Demo is underrated and why you should care (Pt. 2)

I know I have made one of these rambles almost 2 years ago (Holy shit, time flies). But after getting back into TF2 hyperfixation that never ever goes away, I finally found the time to re-chomp on the lore and have a newfound appreciation again for these silly lil men. Especially Demoman, he's my husband and I love him.

For the first years I got into the TF2 fandom, I saw Demo being depicted as a Scottish, drunk cyclops and nothing more. I always got the sense he was more than that stereotype, but I didn't really look into him that much until I grew a little older.

His characterization is very subtle in the comics, despite being very extroverted and loud most of the time in the games, there's a tenderness to his actions during the more quiet moments. You won't see him giving grand speeches or make huge complex plans, but he has been there time and time again for his teammates, family, and friends. There's a kind of charisma to him that's hard to explain, because he's friendly in the sense that he can somehow keep up with different types of people within his team. The TF2 mercs are a bunch of nut-cases with very eccentric personalities, but Demo is great at meeting them at their level.

Spy needs someone to help him support Scout on his etiquette classes? There he is, playing piano and watching over Scout during his date with Miss Pauling.

You need a guy to entertain people or defuse a situation? He's great with children and socializing with civilians. The way he takes care of his mom is unmatched. She has very high expectations for him and often complains, but he has never once badmouthed his mother. The sheer love he gives by constantly taking care of her makes me cry lol, he's such a man.

This dude managed to befriend the BLU soldier, despite the two of them being enemies. The timeline on the in-game voicelines between them is a little shoddy, but I like the implication of the two being friends despite the events the WAR! comic.

I also don't see this being gushed about a lot, but Demo was a huge support for Miss Pauling and the mercs during Comics 1-6. He knew jackshit about what they were supposed to do, yet he dropped everything to help. Granted, it's partially because he liked his old job a lot, but he still got his team's back. Tavish isn't the type to judge people either, accepting them for who they are without ever trying to change them nor bearing grudges for not meeting any expectations. I don't even think he has expectations for anybody, he moves on with his life content in what company he has. I mean he took the time to reassure Soldier that he wasn't a civilian, supporting him without much complaints. If that ain't true respect for his peers, I don't know what is

Demo is someone you can rely on getting the job done, a rock to fall back on when you need a friend. He shows his concern through his actions, being the first to jump in when things go south.

Honestly the more I dig into this man, the more I appreciate him through these little things that he does. Demo is also a lot more intelligent than he's given credit for. Dude was able to balance multiple jobs while working as a mercenary, earning millions of dollars per year. During his Meet The Team video, he was able to explain his own process for making bombs because he's the one making them by himself. The fact that he can do his job very well despite having one eye and being plastered 90% of the time, is a testament to how competent he is as a Demolitions Expert.

Also this is a more indulgent simp section for Demo, but the dude is fucking hot. I dare you to tell me that those lips don't look very luscious and kissable, I fucking dare you.

The way he smiles too is so cute and silly, that it ends up making him even more handsome. I have a real soft spot for him. There is no doubt in my mind that he would be the first to approach someone if they're new in the team, making them feel all comfortable and welcomed. Also his fucking voice? Oh my God, I love how energetic and hyped he is. He gets me fucking hyped playing as him.

His backstory is not complex nor is he a complicated person, but his simplicity is the best part about him. Tavish is grounded and authentic in a way that doesn't have you questioning his true intentions. It's refreshing to know that any mind games you might have are thrown out the window, because Demo is not that kind of guy. He's not heartless either, I mean I spent this whole post gushing about his love language. If he took care of his mom (presumably for years), then he also do the same for his S/O and spoil them like the man he is. He ain't gonna be the stepfather, he's gonna be the man that STEPPED UP!

I said it before and I'll say it again; Tavish Finnegan Degroot is top tier husband material. He is a great character and the life of the party, someone who deserves every attention he gets. (Because Valve couldn't give a piss about him in the comics tbh. The screentime is dry with this one.)

We need to talk about Lang Qianqiu more. What do you mean he was a crown prince? What do you mean his whole family and more were massacred in front of him by what he assumed to be his own teacher? What do you mean that until that point, he'd looked up to his teacher so fucking much, he had admired him and wished to be like him, he wanted nothing more than his approval? What do you mean that after his parents death, he was forced into the role of king and had to sort out politics and had no time to grieve? What do you mean that in the little time he had, he sought out his families (presumed) murderer and stuck him to a coffin with forty-nine (49) wooden nails? What do you mean he loves his family? What do you mean he ascended to godhood? What do you mean one of his best friends died? What do you mean people don't understand his character? What do you mean he has a kind heart and a good soul, respects honor and has a bit of pride? What do you mean that he doesn't have anyone to love and his parents death were a lie? What do you mean that he feels so fucking guilty for what he did to the wrong person, that he chases the culprit for 3 fucking books off-screen before showing up again? What do you mean that after his parents murderer turns into a ghost fire, he takes care of his son? What do you mean that he's trying to forgive the same way his teacher did? What do you mean that he's trying his best, he's fucking trying, he's well-respected and kind, but no one truly understands him besides his teacher, who he has a rocky relationship with at best? What do you mean that his teachings were so ingrained that after 400 years, he still calls him his guoshi? What do you mean he has a tiger in the manhua? What do you mean he's handsome? What do you mean he's protective and eager to serve? What do you mean he probably has PTSD and nightmares? What do you fucking mean? What the fuck do you mean?!
