Reid looks up from his phone, lower lip caught in his teeth. It's a random question, yeah, but it's Sophie, and he kind of likes it when she says anything to him. So he shakes his head. "No, but it seems like a nice place except in winter, but winter is generally shitty. Why?"

She's coming towards them.

Sirius's elbow is digging into his side, and her voice drifts down the corridor, and half of him wants to think something poetic about the way the sound of it envelops him, and the other half of him thinks he is a complete prat for even having such thoughts.

He knows before Sirius nudges him, of course he knows, because somehow it as if another being takes over his body every time she approaches him, who possesses him to ruffle his hair and fail miserably at trying to keep his cool. 

Lily turns away from her friend to glance at him. "Potter, Black," she acknowledges, slowing, but not stopping. The girls begin to pass the two of them by.

"Hold on," James calls out, and wants to hex himself for it. However, it does get her to pause, a fact for which he is grateful, despite the jumping in his stomach. 

"Was there something you wanted, Potter?" she asks him, not unkindly.

Lily's friend, a Ravenclaw from the year above them, looks impatient. "Do try to keep it quick," says the dark-haired girl.

He tries desperately to think of a reason he has to talk to her, aside from the obvious, because bleeding hell, he is so obvious. A flush creeping up his neck, he says, "Er, was there any homework in Potions?" 

Lily turns to face him fully. "Well... yes," she says, giving him a bemused look. "You were there, if I remember correctly." The Ravenclaw laughs, giving James a knowing look.

He blinks, pushing his glasses up the bridge of his nose. "I forgot to copy it down," he tells her, hoping that she did not notice him lazily scrawling out the beginning of his essay at the end of class. When her eyes drift to Sirius, he adds, "Sirius avoids homework as often as possible."

Sirius leans an elbow on James's shoulder with a grin plastered on his face. "Guess I'm just not as diligent a student as James here," he says in a regretful tone.

"It's an essay on the Draught of Peace," Lily says, reaching into her rucksack. "Slughorn asked us to copy down some extra reading material. You can borrow my list, if you like, so long as you give it back to me by tonight." She extends her hand to him, a piece of parchment in her grasp.

James takes the parchment. His fingers brush hers as he does, and for a moment, their gazes meet. His mouth is dry as he mutters a thanks. "It's due next Friday," Lily tells him. 

Now would be the perfect time for him to say it. To mention that the Hogsmeade weekend is also next weekend, and ask her to accompany him. He has been trying to work up the nerve for half of fifth year, but somehow whenever he gathers his courage, she is cross with him. She seems in a perfectly good mood now, but her friend is standing right there, and so is Sirius, and he doesn't know if he can survive another catch in his voice. "Thanks," he says again. "Really. I'll have the notes back to you soon."

"It's no problem," she says, and then looks at her friend as if she has suddenly remembered something. "We were just heading to the Great Hall," It is not an invitation to join them, but he hadn't expected one.

"Right," says James, his hand jumping to his hair. "I'll – I'll see you there, then?" 

Again, she looks at him as if she finds him extraordinarily strange. "I suppose you will," Lily replies, and she and her mate continue down the corridor. 

He stares at her retreating figure, caught between wanting to preserve the image of her swaying hips in his mind or bash his head into the nearest wall. When they are alone in the corridor once more, he turns to Sirius. "Don't say it," James warns. 

His friend holds up his hands. "I'm not saying anything," he replies innocently. 

"Yeah, well, I know what you're thinking, and don't, Padfoot,"

Sirius smiles, and James should know by now to recognize his expression of victory, but perhaps he is still flustered from attempting to speak to Evans, because he doesn't realize what Sirius is about to do. "Fine, I won't tell you about how I think she fancies you,"

James drops the parchment. "Wait, really?"

And Sirius picks it up, looking like the smug bastard he is. "You told me not to say anything," he reminds James, looking down at the parchment. "Lovely handwriting," he comments, before strolling away to a staircase.

"Padfoot – Padfoot, why do you think she fancies me? And I need that parchment you git, I didn't know about the extra reading material!"

Sirius's laughter and James's complaints echo down the moving stairs down to the Entrance Hall, where perhaps, if James were to look, he would see a girl shaking her head with a hint of a smile.
