To say he’d been relieved to hear Damon was awake was a massive understatement.

After a trying encounter with Lara that’d resulted in an even more difficult confrontation with the eldest Rutherford, he had been avoiding the hospital for their sake as well as his own. For once having been as close to a part of their family as was possible without being one of them, he still felt the bitter sting of no longer being welcomed during circumstances he wished would allow them to look past it. Amir would never seek to restore his relationship with the Rutherfords. There was no desire to appeal to Gideon, and certainly not to their father, but he wished he could’ve reached out to a friend in need without it causing even more strain for them all.

Amir had picked the timing carefully. He’d even called ahead to check that he wasn’t set up for any more awkward run-ins. Enough time had passed since Damon had woken that he was sure people weren’t so ready to overcrowd him in their relief. The grin he couldn’t help but shake made his abundantly obvious, though. It’d been so fucking close but the stubborn bastard had dragged himself through. 

“I’d say I’m glad you’re back in the land of the living,” he started, amusement obvious as he took the same spot by his friend’s bed that he’d already occupied once before, “but I was going to try and finesse your watch collection out of the deal if you kicked the bucket, so it’s understandably bittersweet...”
