introduced themselves as Parvati and Padma Patil. The boy in the boat introduced himself as Ernie Macmillan.
Ernie leaned forward as we started to go under a rock bridge. "Did you guys know that there's a rumor saying that Harry Potter is on the train?"
Parvati and Padma launched into immediate conversation with Ernie, asking all sorts of questions. His account wasn't as accurate as Hermione's. I wondered, if people knew about me, would they be saying, "Did you hear that Harry and Elizabeth Potter are on the train?" Would they be treating me any differently? That was an uncomfortable question and I was suddenly glad that I was only Elizabeth Kane- at least at the moment. Perhaps I would feel differently later.
I was thinking about a lot of 'perhapses'.
Hogwarts came into view as we rounded the bend, but there were quick flashes in my mind so I didn't see the castle right away. I went ridged, trying to place the images.
There was a man in a purple turban. Then, there was a boy with black hair and a scar on his head diving on a broom. Then, a three-headed dog. There was a tall mirror, and then there was the red stone again, glistening and I saw that the stone wasn't on fire, but that it was reflecting the image of a fire burning from across the room.
The visions faded and I was seeing the Hogwarts castle. I looked around. No one seemed to be seeing any visions. I spotted Hermione in a boat with Neville and two boys. One of them was a boy with black hair who looked something like dad. Harry. I felt my stomach turn with excitement and nerves. He looked around, looked at me for a second, and then looked away. There was no recognition in his eyes. My stomach dropped and I felt like I was going to be sick. My own brother didn't know me.
I felt tears well up in my eyes and I looked away from everyone. What had I expected? I knew that he didn't know I existed. No one except my parents and Sirius and Lupin did. Harry maybe had known at one point, and that was taken away from me because of Voldemort.
I wiped the tears away. I was being ridiculous, utterly ridiculous. Harry would know me soon enough and after all, we had been rather young when we'd been separated. I couldn't say that I remembered him. It was only because I had a picture of my parents and him as a baby. Perhaps he didn't have pictures of us.
The boats pulled up to the shore and I climbed out after the others. I heard the gravel crunch under my feet. I'd always liked that sound. The large man that was leading us looked into all the boats and shouted, "Oy, you there! Is this your toad?"
"Trevor!" Neville cried aloud.
I bit my bottom lip, unable to take my eyes away from Harry. He was talking to a boy our age with red-orange hair. That boy looked something like the twins that I'd seen on the train.
Harry kept pushing his glasses up on his nose, a sign that they were too large for him. Suddenly, self-conscious, I took off my glasses and looked away from him.
There was another flash in my brain, this one was different. I saw the man in the purple turban again but this time, it was the back of him and I felt a searing pain go through on my chest, right where my silver locket hung underneath my clothes. I clapped my hand to my chest, but the pain was already gone and I quickly dropped my hand, hopping that no one had noticed the seemingly random movement.
We stopped walking up the flight of stone steps and we crowded around a huge, front door made of oak.
The large man turned, surveying everyone, "Everyone here? You, there still got yer toad?" And then he turned back around and knocked three times on the large castle doors.
Summary: In a world where Harry has a sister...the use of minor magic and TW, there are mentions of child abuse in the end of the chapter! You are warned!
a/n: I am on break and on the writing grind! I am debating on posting this on Wattpad or AO3? I'll let yall know :) but I hope you enjoy the chapter!
The same dream kept waking 10-year-old Camila up. A flash of foggy green and shouting, muffled but scared. That is all she remembers when she wakes, but she knows there’s more to it. She lies on the cupboard floor looking at its ceiling as the soft snores of her brother fill the small space. A soft sigh left her lips as she turned to her side, peaking the best she could under the cupboard door to see if she could get an idea of what time it was.
