The terrifying reports began around 1910 along the road between Postbridge and Two Bridges on Dartmoor. Survivors described feeling an invisible force wrench control of their vehicles, sending them careening toward ditches, stone walls, and steep embankments. Many escaped with injuries, while others were not so fortunate.
The legend gained nationwide attention in 1921 after a fatal motorcycle crash involving Dr. E. H. Helby, the medical officer at Dartmoor Prison. Weeks later, an army captain claimed that invisible hands had grabbed his motorcycle and forced him off the road. Similar accounts continued to surface, cementing the Hairy Hands as one of Britain's most infamous ghost stories.
Not every encounter happened behind the wheel. One chilling tale tells of a woman waiting alone in a stranded caravan when enormous hairy hands clawed at the window in the middle of the night. According to the story, they disappeared only after she traced the sign of the cross on the glass.
Skeptics believe the mystery has a far more ordinary explanation. Investigations found that the road's dangerous camber and narrow bends likely caused many of the crashes, and improvements were eventually made to the roadway.
