i wanted to do something with both little brother magnus and @peace-hunter's haunted au so this came about!
Ulfat sat on the cold floor, the silk of her black salwar suit soaked through with her own sweat and the dampness of the room. She hadn’t slept in four days. Sleep required shutting her eyes, and shutting her eyes meant seeing the exact moment the bullets tore through Rehman’s chest, hearing the wet, rattling gasp of a king choking on his own blood. She pressed her forehead against the base of the massive, cracked mirror. The wood smelled of rot and old wax.
"Come back," she whispered into the glass. Her voice didn't echo. The room swallowed it whole. "You promised. You swore on my head, Rehman. You said nobody could touch you."
The haveli dropped to sudden silence, the pit-pattering of the rain against the window being the sole companion in the vacuum for a few minutes until a sharp, violent crack of thunder shook the haveli. The temperature drop with an unnatural, sickening speed. The air in Ulfat’s lungs turned to splinters of ice. The hair on her arms stood on end as a primal, instinctual terror, the kind wired into the DNA of every living thing when death enters the room . Goosebumps broke out across her skin, a sudden, violent shivering seizing her jaw.
Click.
It was the distinct, metallic sound of a lighter.
Ulfat stopped breathing. Slow, agonizingly heavy footsteps dragged across the floorboards behind her. The wood whined under a weight that shouldn't have been there. She turned around, her knees scraping painfully against the grit on the floor.
He was standing in the deepest shadow of the corner, right beneath the cobwebbed chandelier.
It was Rehman, but the sight cleaved her heart wide open. He wasn't a glowing, peaceful spirit. He looked exactly as he had on the dusty soil of that abandoned forest, his dark pathani suit torn, drenched in phantom rain and soaked through with a terrifying, endless supply of black, ethereal blood that pooled at his feet but never touched the floorboards. His face was pale as ash, his sharp jawline rigid, and his eyes — his eyes were dark, hollow voids of absolute rage.
"Ulfat," his voice scraped against the walls. It didn't sound like a man. It sounded like two stones grinding together deep underground.
"Rehman..." A sob, raw and choked with vomit, tore from her throat. She crawled toward him on her hands and knees, ignoring the agonizing chill radiating from his body.
"Don't come near me!" he roared.
The glass in the windows rattled so violently . The sheer force of his anger pushed her back, a wall of freezing air slamming into her chest.
"Look at me!" Rehman hissed, his spectral chest heaving with a breath he didn't need. He held up his hands, the hands that had held her face, the hands that had broken men's spines. They were trembling, flickering wildly like a dying candle. "They put me in the dirt, Ulfat. I can taste the mud. I can feel the worms. I am burning in a fire that doesn't have a spark!"
"Then let me burn with you!" she screamed back, tears spilling over, hot against her freezing skin. She reached out, her fingers slicing through the nothingness of the air .
She expected to feel nothing, but instead, a sensation like a thousand needles pricking her skin shot up her arm. She forced her hand forward until her palm pressed against his chest— right where the bullets had ended him. There was no heartbeat. Just a hollow, sucking vacuum that threatened to pull her soul out through her fingertips.
Rehman flinched, a sound of pure agony escaping him. He didn't want her to feel this. He wanted to be her protector, but death had stripped him of his armor. Slowly, agonizingly, he leaned his head down, his forehead stopping an inch from hers. She could smell it now. It wasn't just the smoky tobacco or colonge anymore. It was the smell of a graveyard after a storm. It was the scent of ending.
"They think it's over," Rehman whispered, his voice dropping to a terrifying, venomous hiss that vibrated in her teeth. "They think because the lion is dead, the hyenas can laugh. You tell them, Ulfat..... you tell them I am watching from the dark. Every corner they turn, every time the lights flicker, every time their breath hitches in the night....that’s me. I am the nightmare they bought."
"Rehman, please... don't leave me here alone. The silence is killing me," she wept, her forehead straining against the invisible, freezing barrier separating the living from the damned.
"You are not alone," he growled, his eyes locking onto hers with a possessive, eternal fanaticism that made her blood run cold and hot at the same time. "I will haunt the very air you breathe until you join me. But until then make them bleed for what they took."
The shadows in the room suddenly lengthened, stretching up the walls like clawed hands. Rehman’s form began to distort, pulling backward into the darkness.
"Rehman! No! Rehman!"
She lunged forward, but her hands closed around nothing but empty, freezing air.
The oppressive cold snapped. The temperature in the room rushed back to a suffocating, humid heat. The smell of copper and old earth vanished, replaced only by the stale dust of the haveli.
Ulfat collapsed onto the floor, gasping for breath, her entire body shaking so hard her teeth clicked together. Her skin was covered in a cold sweat . She was completely alone in the dark. But as she looked up into the cracked mirror, she saw her own reflection and for a split second, the shadow right behind her didn't move when she did.