Today was Dudley’s birthday, Camila knew her aunt would want Harry and her up early so they could make breakfast and get things ready for Aunt Petunia’s ‘precious Dudley.’ The twins described their cousin as more barbarian and rotten and a plethora of synonyms before ever could imagine landing on the word precious. Camila’s nose scrunched as she thought of what the Dursleys would have her and Harry do today. She imagined the list of chores they’ll have to do, but it all depended on what Dudley wanted to do today,
Camila was unable to fall back asleep, she counted the lines in the wooded ceiling of the cupboard waiting to be let out of the cage her brother and she were trapped in. She heard shifting coming from upstairs, taking a deep breath in as the sound of footprints was getting clearer. She calmed her nerves as her aunt tapped harshly on the cupboard door for the twins to get up, Camila mentally prepared herself for today, today was Dudley’s birthday and today could not go wrong for any reason. But as you will have it, fate decided to make the Potter twins harder. Camila gently shook Harry to wake up from his dream of green lights and flying motorcycles.
What seemingly would be a silver lining and going to the zoo for the first time, Harry and Camila found themselves getting yelled at. Camilia, sat in between a content Harry and a shaken and wet Dudley. Dudley had fallen in the snake exhibit, she swears the glass was there and then it disappeared.
Dudley and her had gotten into an argument of whether or not the animals in the exhibit were depressed. Dudley had called her crazy for suggesting that they had felt while Camila argued that she wasn’t and that he wouldn’t want to move and be sad if he was isolated behind glass. Turning back to Harry, huffing about how one day Dudley would experience such, and will later agree with her about the matter. Harry amused about her ranting and frustration in the argument. Camila, off in her own little world in her head didn’t notice Harry talking to the snake inhibiting the exhibit but Dudley did, and he made sure to voice and push Harry out of the way. The twins glared at the Dursley boy and witnessed what Amelia thought, what he deserved.
Dudley’s screams got the attention of his mother and father. Camila couldn’t help but feel amused and content with what she saw before her, she turned to her brother.
“I praise whatever and whoever made this possible…Honestly, it's poetic if you think about it, isn’t it Harry?” Camila mused. Harry couldn’t help but let out a laugh at his sister’s comment. However the amusement was quickly replaced with dread as Dudley called her a witch. Camila wanted to be anywhere else but as soon as she saw the fury in her uncle’s eye. Camila couldn’t help but to stand in front of her brother. Never seeing her aunt’s color drain so fast from her face before, Camila felt the biggest pit form in her stomach.
As soon as they returned to Privet Drive, Uncle Vernon had shoved Harry into the cupboard and held a firm grip on Camila. She looked at Harry with wide eyes, as she wasn’t placed in the small room with her brother. Camila felt her heart pounding against her ribs as her uncle dragged her to the kitchen. Camila pleaded with her Uncle as they moved through the hall.
“I swear, I-I didn’t do anything.” Camila managed to stammer out. “I swear Uncle Vernon. I didn’t do-” Camila was cut off with a slap across her face. The sound rang out, the house stilled. She felt her ears ringing and the stinging consuming the right side of her face. It was as if a cold bucket of water was dumped on her. She didn’t dare move or speak, Camila wasn’t sure if she was breathing at all.
“ …You,” Vernon started. “What. Did. You. Do.” He said in a deadly tone Camila hadn’t heard before. She didn’t dare look up at him, she looked ahead at a spot on the fireplace. Camila let out a gasp as she felt her Uncle’s hand pull her hair to turn her to look at him. She saw his purple face. She had faced the consequences of the punishments her Aunt and Uncle gave to Harry and her, but this was different. Vernon gave her a shake,
“I’m not going to ask you again girl…” He said.
Camila felt tears in her eyes. There was a lump in her throat, she opened her mouth to speak but Uncle Vernon’s patience was wearing thin. He had slapped her again.
“You’re a freak of nature…” He sneered. Camila heard footsteps descending down the stairs. He pulled her hair harshly again, pain shot out as he did.
“Speak girl.” He commanded as he slapped her again. Camila closed her eyes as tears silently started to stream down her face. Camila’s right side of her face burned, her head , she felt as if she couldn’t breathe. Her uncle had let go of her and Camila stumbled back as he did so. She wanted nothing more than to disappear from this situation. So lost in her thoughts, she didn’t see the kitchen lights flicker as her Uncle berated her. She didn't hear the fine china start rattling on her aunt's display case. But he did. Her aunt wide eyed as she saw the scene before her. He said nothing but he lifted his walking stick and struck her on her head, just like that the darkness consumed her.
