An idea: the team is dealing with an enemy that can make them see their fears and regrets as nightmares or hallucinations. Most of the team members are seeing their past trauma, people who hurt them coming back, people they failed to save asking why they didn’t try harder. The former whumper/villain teammate is seeing their own past self- taunting them, saying they never really changed & they’re going to hurt the team eventually. Or maybe the past self hurts them like they did to others before.

fun fact: this is Haze’s power! He creates a field of smoky ‘haze’ (hense the name) and did this to people captured by the Varavos family while he was still working for them
