Word Count: 1.2k <3
After Yeosang walks away, Yunho looks up at Mingi, who is smiling at him with that quirky grin of his. “Are you ready to finish this research paper or what?” Mingi says playfully. Yunho smiles back at him, cheeks flushing, as Mingi turns around, leading them to their usual spot.
Upon arrival at the table, Mingi pulls out Yunho’s chair and waits for him to be seated before sitting down. Yunho studies Mingi’s expression. “I didn’t know you were much of a manners guy,” he says, interested. “Well,” Mingi begins, “it’s the least I can do for my elders.” Mingi says, laughing an infectious laugh, that Yunho can’t help but join in on. After a few moments of laughter, Yunho gets serious. “Alright, now let’s actually get this done before we’ve got to go our separate ways.” Mingi looks up at him, still smiling. “Got it, boss.”
3 hours later
“Finally, it’s complete. I think this might just have to go in my resumé as my magnum opus.” Yunho sighed, looking at the stack of 15 papers piled neatly atop one another in front of him. “You’re telling me,” says Mingi, stretching back in his chair. Yunho looks around and notices that Yeosang has now made himself scarce from the library, giving him a golden opportunity. “Hey, Mingi. So, I was wondering… you know, since we just worked super hard on that paper and stuff, would you wanna go get lunch?” Yunho asked with the grace of an elephant. Mingi’s eyes dart to Yunho, who is now blushing and doing anything to not make eye contact with Mingi. “As long as you’re paying, I’m down.” Mingi replies coolly. Yunho looks at Mingi, who is now focused on something off in the distance. “Seriously!?” Yunho asks, surprised by Mingi’s response. “Well, yeah. I mean it’s just lunch. What kind of food are you thinkin? ‘Cuz I’ve had a recent craving for spicy chicken.” Mingi says with a hungry expression. Yunho smiles, “Alright, I think I can work with that.”
Once they get to the restaurant, Mingi looks up at the sign and says, “You didn’t have to take me somewhere fancy, you know; we could’ve just gotten takeout.” “Don’t worry about it,” Yunho says.“It’s my treat for you having to deal with my awkwardness all the time.” Mingi looks at Yunho. “Awkwardness? What awkwardness? Oh, you mean ‘Gotta wooork!’” Yunho, unimpressed by Mingi’s joke, says sarcastically “Ha-ha, very funny. Now let’s get inside, or you’re paying.” Mingi frowns cutely and walks inside and Yunho can’t help but roll his eyes in response. Not in annoyance but almost flirtatiously, realizing he’s still outside, he makes his way behind Mingi.
Inside and seated, Mingi orders the Yangnyeom he’d been craving all day, and Yunho orders a few sides. While they wait for their food, Mingi asks a strange but fair question. “So, not that I’m offended or disliking you or anything, but I’m glad we’re growing close. But why have you taken such a liking to me?” He says, glancing at Yunho, head tilted to the side. Yunho pauses for a moment; he knows the real reason, but he can’t expose himself, not here, not now. “Uhh, well, actually… I was kinda hoping that maybe, I dunno, you’d be interested in being… my friend?” Yunho answers nervously; he can feel his heart pounding in his chest. Has it worked? Would he take the bait? I mean it wasn’t a concept so difficult to grasp? Mingi’s gaze intensifies, his eyes locked on Yunho. As if he were a criminal being interrogated, and Yunho had just told a big lie. “Alright,” Mingi says. Yunho takes a breath out but doesn’t fully relax. “Wait, what does ‘alright’ mean?” He asks. “‘Alright’ means I’ll be your friend,” Mingi smiles. “You only ever hang out with that Yeosang guy anyway; you really do need to expand your social pool, and I’d say I’m a pretty social butterfly.” Mingi remarks with confidence. Yunho laughs. Mingi makes an offended look and asks, “What’s so funny?” Yunho replies, “Well, it’s just that I don’t think that I’ve ever seen you speak with anyone aside from the librarian before. Excluding me and Yeosang, of course,” Mingi, still looking offended, remarks. “Pfffft. Well, you don’t know my life. I talk to plenty of people. I just…I just don’t go boasting about it.” He says, looking away with his nose up to the sky all snooty-like. At long last the food arrives, and the boys dig in, Mingi devouring his dish and stealing a bit from Yunho’s unfinished sides; luckily, he doesn’t mind it too much.
“Well, I guess it’s time for us to head our separate ways for the day.” Yunho sighs, staring at all the empty bowls in front of him. “Yep,” Mingi replies. There is a long pause before Mingi speaks again. “So, same time tomorrow, right?” Yunho smiles so big he almost laughs with joy. “Yeah, for sure, let’s do it!” Yunho says with delight filling his tone. Mingi stands up from the table and says, “Alrighty, see you then!” Although before he makes it but 2 feet from the table, he comes quickly back, “Oh wait, I forgot to give you my number.” Yunho’s face goes red for what feels like the hundredth time today. Mingi pulls out a phone with a black case and delicate chrome accents, turning the screen around to showcase a series of numbers, which Yunho hastily types into his contacts list. “Alright, I’ve saved it. Thanks a ton, I would’ve probably ended up here alone tomorrow if you hadn’t remembered.” Yunho sighed with relief. Looking at Yunho, Mingi said in a serious but inoffensive tone, one Yunho hadn’t heard from him up till now, “I will always show up for those who are loyal to me.” Mingi was close, very close, so close that Yunho noticed that Mingi had small inserts in his ears. Were they earplugs? Mingi, staying close to Yunho, spoke to him softly. “Stand up.” Yunho blushed; he wasn’t certain of what was happening, but he knew that he trusted Mingi, so he did as he said. “Alright,” Mingi began. “Now on the count of three we are going to both spin inwards; got it?” Mingi asked. Yunho was fairly certain he understood the instructions, but he wasn’t certain of the purpose; however, he responded with a quiet “Yes.” “Alright,” Mingi continued. “On the count of three we spin, 1, 2, 3!” In unison, the boys spun, foreheads touching at the end. Finally, Mingi gives Yunho space to breathe and get his flustered situation under control. “What was that?” Yunho asks. “That,” Mingi begins, “Is a symbol of our eternal friendship.”
After their headspin, the boys walk out of the restaurant together. “Well, see you tomorrow, Yunho,” says Mingi. Yunho snickers a bit. Mingi looks at him, a bit confused. “What?” Yunho responds to him with what should have been obvious. “Mingi, we’ve only just had lunch; we have chemistry today. Why do you think I was in such a rush to finish the paper today?” Mingi checks his phone. “It’s already Wednesday!?” Yunho laughs; Mingi looks at him and chimes in. “Well, see you in a few, then.” Yunho looks at Mingi; he sure is going to miss looking at him. Those gorgeously lean eyes, his plump lips, and arrow-like nose. What strikingly beautiful features, all on one face. “Yeah, see you,” Yunho replied longingly. Accordingly, the boys went their separate ways for the following hours.
